Eight Nobel Prize recipients with MIT connections won Nobel Prizes in five fields this weekmedicine, physics, chemistry, economics and peace. The Peace Prize award Friday to the United Nations and Kofi Annan (MIT S.M. 1972) capped a week in which a current professor, a former professor and six alumni shared the prestigious prizes. MIT President Charles M. Vest commented, "It is thrilling and absolutely extraordinary that eight people who have taught or studied at MIT are among the 13 Nobel Prize winners in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and peace. This is testimony to the excellence of students and faculty who are attracted to MIT, and to our dedication to intense work in fields of fundamental importance. Among the winners I know personally, the quality and creativity of students at MIT is frequently cited as a great strength of MIT. "Looking at the history of the Nobel Prizes in recent years, it is noteworthy that in many fields, the basic research done early in an individual’s career, shortly after attaining a Ph.D., is the work that is rewarded years later with the Nobel Prize," Vest said.

MIT Alumnus Annan Wins Peace Prize
By Kevin R. Lang NEWS EDITOR Eight of the fourteen individuals awarded Nobels this year were either alumni, former faculty, or current faculty. Annan was a fellow of the Sloan School of Management from 1971-1972, and delivered the 1997 commencement address. The United Nations has played a crucial role in building an international campaign against terrorism, and the organization is expected to lead the effort to build a post-Taliban government in Afghanistan. Annan, 63, was named the seventh secretary general by the United Nations in 1997, and was reelected in June. He has served the United Nations for his entire career, except for a two-year assignment with the Ghana Tourist Development Company in the 1970s. • Carter warns of "uncontrollable violence" In his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, former President Jimmy Carter blasts the idea of a preemptive war with Iraq. By Jimmy Carter Your Majesties, Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I accept this prize. I am grateful to my wife Rosalynn, to my colleagues at The Carter Center, and to many others who continue to seek an end to violence and suffering throughout the world. The scope and character of our Center's activities are perhaps unique, but in many other ways they are typical of the work being done by many hundreds of nongovernmental organizations that strive for human rights and peace. Most Nobel laureates have carried out our work in safety, but there are others who have acted with great personal courage. None has provided more vivid reminders of the dangers of peacemaking than two of my friends, Anwar Sadat and Yitzhak Rabin, who gave their lives for the cause of peace in the Middle East.

THE PROMISE OF THE UNITED NATIONS By Irwin Abrams Yellow Springs News , November 1, 2001 The United Nations represents not only the global legitimacy for the current military campaign of the United States and its closest coalition allies, but it provides the basis for a long lasting humanitarian coalition of the world community. I have been proud of my country, whose idealism and compassion have been so well displayed by the self-sacrificing fire fighters, police units, and so many who gave their lives for others in our national tragedy. It is my hope that the United States might show as much its capacity for compassion as for force and that it would work with the United Nations, led by Kofi Annan, to create a world of peace and justice. What a memorial to our victims of terrorism that would be.

    HUMAN LIFE IS SACRED
October 2001 An Appeal to Restraint and a Call to Action
in a Moment of Crisis by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates We are greatly saddened by the tragic events which took place on Tuesday, September 11th, in New York and Washington, D.C. We cannot yet fathom the magnitude of what has happened, and yet we feel impelled to speak in light of what we fear may be an escalation of violence in response. We extend our deepest sympathies and heart-felt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the people of the United States. Our prayers accompany you in this difficult period of loss and mourning. The many acts of courage on the part of the rescue teams and the generosity of the citizens of your cities and towns are an inspiration to all of us. Respect for the sacredness and inviolability of human life is a principal article of faith in each of the major world religions. We are heartened by the spontaneous expressions of solidarity by millions of men and women of good will, from all backgrounds, on every continent, and by so many religious and political leaders through the world who have spoken out against this barbarous act of terrorism. There is nothing which can condone an act which has cost the lives of thousands of innocent people. The perpetrators of this deed must be sought out and brought to justice. At the same time, we know that administering justice to those responsible will not resolve the deeper questions of the causes of terrorism. In this regard, we are mindful that every day innocent victims suffer and die in many parts of the world, their only crime being born in a particular place, or into a particular religion, or with a certain skin colour.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2001
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations (U.N.) and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.
For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilization aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges.
Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the U.N. As Secretary-General, he has been pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization. While clearly underlining the U.N.'s traditional responsibility for peace and security, he has also emphasized its obligations with regard to human rights. He has risen to such new challenges as HIV/AIDS and international terrorism, and brought about more efficient utilization of the U.N.'s modest resources. In an organization that can hardly become more than its members permit, he has made clear that sovereignty can not be a shield behind which member states conceal their violations.
The U.N. has in its history achieved many successes, and suffered many setbacks. Through this first Peace Prize to the U.N. as such, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes in its centenary year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations.

    • in 1988 it was awarded to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) received the prize in 1954 and 1981; it was awarded to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 1965; and the International Labour Organization (ILO) received it in 1969.
Kofi Annan is the second Secretary-General to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The Organization’s second Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld, was awarded the prize posthumously in 1961, for his action in strengthening the United Nations. Hammarskjöld’s award came just a few months after his death in a plane crash near Ndola (now in Zambia), while on a peace mission in the Congo.

Message of United Nations Secretary-General to Third Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates
Delivered by Ms. Shalani Dewan, Director, United Nations Information Centre, Rome
    Rome, 19 October 2002
Distinguished leaders and champions of peace,
I am pleased and honoured to convey my warm greeting to all who have gathered in Rome for this important Summit. I know you all join me in congratulating President Carter on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002. He has indeed earned it by his tireless efforts to promote peace, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Your meeting is taking place at a critical moment for world peace, and for the United Nations. The situation created by Iraq's failure to comply fully with the resolutions of the Security Council since 1991 is indeed one of the gravest and most serious facing the international community today. If handled properly, this challenge may ultimately strengthen international cooperation, the rule of law, and the United Nations enabling it to move forward in a purposeful way, not only in this immediate crisis but in the future as well.
I have appealed to all who might have influence with Iraq's leaders to impress on them the vital important of accepting the weapons inspections. And I myself urged Iraq to comply with its obligations for the sake of its own people, and for the sake of world order. Iraq's decision to readmit the inspectors without conditions is an important first step, but only a first step. Full compliance remains indispensable, and it has not yet happened.

West Timor, administered as part of the Dutch East Indies, became part of Indonesia in 1946, while East Timor, with a different language, religion, and customs from its island neighbor, remained part of the Portuguese colonial empire. Unlike Indonesia, which is the most populous Muslim nation in the world with more than 190 mi llion people, East Timor is populated primarily by Roman Catholics. Two days after a December 5, 1975, state visit in Jakarta with President Suharto in which President Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger pledged U.S. support and military aid, Indonesia invaded East Timor. The Indonesian government formally anne xed East Timor in July 1976 as the 27 th Indonesian province. In his award presentation speech, Francis Sejersted, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, noted that since the invasion, Ramos-Horta has lived abroad, "unceasingly and with great personal sacrifice collecting and communicating information on the repression, torture, and killing in his home country, and acting as East Timor’s principal international spokesman. At the same time, he has successfully kept up his efforts to unite the various East Timorese groups in a single national front, w hile constantly seeking opportunities for a peaceful solution to the conflict with Indonesia, based on respect for the integrity of the East Timorese people."
