Ask Aristotle about David Trimble

Andrew Roth Sunday March 25, 2001 Northern Ireland's opera-loving Unionist first minister, David Trimble, has been likened to Houdini for his last minute escapes from seemingly inevitable political disasters. In fact, he has more in common with a performer on the slack high wire, stunning his audience with an ability to sway back and forth between extreme Protestant sectarianism and the moderate centre, while never falling - so far, at least. He even finds time to grasp the hands of Catholic republican nationalists as he staggers towards his destination. As leader of the Ulster Unionists following the retirement of the Sir James Molyneux, it was Mr Trimble's surprise compromise with republican nationalists that made the 1998 Good Friday agreement possible.

Jackie Ashley meets David Trimble, the Northern Ireland assembly's first minister
Monday July 22, 2002
The Guardian
David Trimble is an old-fashioned politician of a kind you rarely come across in Westminster now. He is courteous, home-loving, conventional - and embattled in a way no mainland MP can begin to understand. They say the peacemakers are blessed, and Trimble has certainly been a kind of peacemaker. But he is under intense pressure now - from angry, hardline unionists inside and outside his party, from republicanism and from London.

Elizabeth Farnsworth talks with the head of the Northern Ireland peace negotiations Senator George Mitchell , following a look at the relationship between the co-winners of the Nobel Peace Prize John Hume and David Trimble.
ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The Nobel Peace Prize story begins with background on the two Northern - the two politicians from Northern Ireland who shared the prize. John Hume is the leader of the largest Catholic-based party, the Social Democratic Labor Party, and David Trimble heads the largest Protestant-based party, the Unionists. He now holds the highest office in the province, First Minister. We have a report from Terry Lloyd of Independent Television News. TERRY LLOYD, ITN: Once they were deeply divided, separated by politics and bitterness, but John Hume and David Trimble came together at a pop concert given by the Band U2. The leader of the mainly Catholic SDLP came to the political forefront in the civil rights movement in the late 1960's. JOHN HUME: The civil rights movement is an absolutely tenured movement, seeking justice for all.

Two architects of Irish pact win peace prize
Catholic, Protestant honored for role in historic settlement By Kevin Cullen, Globe Staff, 10/17/98 Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, left, U2 singer Bono, center, and SDLP leader John Hume stand together on stage at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. (AP Photo) ast May, after he held aloft the hands of John Hume and David Trimble during a Belfast concert to support the political settlement in Northern Ireland, U2 lead singer Bono stood off to the side of the stage and regarded the two politicians with a wide grin. ''Those boys,'' he mused, indicating Hume and Trimble with his thumb, ''should win the Nobel Prize.'' Bono got his wish yesterday when Hume, the visionary Catholic pacifist who was the prime architect of the peace process, and Trimble, the one-time hard-liner who led a wary Protestant community to compromise with Irish nationalists, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The award was a vindication both of Hume's tireless efforts to bring about peace and reconciliation and Trimble's bold departure from the traditional ''No Surrender'' siege mentality of Protestant unionists who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom.

ULSTER Unionist leader and Northern Ireland First Minister, David Trimble, who became embroiled in controversy when he described the Republic as “the pathetic sectarian, mono-ethnic, mono-cultural State to our south” is to visit Waterford on Thursday next to pick up an international peace award. At a “ticket only” event at St Angela’s Secondary School, Ursuline Convent, the joint Nobel Peace Prize winner will receive the award from the School’s Peace and Justice Group. The family of the late Fr. Rufus Halley, the 57- year-old Columban missionary from Kilotteran, Butlerstown, who was killed in the Philippines last Autumn, will receive the local award posthumously in his memory This year’s special award goes to Colin and Wendy Parry, who showed great compassion in setting up the Tim Parry /Jonathan Ball Trust after their son was killed in the Warrington bombing in March 1993. St. Angela’s Peace and Justice Group comprises of 107 students and five teachers who each year organise a week of activities to campaign on a wide range of issues from human rights abuses to pertinent matters concerning the environment. Since its foundation in 1990, the Peace and Justice Group has developed an enviable reputation as the foremost second level student group campaigning in the cause of peace and justice across the world.

Political correspondent Katie Hannon looks at the career of David Trimble.DAVID TRIMBLE is uncomfortable when confronted with the reality of loyalist violence. Yesterday it was put to him that IRA decommissioning would be all the more difficult to achieve against the background of the loyalist attacks on Catholic homes and the early morning murder of young Catholic Ciaran Cummings on his way to work in Antrim on Wednesday.
He responded that republicans had been responsible for 30 murders since their ceasefire began. He went on to say there was good reason to suspect republicans were responsible for the Cummings murder - and to suggest it was drug related.
The fact that the killing had been claimed by a dissident loyalist paramilitary group mattered little. Dead men can't sue. And thus, in death, Ciaran Cummings' good name was grist to the propaganda mill.
It's not the first time David Trimble has muddied the waters in the wake of loyalist violence to the outrage of nationalists and republicans alike.

THE UNIONIST VOICE The online voice of Unionism USA Interference Back Congressman Crowley Asks Nobel Peace Prize Committee to Re-Examine Awarding Prize to David Trimble Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07) expressed his disappointment with the stalling of the Irish Peace Process due to the rejection of the Ulster Unionist Party of the of the Good Friday Agreement. Congressman Crowley also wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee asking the body to re-examine its awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble. “Once again, the Ulster Unionist Party and their leader David Trimble have led me to question whether they are truly committed to fulfilling the wishes of the majority of the Irish people and establishing a long-lasting peace for the North of Ireland. It is frustrating that one man’s intransigence can stop such a positive process from moving forward. I believe the Nobel Peace Prize Committee acted too hastily in awarding David Trimble with this prize when it has become evident by the actions of the UUP and Mr. Trimble, there was no real peace agreement,” said Congressman Joseph Crowley, Co-Chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs.
The rejection by the Ulster Unionist Party of the Good Friday Peace Agreement has halted the formation of a government including Unionist and Nationalist parties, and could jeopardize the tenuous cease-fire between parties.

NEWSHOUND
Republicans shocked by Adams Nobel snub
(by Ed Moloney, Sunday Tribune
Before people get too excited about Friday's surprise announcement that John Hume and David Trimble had both won the Nobel Peace Prize they ought to remember that the Norwegian committee which dispenses the award has had a less than happy record in its dealings with Northern Ireland peace movements. Many people chart the disintegration of the Peace People to the day in 1976 when they received the honour. It could be argued that by the autumn and winter of that year the Peace People had shot their bolt anyway by failing to condemn state violence with the same vehemence they had for the IRA's, but there can be little doubt that the squabble between Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan over whether they, or rather Betty, should keep the prize money - worth some £600,000 these days - was a killer blow which speeded up the Peace People's demise. John Hume and David Trimble are unlikely to fall out over money but nevertheless while many, naturally, have emphasised the positive influence the award may have on the still infant peace process, it would foolish to ignore the distinct chance that the Nobel Peace prize may have a down side. The first thing to be said about the award is that it has shocked the republican community which supported Gerry Adams all the difficult way through the process. It is not that they deny John Hume the honour - many praise him for standing by Adams during the early, dark and difficult days and deem him worthy of the prize - but that David Trimble got it and Gerry Adams didn't.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Trimble, David Northern Ireland politician, leader of the Ulster Unionist party (or Official Unionist Party, OUP) from 1995 and Northern Ireland's first minister from 1998. Representing the Upper Bann constituency in the House of Commons from 1990, he won the leadership of the OUP in August 1995, when James Molyneaux decided to retire at the age of 75. Trimble shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1998 with John Hume for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, and was one of the leading negotiators in the creation of a cross-community government in Belfast which met for the first time in December 1999 as powers were devolved to the province by the British government. Trimble, originally seen as a hardliner and not likely to move easily into Molyneaux's seat, proved to be more flexible and tolerant than had been predicted. Following his election as OUP leader, he sought to give an impetus to the Northern Ireland peace process, meeting UK prime minister John Major, Irish taoiseach John Bruton, and US president Bill Clinton. Still emphasizing the need for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to decommission its weaponry, he nevertheless suggested a route to all-party talks through elections, although this proposal was opposed by republican spokespersons.
