Great Names LMU
Winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics at the LMU
Wien Laue Heisenberg Binnig Physics LMU has strong associations with names of many great physicists, who have worked at Ludwig-Maximilian's University. In 1900 Wilhelm C. Röntgen became head of the experimental physics department and in 1901 received the Nobel prize. His successor was Wilhelm Wien (Nobel prize 1911), whose name lives on in "Wien's law". Professor Walter Gerlach played a decisive role in the discovery of of the quantisation of angular momentum (Stern-Gerlach experiment). There have been equally many important names in theoretical physics. Ludwig Boltzmann, a professor in Munich at the end of the 19th century, laid the foundations of statistical thermodynamics (Boltzmann entropy, Boltzmann's constant, Stefan-Boltzmann law). His successor, Arnold Sommerfeld, was also in the top league of research with his extension of Bohr's model of the atom. The "Sommerfeld school" left an important mark on the physics throughout the first half of the 20th century. Max von Laue (Nobel prize 1914) and Werner Heisenberg (Nobel prize 1932) were two of his most prominent students and carried on his work in Munich. Another Munich physicist gained the Nobel prize in 1986, when Honorarium Professor Gerd Binnig received the prize for his tunnelling microscope. Today he works at the IBM Research Center in Zurich.
