Lec Walesa

More Historical Personalities
Lech Walesa (pronounced Vah-wen-sah) was born as the son of a carpenter in a clay hut located in the village of Popow, between Warsaw and Gdansk, Poland, on September 29, 1943. The Second World War was in operation with Nazi Germany being an occupying power. Lech Walesa's father, Boleslaw, was conscripted to dig ditches and died in 1946 from the exposure and beatings he suffered. His mother, Feliksa, seemed to have the most effect on Walesa. The parish priest remembers her as "the wisest woman in the parish."
Walesa was only an average student at his parish school and after graduating from the state vocational school in Lipno, where he learned the electrician's trade, worked as a car mechanic at a machine center from 1961 to 1965. He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk as an electrician.
Poland has had a rather turbulent and unfortunate history in its position amongst powerful neighbours. Once an extensive country, but one which was apt to suffer serious domestic turbulences, by 1800 Poland had been partitioned out of existence with its former provinces being allocated to the Russian and Austrian empires and to Prussia. At several stages in Poland's history the Roman Catholic Church there has served as a focus through which efforts were made to preserve a Polish, and Catholic, nationality. Although Poland had been reconstituted as an independent state between 1921 and 1939 the aftermath of the Second World War saw a Poland with revised frontiers and under the ideological control of Soviet Russia.

The Mayor presented Walesa with a proclamation and a crystal box as part of the reception in his honor. The private reception was held to celebrate the awarding of an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by UNC-Charlotte to Walesa. December 13, 1981 marks the day in history when the Solidarity Labor Movement was "suspended" under Martial Law in Poland and Walesa was interned in a country house for 11 months. In planning for his meeting with Walesa, Mayor McCrory stated, "knowing that freedom and democracy are under siege in many corners of the world, it is an honor to stand with a man who just 21 years ago lead a struggle to gain freedom from communist rule. Mr. Walesa is truly an inspiration for the defenders of democracy and freedom." This event makes Walesa's third visit to Charlotte as the invited guest of NuTech Solutions, Inc. a Charlotte-based company of which Walesa is a member of the Board of Directors.

Lech Walesa
"How many Poles does it take to change the world?"
"Just one." This Polish joke was inspired by the legacy of Lech Walesa. He led the working class in Poland to freedom from Communist rule, an achievement that did change the world. Walesa was born into a peasant lifestyle in Popowo, Poland, on Sept. 29, 1943. His father was a carpenter and so he received only minimal education. In 1967 he went to work as an electrician at the Lenn Shipyard in Gdansk. A devout Roman Catholic, he was shocked to find the conditions and treatment of the workers. He led frequent worker strikes against rising food costs and poor conditions, even after being fired from his job. In 1980 Walesa formed the first workers union, which later became known as the Solidarity committee. It quickly gained over 10 million members, with Walesa elected as leader. But by December of 1981, the government imposed martial law and arrested all the leaders of the Solidarity movement. Walesa was thrown in prison for 11 months. With strong support from the Pope and the United States, Walesa continued his efforts to free Poland from Communism. His efforts were recognized in 1983 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Walesa donated the $194,000 that came with the prize to a program that channels western aid to private farmers.

Born September 29, 1943, in Popowo, Poland, Lech Walesa was the son of a carpenter. He attended primary and vocational school before taking up the position of electrical engineer in the Lenin Shipyards in Gdansk, Poland, in 1967. In 1970, when the shipyards were the center of huge and violent demonstrations against the government's decision to increase food prices, Walesa was among the demonstrators. Six years later, Walesa was fired from his job when he not only protested the Gierek government's raise in food prices, but emerged as an anti-government union activist. He turned to the Workers Defense Committee (KOR), an underground intellectual group established to help the families of workers fired because of the protests, and became increasingly involved in their activities as a dissident. Walesa was arrested several times between 1976 and 1980 for his dissident activities. In 1981 however, Defense Minister Wojciech Jaruzelski was appointed prime minister in a year of increasing social unrest and dissatisfaction in Poland. In December, martial law was imposed and Solidarity was outlawed. Walesa was arrested, and for the next seven years he was either under arrest, watched closely by secret police or harassed. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, Walesa had his wife accept the award for him in Oslo, fearing that authorities would not allow him back into Poland if he left. By December 1988 it was clear that the unrest, social dissatisfaction and economic conditions could not continue without change. At the conclusion of the 10th plenary session of the Communist Party, the party invited the still-illegal and large opposition Solidarity movement to join in talks beginning in February 1989. These talks, which became known as the "roundtable talks," lasted for 59 days, with 13 working groups in 94 sessions.
