    THE NOBEL FOUNDATION
    Nobel Lecture
    by Betty Williams
Nobel Peace Prize 1976 December 11, 1977 at Oslo City Hall, Oslo, Norway I stand here today with a sense of humility, a sense of history, and a sense of honour. I also stand here in the name of courage to give name to a challenge. I feel humble in officially receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, because so many people have been involved in the campaign that drew such attention to our leadership that an award like this could justifiably be made. Mairead Corrigan and I may take some satisfaction with us all the days of our lives that we did make that initial call, a call which unlocked the massive desire for peace within the hearts of the Northern Irish people, and as we so soon discovered, in the hearts of people around the world not least in Norway, the generosity of whose people to our cause is the main reason for our current ability to expand our campaign. But unlocking the desire for peace would never have been enough. All the energy, all the determination to express an overwhelming demand for an end to the sickening cycle of useless violence would have reverberated briefly and despairingly among the people, as had happened so many times before if we had not organised ourselves to use that energy and that determination positively, once and for all. So in that first week Mairead Corrigan, Ciaran McKeown and I founded the Movement of the Peace People, in order to give real leadership and direction to the desire which we were certain was there, deep within the hearts of the vast majority of the people, and deep even within the hearts of those who felt, perhaps still do, feel obliged, to oppose us in public.

The eight women who did not lecture are indicated below by a yellow empty-set sign: Links will be added here as the speeches are digitized and loaded to Gifts of Speech . TO BE A PEACEMAKER?
Fear is contagious - but so is courage - Betty Williams OBJECTIVES Students will be able to develop their own criteria for what it would mean to be a peacemaker in their own school and community. Students will be able to explain the concept of the Nobel Peace Prize and its connection to the life of Alfred Nobel. Students will discuss the role of a Nobel Peace Laureate in society today. Activity 1: What is a Peacemaker? Have students get into small groups. Give everyone a sheet of paper. Ask students to complete the sentence, "A PEACEMAKER IS. . . ." Have students list all the qualities that go into being a peacemaker. When they have finished, ask them to share their ideas and then hang their lists up on the wall. Ask students which of the qualities listed are absolutely essential for someone to be called a peacemaker. Activity 2: Do We Know a Peacemaker?

Then came the colorful, feather-clad Native Americans who danced across the stage to a pulsating drumbeat. They provided the backdrop Sunday for an "Evening of Unity" that featured two Nobel Peace Prize laureates issuing a call for racial harmony and understanding in South Florida's divided communities. "We have to stand up against injustice and oppression and all kinds of evil that flows from that," retired Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu told about 3,500 people gathered at the Delray Tennis Center to hear him and fellow Nobel laureate Betty Williams. "You're going to have to dream, dream, dream and say we want to reach out to the skies," Tutu added, "for the skies are unlimited." Introducing him was Williams, an Irish Catholic now living in Western Delray Beach who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for her work trying to defuse that region's decades-long troubles. Sunday's show was an effort to raise money for her international child advocacy group.

Together they founded the Community of Peace People, an organization which is still involved in the betterment of life in Northern Ireland. But, as Mrs. Williams herself has said many times, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded for what one has done but for what one will do. She has traveled the globe recording the testimonies of children who have been subjected to horrors beyond belief. It is evident to Mrs. Williams that governmental legislative changes must be implemented in the direction of the protection of children.
