68. The Twyborn Affair - Patrick White.
patrick white (19121990), Australian author, won of the nobel Prize for Literaturein 1973. His first novel Happy Valley was published in 1939. March 2003.
http://uk.geocities.com/glreaderuk/page26.html
The Twyborn Affair , Patrick White.
First published in 1979.
In this late work, White squarely confronts the questions of identity (sexual and otherwise) that long preoccupied him. He does so in unusual fashion: in each of the three parts of the novel the main character appears in a different guise. In the first, in pre-WWI France, he is Eudoxia, 'wife' of a Greek. In the last, leading up to the beginning of WWII, he is Eadith Trist, bordello madam in London. Only in the middle section does he appear vaguely as himself, as Eddie Twyborn.
The book was shortlisted for the 1980 Booker prize but White withdrew it ostensibly to give younger writers a chance.

Praca nasza wymaga³a ogromnego nak³adu czasu. Wiele godzin spêdzi³yœmy w bibliotekach, czytelniach, poszukuj¹c tekstów, szperaj¹c, analizuj¹c. Odrêbnym etapem naszej pracy by³o przygotowanie zebranych materia³ów, segregowanie, eliminowanie i uzupe³nianie. Kolejnym naszym problemem by³o zaprojektowanie ksi¹¿ki od strony graficznej. Zale¿a³o nam, aby ca³oœæ by³a atrakcyjna, a zarazem czytelna.

Book Review Published on Tuesdays Features: Magazine Literary Review Life Metro Plus ... Book Review Critical essays THE EDITOR of this attractively titled volume has always been a sympathetic listener to what the Indian writer has to say. The reason for putting between covers a rather haphazard set of seminarial presentations is given in a disarming preface (apparently the Cauvery problem between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka prevented several delegates from attending the seminar organised by the Institute of Commonwealth and American Studies at Bangalore in 1996) that laments the loss of critical interest in Nobel Laureates: "Who now reads Pearl Buck and Sinclair Lewis, for example? Although Tagore is still almost revered in South Asia (where his poems are the national anthems of two countries), elsewhere his work is familiar to very few. Steinbeck and Hemingway are at present rather overlooked than overstudied; Nadine Gordimer, Wole Soyinka, and Toni Morrison are the current cynosure, while Derek Walcott may be more honoured than read.'' Bitter truth indeed. The reader of such "serious fiction'' is increasingly a rarity thanks to the television on the one hand and erotica paperbacks spread around even by established publishing houses on the other. "We have to survive!'' Pushed more and more into the stultified diction of academia, the significant writers become even more unattractive.

    An Interview with Patrick Hemingway
    by Paul Heidelberg
Patrick Hemingway is the second son of Nobel-prize winning author Ernest Hemingway and the first child of Hemingway and his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Patrick Hemingway worked as a White Hunter in Africa and later worked for such organizations as the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization. Paul Heidelberg interviewed Patrick Hemingway at the presentation of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award at the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library April 5, 1998 in Boston. The John F. Kennedy Library Hemingway Collection is the world's largest repository for manuscripts, books, photos and other materials relating to Ernest Hemingway. PAULH: First of all, Mouse, how you doing, Mouse? PH: AHHHHH (very loudly). PAULH: You had the reaction I had hoped for. (Mouse was Ernest's nickname for Patrick). In my opinion your father is the greatest writer this country has ever had. PH: Oh, thank you. PAULH: Did you realize when you were growing up how important he was? PH: Of course not. We just thought he was a good provider, right. I had very little insight into his ability I thought he was a wonderful guy.
