The 1995 Charles H. Townes Award
For Support of Science and Mathematics Education is Awarded to
Prof. Elizabeth M.Martin
This Award is the namesake of Charles H. Townes, a native South Carolinian and Nobel Laureate in physics. With a concentration in quantum electronics, Townes is internationally known for his invention of the maser/laser. An inductee into the Science Hall of Fame in 1983, Dr. Townes is one of the state's and the nation's singularly distinguished figures of this century. A friend of GSSM, Townes addressed our first Convocation in 1988 and keynoted the Foundation's Celebration 1994 Banquet, personally presenting the Townes Awards. The Townes Award is presented by the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics to honor those persons who go beyond the requirements of their professional positions to assist South Carolina in improving science and mathematics education at all levels. Created by sculptor Dr. J. R. Lischka, the award represents an abstract hand of man embracing a molecule representative of our ambition, outreach and continuing search for knowledge, understanding and application. The award is an original design, with the molecule made of brass and the hand of copper, mounted on a solid walnut base. Each recipient receives a personal sculpture, with a central award kept at the South Carolina Governor's School listing all recipients. Selected from a field of prestigious nominees, this year's recipient embodies the ideal of setting the highest standards for the teaching and understanding of science and mathematics. strong>The 1995 Townes Award recipient is:

110 Nobel Prize Winners Look Ahead
On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001. The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.

Nobel APS Presidents
by Michael Scanlan, APS Meetings Manager
Eighty-two people have served as president of APS, and there are 147 winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics. There have been 21 APS presidents who have also won a Nobel Prize, before, during, and after their tenure. Thirteen received the prize before serving, seven after serving, and one was awarded the Nobel Prize while serving as APS President. The latter was Arthur Schawlow in 1981. Since the prize is announced in October, and the APS presidential term ends in December, it must have been doubly satisfying to win the Nobel and escape APS servitude at roughly the same time. What an exit! Bill Havens, then APS Executive Secretary, said "He arranged to have the 'President of the APS' send Schawlow a congratulatory letter. John Bardeen won the Nobel Prize, served as APS President, and then won the Nobel Prize again, so obviously we didn't wear him out. We counted him as having won the prize before serving, since the second prize was obviously lagniappe. Other Nobel Prize Facts:
  • Firsts . The first APS President to receive the prize was Albert A. Michaelson, who served as APS president 1901-1902, and received the prize in 1907. The first Laureate elected APS president was Arthur H. Compton in 1934 (Nobel in 1927).

The brief title, Laser , is not descriptive of the contents of Nick Taylor's book. The extended title, Laser: The Inventor, the Nobel Laureate, and the Thirty-Year Patent War , doesn't quite do it either. The contrast between the motivation of the inventor, R. Gordon Gould, and the scientist-scholar and Nobel laureate, Charles H. Townes, is emphasized throughout this book. But the book's main purpose seems to be to tell the story of the life of Gouldone piece of the laser story remaining to be told. Joan Lisa Bromberg wrote a well-balanced, scholarly account of laser history

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan: Opponents of the Afghan government continued their attacks over the weekend. On Saturday [April 12], a car packed with explosives blew up in eastern Afghanistan, killing the driver and three other people. In the Pakistani border town of Chaman on Sunday [April 13], gunmen fired on the motorcade of the brother of the Kandahar governor, wounding him and killing another relative.
In Kabul, the Afghan capital, a suspected land mine explosion Sunday night blew a crater that was 6 feet in diameter in a street about 2 miles from the center of the city. It caused no injuries and little damage, the Agence France-Presse news agency quoted police officials as saying. More... CINEMA

Townes Lectures on Black Hole
By Dana Levine EXECUTIVE EDITOR Nobel laureate Charles H. Townes gave a lecture last night discussing the research that proved the existence of a black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Townes received the Nobel Prize in 1964 for his work in quantum electronics, which led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle. He holds the original patent on laser technology along with his brother-in-law, A. L. Schavlow. Townes served at MIT as Provost and Professor of Physics from 1961-1966, and was named Institute Professor in 1966. In 1967, he left MIT to become a University Professor at the University of California. The center of the galaxy Dust particles block all visible forms of radiation, preventing astronomers from viewing our galaxy. In 1932, Karl G. Jansky built a radio telescope and used it to monitor microwaves coming from outer space. It was soon discovered that these radio waves originated in the center of the galaxy. Work in the late 1960s showed that infrared rays also are emitted from a similar location in space. Evidence points to black hole When an electron and a positron collide, gamma rays are emitted. Through the use of interferometry, researchers managed to find evidence of this type of collision in the center of the galaxy, which is characteristic of a black hole.

Nobel winner Nikolai G. Basov dies Basov Born in 1922 in the small town of Usman, in the Lipesk region of Russia, Basov is best known for his work with Profs. A.M. Prokhorov and Charles H. Townes, founding a new branch of science and technology, known as quantum electronics or laser physics. In 1952, Profs. Basov and Prokhorov were the first to demonstrate, on the basis of a theoretical analysis, the feasibility of constructing generators and amplifiers of electromagnetic waves, based on stimulated emission of quantum systems in a state with population inversion. In 1959, Basov and Prokhorov won the Lenin Prize for the discovery of this new principle of generation and amplification of electromagnetic radiation by quantum systems. In 1964, along with Prof. Charles H. Townes, they won the Nobel Prize in physics for fundamental investigations in the field of quantum electronics that have led to the discovery of masers and lasers. Basov's contributions to science in Russia and worldwide are generally recognized. He was twice awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor, he was a Nobel, Lenin, and State Prize laureate, and he received the Lomonosov Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He became a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1962 and a Full Member (Academician) in 1966. He was also a member of the Praesidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Division of Quantum Radiophysics of the Lebedev Physical Institute; for many years he was the Director of the P.N.Lebedev Physical Institute, the Chairman of the Znanie (Knowledge) Society, and the Chief Editor of the journal
