Preserving our Norwegian heritage... Sigrid Undset Lodge #32 was founded on February 21, 1987, in Palo Alto, California. It is named for the Nobel Prize-winning author, Sigrid Undset (1882-1949) who wrote a particularly famous historical trilogy about Kristin Lavensdatter: The Bridal Wreath, Mistress of Husaby and The Cross , published in English in 1930 by Alfred Knopf Publishers. All the novels Sigrid Undset wrote are still in print today in Norwegian, English, German and many other languages, attesting to the power of her medieval narrative. For more information, Danny Yee wrote an interesting review about Kristin Lavensdatter , the books. [Note that The Bridal Wreath is often translated as The Garland The Norwegian film star and director, Liv Ullmann, made Kristin Lavensdatter into a movie in Norwegian, staring Elisabeth Matheson. The film was not released generally in the US. It did play in New York and Los Angeles for a week in 1999, the minimum to qualify for condsideration for the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Film; but it was not nominated. The principal criticism was the length (several hours). The film has now been edited down to 144 minutes (2:24) with subtitles and released as a video by Home Vision Cinema and is available from many sources on the web. For more information, Elspeth Haughton wrote an interesting review about Kristin Lavensdatter , the movie. [The movie was rated about 20 points higher on the Apollo system by viewers than by critics.]

Sigrid Undset

SIGRID UNDSET (1882 - 1949)
1928 The Nobel Prize for Literature Both these novels about the Middle Ages, in particular "Kristin Lavransdatter", became international bestsellers at the time. According to Alfred Nobel´s will, the Literature Prize is to be awarded to the author who has written "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency", and so Undset´s books fell within this somewhat elastic category. But it was Sigrid Undset´s talent as a great story-teller rather than the idealistic tendency which fascinated her readers all over the world. Her books had been translated into the most important foreign languages even before she received the Nobel Prize. After 1928, they were published in virtually every major language. Now, after a lapse of 70 years, her books are still being read worldwide, by new generations of readers. Outside Norway, her reputation has been mostly confined to "Kristin Lavransdatter". Not so in Norway. I noticed this in connection with my biography of Sigrid Undset, published in 1989. I have received letters from women and men, old and young, from every part of Norway, showing that she is being read, by an increasing number of people - in this age of television. Who was Sigrid Undset? It might be worth mentioning that Sigrid Undset was born the same year as Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, three years before D.H. Lawrence and Karen Blixen. From the literary point of view, none of these were of importance to her personally, except D.H. Lawrence, whose work greatly interested her in the 1930s. But they all belong to the same generation; they are contemporaries, each one in his/her own corner of Europe. Their respective authorships did indeed develop along very different lines, but they do have one thing in common: they are the children of a Europe in crisis, and they are very conscious of it.

    Biography:
Sigrid Undset [ Seehg -ridh Oond -seht] was born in Denmark on May 20th,1882. Her father was the internationally renowned Norwegian archaeologist Ingvald Martin Undset, her mother of a good Danish family. Sigrid grew up in Norway with her two younger sisters, and was exposed to the history of Norway and the sagas from an early age, and was even allowed to play with priceless archaeolgical artifacts. Her father contracted syphilis of the brain and spinal marrow the year Sigrid was born, and he became more and more handicapped and in need of care until he died when Sigrid was eleven years old. She quit school at sixteen and got a position as an office girl. During this time she started writing, something she could only do during the nights, which probably played a part in Undset's failing health from the late 1930s on. Her first novel was refused by the publisher, and she was told not to write historic novels any more, she didn't know how. In 1907 her first book came out, a modern novel titled Mrs. Martha Oulie

Norwegian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. Undset is best known for her novels about life in the Scandinavian countries during the Middle Ages. Her early novels deal with contemporary subjects, the problems of city women, as do her later works, in which she returns to the modern world. Often her heroines face tragic consequences when they are unfaithful to their true inner self or idealistically break traditional sex roles. In his presentation speech, Per Hallström, Chairman of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy, stated "the erotic life, the problem common to the two sexes, which constitutes the centre of Sigrid Undset's psychological interest, is found again, almost without modifications, in her historical novels. In this respect, objections naturally come to mind. In medieval documents, the feminist question is not known; one never finds hints of the inner personal life, which later was to raise this question. The historian, demanding proofs, has the right to note this discrepancy. But the historian's claim is not absolute; the poet has at least an equal right to express himself when he relies on a solid and intuitive knowledge of the human soul."

The Unknown Sigrid Undset: Jenny and Other Works > Customer Review #1: Heartbreaking stories, masterpieces of literary fiction

I have recently bought "The Unknown Sigrid Undset: Jenny and Other Works" published by Steerforth Press. This volume is the most carefully edited omnibus I have ever seen. Its clear that book lovers have done their work here, people who put love for books above everything else, including strictly commercial motivations. "Jenny" was out of print for what - 70 years? Perhaps more. The old translation from the 1920s apparently utilized the archaic English language, and thus Undset herself had decided to take it out of the circulation. You can also find an online interview with the translator, Tiina Nunnally, who translated it anew, and learn how difficult it is to bring old Scandinavian novels back to life, so that they are accessible to the XXI century reader, and yet do not lose anything of its original charm and style. It is a noble deed, really, in this day and age - to reprint the pearls of literature and in such careful way at that.
