Videos. We will view several videos during the semester. You should take extensive notes on these videos as you view them. Record facts, details, and questions. Because most of these videos run 50-55 minutes, we will have to hold our discussions until the specified days. Consequently, your notes are critical. Review your notes to prepare for the class discussion sessions. If you miss a video there is NO opportunity to make it up. Mark that youwere absent in your notebook even if you copy notes from a classmate.
Wet Labs. During the semester we will grow bacterial viruses (phage) and plant viruses (TMV). Also, we will culture animal cells that are commonly used to grow animal viruses. Unfortunately, we do not have the appropriate facilities to safely grow animal viruses.
Lab Notebook/Journal: Students should keep a log of notes on the videos, readings, discussions and experiments conducted during the laboratory time. All observations and materials related to the lab should be kept in thisnotebook. Put anything about virology you want to include in this notebook. You can include news articles, web pages, popular magazine articles, andpictures, etc. Absences should be recorded.

American microbiologist who won the 1951 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research on yellow fever. Theiler's discovery that mice are susceptible to yellow fever facilitated research and eventual development of a vaccine against the disease in humans. Upon graduation from medical training in tropical medicine in London, he joined the department of tropical medicine at the Harvard Medical School, U.S. and studied infectious diseases. His research on yellow fever led to development of the first attenuated strain of the virus. He moved to the Rockefeller Institute for Medical, N.Y. (1930-64), where with his associates he developed the improved (17-D) vaccine, widely used for human immunization against yellow fever. JANUARY 30 - DEATHS Gerald Malcolm Durrell

In his youth, his family lived on the Greek island of Corfu (1933-8),until pushed back to England by WW II. These five years of his youth gave him material for his book My Family And Other Animals.

SA-born scientist wins Nobel Prize 8 October 2002 South African born and educated molecular biologist Sydney Brenner and two of his colleagues have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their research into the genetic development of organs and the “programmed death” or “suicide” of cells. Brenner, Sir John Sulston of the UK and Robert Horvitz of the US will share the US$1-million prize for identifying the key genes that regulate the formation of organs and the controlled elimination of old cells in a worm approximately 1mm long – and showing that corresponding genes exist in higher species, including humans. Their discoveries “are important for medical research and have shed new light on the pathogenesis of many diseases”, the Nobel Foundation said on its web site. Brenner is the fourth South African born or raised scientist to win a Nobel prize, after CAT scan co-inventor
