Nobel Prizes in Neuroscience
Part I
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can be awarded. This article summarizes of the Nobel Prize-wining work by people who changed our view of the nervous system through their research and discoveries.

"in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system"
Camillo Golgi (Italy) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (Spain) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Cajal and Golgi shared the Nobel Prize for their tremendous contribution to our understanding o the anatomical structure of the brain. Interestingly, they both had different theories about the nature of contacts between nerve cell. Despite this, each scientists produced a large body of work and refined techniques histological techniques impacted future generations of neuroanatomists. Some of this work is described in a previous feature article

"for his work on the dioptrics of the eye"
Allvar Gullstrand (Sweden) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
This price was award for the furtherance of our understanding of the optic principles of the eye and its function in vision.

"for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus"

American virologist who, at the age of 37, shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1975 with Howard M. Temin and Renato Dulbecco. Although the three scientists had made discoveries about ways in which tumour viruses and the genetic material in cells interact, Drs. Baltimore and Temin, working separately and using different approaches discovered retrovirusesviruses with an RNA genome. Diseases such as AIDS and feline leukemia are caused by retroviruses. That led to the isolation of the AIDS virus and to the development not only of many modern biological techniques but also the concept of oncogenea gene that when mutated can produce uncontrolled cell proliferation. developed
a wave equation for the hydrogen molecule with which it was possible to calculate approximate values of the molecule's ionization potential, heat of dissociation, and other constants. These predicted values were reasonably consistent with empirical values obtained by spectroscopic and chemical means. This theory of the chemical binding of homopolar molecules is considered one of the most important advances in modern chemistry. The approach is later called the valence-bond theory.

History of Medicine
The Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine
1922- Sir Archibald Vivian Hill. Great Britain,London University (1886-1977). Otto Meyerhoff. University of Heidelberg, Germany (1884-1951)

"for their discoveries relating to the production of heat in the muscle"
Sir Archibald Hill and Otto Meyerhoff, discovered the production of heat in muscles, which helped establish the origin of muscular power in the breakdown of carbohydrates and the production of lactic acid in an anaerobic environment.
Working with frog muscles, they showed that oxygen is required by these tissues during the recovery but not the contractile phase of muscular activity and led the foundation of biochemical reactions in the muscles. 1923- Sir Frederick Grant Banting. Toronto University, Canada (1891 - 1941) John James Richard Macleod. Toronto University, Toronto, Canada (1876 - 1935).
"for the discovery of insulin"
Sir Frederick Grant Banting working with Charles Best obtained for the first time a pancreatic extract of insulin. Afterwards, working in the laboratory of the Scottish physiologist Richard McLeod, they were able to isolate the hormone in a form consistently effective in treating diabetes.
