Three years before my birth, my parents settled in Freeport, my mother's home town, where my father established a general medical practice, while my mother commuted to a social services job in New York City. With the entry of the United States into the War, however, my father was assigned to an Air Force Hospital near Winter Park, Florida, and my first memories were to be of long beaches, and bass fishing on a lake with alligators. We remained in Florida, spared the pain of war, until early in 1946. In the interim, my only sibling, Ellen Jane, was born; she is now a genetic counselor and mother of three in Berkeley, California.
My growing-up in Freeport was undemanding and in many ways privileged. The public schools I attended were dominated by athletics and rarely inspiring intellectually, but I enjoyed a small circle of interesting friends, despite my ineptitude at team sports and my preference for reading. Life was enriched by frequent outings to Jones Beach State Park (where my father was the medical officer for many years), family skiing vacations to New England, and many outdoor adventures with the Boy Scouts and later the Putney Summer Work Camp.
The most decisive turn in my intellectual history came in the fall of 1957, when I entered

Home Page Nobel Laureate and Former NIH Head Harold Varmus Elected to University Trustees By James Devitt Harold E. Varmus Harold E. Varmus, a Nobel laureate and former director of the National Institutes of Health, has been elected a Trustee of Columbia University. Varmus shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with J. Michael Bishop for their work at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) on the genetic basis of cancer. Varmus, who spent 23 years as a faculty member at UCSF, Bishop and their co-workers demonstrated the cellular origins of the oncogene of a chicken retrovirus. This discovery led to the isolation of many cellular genes that normally control growth and development and are frequently mutated in human cancer. Varmus is also widely recognized for his studies of the replication cycles of retroviruses and hepatitis B viruses, the functions of genes implicated in cancer and the development of mouse models for human cancer. In 1993, Varmus was named by President Bill Clinton to serve as the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a position he held until the end of 1999. At the NIH, Varmus initiated many changes in the conduct of intramural and extramural research programs, recruited new leaders for most of the important positions at the NIH, planned three major buildings on the NIH campus and helped to increase the NIH budget from under $11 to nearly $18 billion.

NEW YORK, October 7, 1999 - Dr. Harold E. Varmus, Director of the National Institutes of Health and co-recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, will be the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Douglas A. Warner III, Chairman of the Boards of Overseers and Managers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering, made the announcement. Effective January 2000, Dr. Varmus will succeed Dr. Paul A. Marks. Dr. Marks has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since 1980 and announced his plans to step down late last year. "Harold Varmus combines an extraordinary understanding of the biology of cancer and sensitivity to the clinical needs of cancer patients with the vision to take our great institution into the next century," said Mr. Warner. "Dr. Varmus has a strong appreciation for Memorial Sloan-Kettering's three-pronged focus on research, education, and patient care and is a gifted leader," Mr. Warner continued. "We are very pleased that he will continue his 30-year commitment to the control and cure of cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering."

Harold Varmus, Lewis Branscomb are Honored with the Vannevar Bush Award
The National Science Board (NSB) has named two renowned scientists to receive the Vannevar Bush Award for lifetime achievement in science and public service. Harold E. Varmus, former director of the National Institutes of Health and a Nobel-prize holder for contributions to understanding the mechanisms of cancer, and Lewis M. Branscomb, a physicist, former NSB chair and one of the most compelling voices in science and technology policy will receive the award May 23 at a Department of State-hosted awards dinner. Varmus is currently president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the nation's oldest and largest private institution for cancer research. No stranger to heading large organizations, Varmus joined Sloan-Kettering after directing for seven years the government's largest health-related research organization, the National Institutes of Health, through a major growth period during the 1990s.

Derek Hodel President Clinton moved in August, after months of delay, to nominate Harold E. Varmus, MD, to head the sprawling National Institutes of Health NIH ), the nation's premier biomedical research organization. Varmus, a Nobel laureate cancer researcher from the University of California at San Francisco, will replace Bernadine Healy, MD, whose controversial tenure was marked by infighting at the agency, and just plain fighting on Capitol Hill. AIDS activists, though mostly pleased to see Healy go (with the exception of Project Inform's Martin Delaney, who urged the Clinton administration to retain Healy, a Bush appointee), reacted with a mixture of caution and outright suspicion to news of Varmus' nomination. Many were familiar with the Nobel laureate only by reputation at UCSF ("brilliant," "impossibly arrogant," "doesn't suffer fools,") or through a letter Varmus wrote, urging his colleagues to oppose the Office of AIDS Research reforms, an activist initiative recently signed into law as Title XVIII of the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act of 1993 (S.1). AIDS activists were of mixed views as to how to respond to Varmus' nomination. Many, including the AIDS Action Council, the Treatment Action Group
