SECRETARY-GENERAL SAYS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARD PROCLAIMS UNITED NATIONS IS ONLY ROUTE TO GLOBAL PEACE AND COOPERATION
Security Council Members Told Their Role Is Acknowledged

This is the text of a statement in the Security Council today of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in response to remarks by the Council President, Richard Ryan (Ireland), on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Secretary-General and to the United Nations:
Thank you, Mr. President, for that very generous statement.
You have congratulated me, but I should also congratulate you and all the members of this Council, present and past alike.  In awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has of course honoured the Security Council, which has, under the Charter, the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
Those women and men work hard every day to make this world a more just, more peaceful, and happier place for all its inhabitants.  Many of them risk their lives.  They deserve this award richly.
In a world which is growing ever closer and more interconnected, and is yet still torn by brutal conflicts and cruel injustice, it is more important than ever that humanity travel that route, the route described by the Nobel Committee, and that all of us work hard to pave the road ahead of it.

Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 to the United Nations and Kofi Annan
A symbol of peace
"This man stands for peace just in his very being. The integrity and the moral authority is exactly the sort of leadership the world wants in a difficult era."
By Christian Borch
It was with these words that the British ambassador to the United Nations expressed his reaction to the news that Kofi Annan had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001. together with the organisation he leads. With few exceptions, the rest of the world reacted in the same way.
Immediate trust
Kofi Annan is a quiet diplomat and a man of firm principle. He approaches the conflicting parties with respect and without criticism or condemnation and conducts negotiations behind closed doors. Co-workers say he wins almost immediate trust , not least because he treats all the parties involved as equals and has no preconveived notions.
He rarely takes the offensive in dealing with specific conflicts, but when he does, his reaction has a decisive influence. This was the case, for example, when he insisted that no government can cite the principle of national sovereignty in order to justify serious violations of human rights.
Cross-cultural
Kofi Annan's manner and style of leadership are often described as a result of cross-cultural influences. He is the son of a Ghanian chieftain, was educated in Africa, Europe and the USA and has spent virtually all his working life serving the United Nations in various parts of the world.

It is the right decision at the right time to honour and praise Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United Nations as the stronghold of our shared values and commitment for peace, security, freedom and prosperity for all. Monday October 15, 2001 Printer friendly version Email to a friend NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARDED TO UNITED NATIONS AND KOFI ANNAN UNITED NATIONS, October 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to the United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday. Following the award, the organization and its leader were heaped with accolades by world leaders, but given sharp criticism by pro-life leaders.
Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition Canada reacted to the announcement of the awards saying, "I'm appalled." Hughes recalled the atrocious record of the United Nations in promoting abortion through its various agencies UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNDP, and the personal efforts of Kofi Annan to promote population control. UNFPA, in conjunction with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, has been the foremost promoter of abortion, abortifacient contraception and sterilization, worldwide, particularly targeting third world nations. While the United Nations record on promoting abortion and population control is well documented, Annan's personal dealings with the subject are hard to find.
As recently as July, Annan made a thinly veiled call for abortion rights while promoting "an integrated approach to... slowing population growth" which included a call for "universal access to ...reproductive health care and family planning... (allowing women to) ...control their own fertility." As head of the UN, Annan has appointed a cadre of radical feminists to head up various departments at the world organization including Angela King and Mary Robinson.

Sergei Borisov: U.N. rewarded with Nobel Prize to remember the organization still exists
Kofi Annan and the United Nations have been rewarded with Nobel Peace Prize. Many people are puzzled, though the position of Nobel Committee should be understood. Who deserved the Nobel Prize this year? Nobody settled any conflicts, and the world did not become more peaceful. On the contrary, terrorist acts were committed in New York, a new war is flaring up in Afghanistan, and many analysts are afraid that the world is on the verge of world war III.
Today’s events are accompanied by an unprecedented success of the United Nations. The US has already stopped taking its position into consideration and solves all questions independently. For the time being, the US do not consider the U.N. to be a remnant of the Cold War, though the US always shows tjat the U.N. cannot influence its decisions. The U.N.’s location on US territory irritates some Americans; two small towns even declared their withdrawal from U.N. While the US and NATO were bombing Yugoslavia, the U.N. was not able and did not want to do something to protect the peaceful population. Even today, it cannot do anything to protect civilians in Afghanistan. The U.N. turned into a bureaucratic machine of aninternational scale. It cannot help even itself: payments of different countries are being delayed, and there are even times when U.N. has not money to pay salary its workers.

The United Nations As Peacekeepers
Planting Seeds For World Peace From Cyprus or the Congo in the 1960s to Yugoslavia or Somalia or Rwanda in the 1990s, Canadians have shared widely in the peacekeeping work of the United Nations. In fact, UN peacekeeping forces are very much the product of a Canadian initiative taken by Lester B. Pearson, then Canada’s Minister for External Affairs, during the Suez Canal crisis of 1956. Pearson had been president, in 1952, of the United Nations General Assembly and later became Canada’s Prime Minister (1963-1968). This historic view portrays Lester B. Pearson, Canada's Minister of External Affairs (and future Prime Minister, 1963-68), receiving the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize, in Norway, from Gunnar Jahn, Chairman, Nobel Committee (1942-66) [NAC/PA 114544] In October 1956, Israeli troops backed by Britain and France attacked the key Suez Canal area, which Egypt had earlier seized. Faced with a situation that threatened to disrupt the alliance of Western powers — or even lead to world war — Pearson proposed a United Nations Emergency Force to stabilize the danger zone and offered Canadian troops to serve in such a collective force. Working through its secretary-general, Dag Hammarskjold, he succeeded in getting the UN to adopt his bold proposal. The UNEF thus quickly came into being under the command of Canadian General Eedson L.M. Burns; a Canadian contingent was a permanent inclusion. Despite difficulties, this UN Force succeeded in restoring order. Pearson, for his efforts, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. Above all, a major instrument had been added to the UN’s global operations, one for which Canada, today, deserves a large portion of the credit.

OSLO, Norway Saying the world "entered the third millennium through a gate of fire" ignited on Sept. 11, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan accepted the centennial Nobel Peace Prize on Monday with a call for humanity to fight poverty, ignorance and disease. Annan said the terrorist attacks in the United States showed that "new threats make no distinction between races, nations or regions." The world now has "a deeper awareness of the bonds that bind us all in pain and in prosperity," he said. "Today, no walls can separate humanitarian or human rights crises in one part of the world from national security crises in another," he said. "What begins with the failure to uphold the dignity of one life, all too often ends with a calamity for entire nations."

Following the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize award to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 16 October addressed a congratulatory letter to the organization and to its head. In the letter, addressed to Kofi Annan and to UN Staff Committee President Rosemarie Waters, the acting general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Georges Lemopoulos, lauds Kofi Annan for his "wise leadership" and skills as a "global mediator, negotiator, peacemaker and guardian of the international rule of law". The letter of congratulations also thanks UN staff at all levels for their dedicated work and for their part "in seeking to embody and give life to the aspirations of the Peoples of the United Nations". The full text of the letter follows: "The World Council of Churches sends its hearty congratulations for the award to you of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001. Mr Secretary-General, this prize justly recognizes the roles of global mediator, negotiator, peacemaker and guardian of the international rule of law that you have performed so brilliantly during your first term in office. Coming as it does when you have been elected to a new term of office, this award is a welcome reflection of the broad international support you have for the wise leadership you have provided as the leader of the United Nations.

Eisaku Sato (1901-75) The former prime minister of Japan who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974, was the first Asian to receive the Peace Prize. Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Aasa Lionaes, declared in her presentation that the committee wished "to emphasize the important role the Japanese people have played in promoting close and friendly cooperation with other nations." She went on to say that Sato had made a major contribution to peace "by countering the tendency towards a nationalistic policy in Japan after the war" and by conducting a peaceful foreign policy. The Committee attached considerable importance to Sato's opposition to nuclear arms for Japan and his bringing Japan into the pact on the nonproliferation of nuclear arms, signed in February 1970.
Brief history of the Foundation
Based on the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in December 1974 to the late Eisaku Sato, a former Prime Minister, the Foundation was established on 11 November 1975, as a public corporation with the joint support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of education, Science and Culture, to fulfil the vision of the late Mr. Sato "to cooperate with the development of the United Nations University and to contribute to the improvement of world peace and welfare".
The late Prime Minister Eisaku Sato's ideal was the improvement of world peace and welfare and he believed that the United Nations had a major role in achieving it. For this reason, he went to extraordinary lengths to establish the United Nations University and attract it to Japan, and it was his fervent wish to strengthen the advancement of the University. Under the inspiration of the late former Prime Minister Eisaku Sato, the objectives of this Foundation are to contribute to the development of the United Nations University and to the attainment of world peace and welfare.

Annan, a consummate diplomat, has revitalised the UN
The United Nations and its Secretary General, Kofi Annan, have been awarded the centenary Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the international organisation and its 63-year-old leader for working for human rights and to defuse global conflicts.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes in its centenary year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and co-operation goes by way of the United Nations
The Nobel Committee In making the award, a spokesman for the Nobel Committee said: "Kofi Annan has dedicated almost all his working life to the United Nations. As secretary general, he has brought new life to the organisation." The committee also praised Mr Annan for helping the UN rise to emerging challenges like the fights against HIV/Aids and international terrorism. The prize, named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish philanthropist and inventor of dynamite, is worth $946,200.
