Alfred Werner , son of factory foreman J.A. Werner and his wife Jeanne,
From 1885 until 1886 he did his military service in Karlsruhe and, during this, attended the lectures of Engler at the Technical High School in that city. In 1886 he attended lectures at the Federal Technical High School at Zurich and in 1889 obtained there the Diploma in Technical Chemistry. During his studies there he was much influenced by Professor A. Hantzsch.
In 1889 he was appointed Assistant in Professor Lunge's laboratory at the Zurich Technical High School and he then began to cooperate with Professor Hantzsch in research. In 1890 he took his degree in the University of Zurich with a thesis on the spatial arrangements of the atoms in molecules containing nitrogen.
In 1895 he became, when he was only 29 years old, Professor of Chemistry in the University, giving the lectures on organic chemistry until, in 1902, he took over the lectures on inorganic chemistry as well. In 1895 he was acquired Swiss nationality and though he was offered posts at Vienna, Basle and Wurzburg, he declined these, preferring to remain in Zurich.
In 1893 he stated, in a paper on mineral compounds, his theory of variable valence, according to which inorganic molecular compounds contain single atoms which act as central nuclei around which are arranged a definite number of other atoms, radicals or other molecules in a simple, spatial, geometric pattern. The figure which expresses the number of atoms thus grouped round a central nucleus was called by Werner the coordination number, the most important of these coordination numbers being 3, 4, 6 and 8, the number 6 occurring especially often. Thousands of molecular compounds correspond to the number 6 type, and in all of these there is a central atom with coordinated atoms at the corners of an octahedron.

Alfred Werner, 1913 H. Roger-Viollet Nobel Prize for Chemistry In 1891 Werner presented his great contribution, coordination theory, which permitted a simple classification of inorganic compounds and extended the concept of isomerism. He and his students prepared many new series of compounds and fitted them into the new system. Though his views have been modified slightly, they are fundamental to modern inorganic chemistry and prepared the way for modern concepts of chemical bonding.

WERNER, ALFRED (1866 - 1919). Neuere Anschauungen auf dem Gebiete der Anorganischen Chemie . Braunschweig, 1905. Although the basic rules that govern the structures of organic compounds had been worked out by the mid-1870's, the structures of inorganic compounds remained confusing and mysterious. Among the most puzzling were the inorganic compounds formed by the reactions of the salts of transition elements. Several theories had been advanced but none was able to account for all the facts. In 1893, a 26 year old Swiss chemist, Alfred Werner, in a flash of inspiration, solved the puzzle. His coordination theory proposed that metal atoms tended to bind other groups in only a few ways, for example, to six groups in an octahedral arrangement or to four groups in a square-planar arrangement. The rest of his life was devoted to proving his theory, and his accomplishments were summarized in his 1905 book Newer Ideas in Inorganic Chemistry . Werner has rightly been called the father of modern inorganic chemistry, and his achievements were recognized by a Nobel Prize in 1913.

Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, and willed his fortune to set up a foundation to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 and the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. The recipients are commonly referred to as the Nobel Laureates. On the occasion of its 300th anniversary in 1968, the Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) made a large donation to the Nobel Foundation to establish a prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. The first Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded in 1969. The Nobel Foundation CHEMISTRY
