V-Day www.vday.org . is a global movement to end violence against girls and women. V-Day is a decision, an energy, a spirit, a day Valentine's Day for which annual theatrical and artistic events are produced in local, national and international venues to raise money and to transform consciousness. To date, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning play, "The Vagina Monologues," has been the centerpiece of these events. In order to translate its mission into action, V-Day established the V-Day Fund in 1998. The V-Day Fund allocates resources to global grassroots groups that work to end rape, battery, incest and genital mutilation. Contributions to the V-Day Fund come from many different places: individuals, corporations, foundations, product and book sales, benefit and commercial performances of "The Vagina Monologues." V-Day is a project of the Tides Foundation and is a 501(c)3 organization. info@vertic.org

17 September 1998 Press Briefing PRESS CONFERENCE MARKING FORTIETH RATIFICATION OF LANDMINES
CONVENTION TRIGGERING MARCH 1991 ENTRY INTO FORCE
The world had taken a major step towards becoming a safer and
more humane place, the Assistant Secretary-General for
Peacekeeping Operations, Choi Young-Jin, told correspondents at a
Headquarters press conference this morning. The press conference was being held to mark the fortieth
ratification yesterday of the Ottawa landmines Convention
formally known as the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the
Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines and on Their Destruction which would trigger the Convention's entry into force on 1 March 1999. Robert Fowler (Canada) said it was significant that the fortieth ratification had come from an African nation, Burkina Faso, as

New leadership for AGI's GeoRef
Sharon Tahirkheli was named acting director of AGI's GeoRef database on Feb. 28, succeeding retired director John Mulvihill. Tahirkheli takes charge of a database that contains 2.1 million bibliographic references to journals, books, maps, and other geoscience publications in 40 different languages. She joined GeoRef as an indexer in 1975, became a senior editor three years later, and was promoted to chief editor in 1987. As acting director, she will oversee a 30-person staff. Filling her previous position are former editor-indexers Ellen Hissong and Jim Mehl, who now become associate editors. Tahirkheli earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish in 1975 from Mary Washington College in Virginia. In 1989, she earned a master's degree in library and information science from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. This year, the American Geological Institute (AGI) is receiving a substantial bequest from the estate of LORRAINE AND FREDERICK HINRICHS . Frederick Hinrichs was an admiral in the U.S. Navy who earned his master's degree in geology from Northwestern University in 1941 and carried a love for geology throughout his life. Hinrichs, 81, died of cancer on Nov. 26, 1996 and his wife, Lorraine, 84, died the next day, apparently of a heart attack. The couple lived in Beverly Hills, Calif., and left a large fortune to family members, friends, and several nonprofit organizations, including AGI, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Foundation, Northwestern University, and the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. Frederick Hinrichs served as chief geologist of Fairchild Aerial Surveys Inc,. from 1948 to 1965 and as west exploration manager for Aero Services Corp. in Los Angeles from 1965 until his death. He was also a member of several geology associations.

Note by Dr. Buche:
Items in BOLD characters pertain to health issues in general and vaccines in particular. Now, imagine, these are dates of 40 to 50 years ago. What happened SINCE then makes the issues even worse than what these items indicate. 1948 Randolph K. Byers and Frederick C. Moll of the Harvard Medical School publish an article describing children who had suffered brain damage after receiving Pertussis vaccine. The findings provided the first clear evidence that the vaccine caused the serious neurological complications in children. 1948 US Marshall Plan $17 billion "European Aid". 1948 Study done in England where bone defects in three groups of school boys were studied. Two groups were from districts where the water supply was practically free of fluorine. The third group was from the town of Launton, where the natural water supply contains 1ppm of fluorine (the same as the level deemed "safe" by the U.S. Public Health Service). X-ray examination revealed that 20 percent of the first two groups had mild non-specific spinal irregularities. In the third group, the one consuming 1ppm fluoride in their water, 64% were found to have spinal defects, and lesions were more severe. 1948 Israel comes into existence, displacing indigenous population.

Sustainable Development is now part of the National Curriculum and kids are encouraged through a number of subjects to learn about environmental issues and the practical things they can do to help make a difference. And it is not only the pupils who can do their bit, teachers, parents. governors and the school itself can all take environmental actions. Schools are organisations like any other. They use electricity, water, produce waste, and people have to travel to get to them, all of which have an impact on the environment. There are many opportunities to do things that make a definite difference both to help the environment, reduce costs and build a sense of community. Information for teachers on what Education for Sustainable Development is and what schools should do about it is available at http://www.cee.org.uk/teachers/esd.html
