Betty Williams Says Protect The Innocents
Peace prize winner: Protect the innocents
By Nicole Sterghos Brochu

September 16, 2001
WEST PALM BEACH When Betty Williams learned of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, her first reaction was, "Nuke 'em!"
And this from a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
"I'm not going to lie to you and tell you I haven't been feeling very violent this week," Williams told about 200 South Florida high school students gathered for an annual student council meeting in West Palm Beach on Saturday.
Williams, who won the 1976 peace prize for efforts to end strife in Northern Ireland, said it was natural, even human, to want to avenge Tuesday's devastating bloodshed. Even so, she said, America must avoid meting out punishment that may harm innocent people.
"We have to remember that when the first bomb is dropped [in retaliation], there will be young people like you underneath it. Innocents," she said, her voice thick with an Irish brogue.
"There has to be a reaction to this. There's no way around it. Let's hope we respond in a way that will not perpetrate on others what we have suffered."

USE YOUR IMAGINATION
Jody Williams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her work in the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines. By Jody Williams
Asked to opine about what I think one or two of the biggest issues facing us in the coming decades might be, I find myself needing to quote Arundhati Roy, in her anti-nuclear polemic The End of Imagination . Roy writes, "There's nothing new or original left to be said about nuclear weapons. There can be nothing more humiliating for a writer of fiction to have to do than restate a case that has, over the years, already been made by other people in other parts of the world, and made passionately, eloquently and knowledgeably." She goes on to say, however, that she is "prepared to grovel. To humiliate myself abjectly, because in the circumstances, silence would be indefensible." Roy is talking about her need to speak out against the open embrace of nuclear weapons by the country of her birth, India.
When asked to comment about "big issues" and "issues related to war and peace" after all, I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize so I should have "big thoughts" about any number of such "big issues" as often as not I find myself reduced to feeling more like what Roy describes. What more can be said about a multitude of issues facing this increasing small and overwhelmed planet, issues as wide-ranging as global warming or the HIV crisis or unbridled globalization? People with much more intimate knowledge of these issues have spoken often and with much wisdom. It feels like there is nothing left to be said.

All politics involves contention between groups. We often distinguish, however, political contention bound within consensually legitimated institutional frameworks from political contention outside those bounds. The latter we generally term "political conflict," the subject of this class.
External Lectures
Students in this course are also required to attend two evening lectures of public intellectuals who work in the area of political conflict. The lectures are sponsored by the Vice Chancellor and Provost. Both will be held in Hendricks Chapel.

We cannot hide from the threat that nuclear weapons pose to humanity and all life. These are not ordinary weapons, but instruments of mass annihilation that could destroy civilization and end all life on Earth.

Betty Williams 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate Sometimes a Nobel Peace Laureate is created in an instant. Such is the case with Betty Williams, a native of Belfast, Ireland, whose intuitive, immediate response to a senseless act of violence created the Northern Ireland Peace Movement. Herself a mother of two, the 34-year-old Williams was overwhelmed by a passionate desire to take a stand against the violence that precipitated nightmares like the one before her. As soon as she could leave the accident site, she acted on her instincts and began canvassing her neighbors. Within two days she had collected 6,000 signatures on a petition that demanded peace and a stop to the violence. Despite fear of reprisals against her by Ireland’s warring factions, she appealed to Ireland’s women–both Catholic and Protestant–to work with her to rid their community of "this riffraff" in a local television broadcast. Following World War I, pro-independence guerilla groups, such as the IRA, wore down British resolve. In 1922, England established by treaty the Irish Free State, a 26-county area in the south of Ireland whose population is predominately Catholic. Exclu ded from this treaty were six counties in Northern Ireland, which contained a Protestant majority. While the treaty was a step in the direction of Irish independence, it gave England continuing control over a large area of the country indefinitely. The IR A and Sinn Fein, another pro-independence organization, repudiated the treaty.

(Okay, I was one of 20 people at the lunch, but still . . . ) Williams, you recall, is a Catholic who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 with Mairead Corrigan, a Protestant, for their work in founding the Peace People Organization, an ecumenical movement dedicated to ending sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. She now teaches at Florida Atlantic University and directs an organization called World Centers of Compassion for Children. By her own admission she is a force to be reckoned with. "This is the force," she says, pointing to the tip of her tongue. "And it’s a mighty one too, I’ll tell ya." Indeed, within minutes of meeting the slight, blonde woman, the phrase used to describe an Irish mother, "she who must be obeyed," comes to mind. "The people spoke clearly, Father," she answers in that rising Irish lilt. "Nearly 98 percent by our calculations say they want peace. So they’ll have to be gettin’ what they want. They’re not puttin’ up with the violence any more, ya know? We have Gerry Adams and when Gerry gets up to talk, Ian Paisley, the Protestant leader, turns his back. Ya know what it’s like when you have2-year-olds fightin’. Only 2-year-olds have more sense. But the people don’t want to go back, Father. The children don’t want to go back. They tell us they deserve better than the old days. And they’re right."

Children need a greater voice in world affairs, according to Nobel laureate Betty Williams, who spoke at Notre Dame on Friday. Co-winner of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize, Williams gave a lecture highlighting her personal experiences working for peace and the protection of children. She received her Nobel Prize for her work in Northern Ireland. Co-founder of the Peace People Organization, Williams became involved in the peace movement after witnessing the death of three children killed by the driver of an IRA getaway car. To this day Williams refers to them as her "wee angels." "To do this work is to work with the intangible," said Williams about her work for peace. "Peace — people pray for it — dance for it, but to work for it is another thing." Williams spoke from a Catholic point of view about conditions in Northern Ireland that contributed to the violence between its Catholic and Protestant residents. Saying that she sees the opportunity for peace in the region, Williams praised John Hume and David Trimble, co-recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, for their work in advancing peace in Northern Ireland. Williams also spoke about her feelings on war and violence and how her work has changed her. "When a child dies in war by force it is an affront to … a mother," she said.

Il Nobel per la pace se l'è presa anche con i giornalisti: "sono venuti in, Iraq ed hanno visto Tarek Aziz e rospedale, ma hanno scritto solo del primo.
