Heinrich Otto Wieland Munich , Berlin and Stuttgart , and then returned to the Baeyer Laboratory in Munich where, in 1901, he received his doctorate under Johannes Thiele. In Munich, where he had chosen to make his home, he received in 1904 the venia legendi and in 1913 a senior lectureship in the University Chemical Laboratory. In 1917 he transferred his activities to the Technical College nearby as a full Professor. From 1917-1918 he was busy at the Kaiser Wilkelm Institute in Berlin-Dahlem working on Defence. In 1921 he accepted a call to Freiburg and in 1925 returned to Munich at request to succeed him in his Chair in the University of Munich. For twenty-seven years the destiny of the Munich laboratory lay in his hands.
Wieland's scientific work, recorded in four hundred publications, covers a wide field in the realm of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry.
For several decades Wieland's attention was claimed by the organic nitrogenous compounds. His brilliant studies of the reaction of nitrogen oxides with orefins and aromatics, the clarification of furoxanes as well as the classical experiments with fulminic acid and its polymerization may be chosen as examples. In the same connection, Wieland succeeded in the first production of stable organic nitrogen radicals, of diphenyl nitrogen and its N-oxide. The proof of short-lived radicals in solution reactions involved him in an extensive series of experiments whose importance for the modern development of organic radical chemistry can hardly be overestimated.

Wieland, Heinrich Otto
Heinrich Wieland, 1928 Historia-Photo (b. June 4, 1877, Pforzheim, Ger.d. Aug. 5, 1957, Munich, W.Ger.), German chemist, winner of the 1927 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his determination of the molecular structure of bile acids. Wieland obtained his doctorate at the University of Munich in 1901 and remained in that city to teach and conduct research. He became professor of chemistry at the University of Munich in 1925 and held that post until his retirement in 1950. Wieland made important contributions to structural organic chemistry with his findings (1911) that different forms of nitrogen in organic compounds can be detected and distinguished from one another. The following year he began his research on bile acids, which are produced by the liver. He found that the three acids he had isolated were steroids of similar structure that were related to cholesterol. His later work led him to believe that oxidation in living tissues is a matter of removing hydrogen atoms (dehydrogenation) and not of adding oxygen. This theory proved of great importance to physiology, biochemistry, and medicine.

Wieland, Heinrich Otto German organic chemist who determining the structures of steroids and related compounds. He also studied other natural compounds, such as alkaloids and pterins, and contributed to the investigation of biological oxidation. Nobel prize 1927.
Wieland was born in Pforzheim in the Black Forest and attended several universities. He spent most of his career at the University and Technische Hochschule of Munich. During World War I he researched into chemical warfare.
In 1912 Wieland showed that bile acids have similar structures to that of cholesterol. Later he worked out what he thought was the basic skeleton of a steroid molecule (for which he was awarded the Nobel prize), but it was found to be incorrect. In 1932 he and his co-workers produced a somewhat modified structure, which is still accepted today.
Wieland did other work with the bile acids, demonstrating their role in converting fats into water-soluble cholic acids (a key process in digestion). He determined the structures of, and synthesized many, toadstool poisons, such as phalloidine from the deadly Amanita fungus. He also began research into the composition and synthesis of pterins, the pigments that give the colour to butterflies' wings.
Wieland proved experimentally that biological oxidation (the process within living tissues by which food substances such as glucose are converted to carbon dioxide and energy) was in fact a catalytic dehydrogenation. This was in direct opposition to the findings of
