By Sally A. Downey
Inquirer Staff Writer

Stephen G. Cary, 86, of Haverford, a Quaker activist and Haverford College administrator, died of cancer Tuesday at his summer home in Chatham, Mass. In 1947, Mr. Cary was directing the efforts of the American Friends Service Committee to clean up and rebuild war-torn Europe when the committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Five years ago, he recounted in a newspaper article how he and a group of workers learned of the award while they were in Amsterdam. "We were tired and overwhelmed and stressed terribly," he said. "We were having to make the decision who got fed and who didn't... . A Dutch Quaker came in with a newspaper that said 'Quakers Win Nobel Peace Prize.' " "We were all stunned into silence," he said. The prize was awarded to the Religious Society of Friends for the humanitarian work done by the American Friends Service Committee in Europe.

About Us
Women in Black nominated for Nobel Peace Prize January 30, 2003 By Stephen Mills TIMES ARGUS STAFF MONTPELIER – Local peace activists are celebrating the nomination of Women in Black (WIB), a worldwide organization of women opposed to violence and war, for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize. WIB member Lucy Nichol of Montpelier said she was surprised and honored the organization had been nominated for the peace prize. She was one of about 50 women who held vigils before and during the war in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and have also actively supported other causes like the women’s movements in Israel and Palestine. “I knew Women in Black had been nominated, but I didn’t know they were nominated by the American Friends Service Committee,” she said. “I certainly feel that it’s well deserved, particularly for the women in Israel. “For about 17 years, they have been out protesting the intervention of their government in Palestinian land and urging that Israeli settlements be disbanded. They’re very courageous women. They’ve had to face hostilities in their communities and towards their families, and have been out there demonstrating all these years. “When we had a demonstration in Montpelier, we had a vigil at the Statehouse and it was very effective. It brings another dimension and aspect to war in this country. So I think it’s wonderful that women who are bringing issues to the fore are being recognized,” she added.

received the 2000 Albert Schweitzer Award of Excellence at the Chapman University opening convocation on September 20, 2000. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, the American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization supported by people who represent a number of faith traditions and are united in their commitment to causes of peace, justice, and humanitarianism all around the world. In the organization's statement, "To Heal a Wounded World," the following call to unity and action is given: "Let us unite in nonviolent strategies to confront and transform powerful institutions of oppression. Let us identify and resist those tactics which exploit narrow self-interest so as to drive wedges between groups and individuals. Let us hold before one another a vision of companionship in our work for justice for all.
"We of the American Friends Service Committee pledge ourselves to offer initiatives that will restore hope and that will inspire a renewed sense of identity and self-worth in those who have suffered. We pledge to support efforts that result in independence, productivity, compassion, and recognition of the values of diversity. We pledge to work with the poor and the materially comfortable, the disenfranchised and the powerful-with all who want to build communities of hope. Let us demonstrate the transforming power of love.

http://www.geocities.com/ricky_yarnell/webtext/nobelprize.htm
In 1947, the Religious Society of Friends was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Prize was awarded, for the first time, to an organization, rather than to an individual, when it was presented to Friends in recognition of a public stand for peace that is unfailing. However, there were some questions about who would accept such an award on behalf of Friends. The question was resolved by awarding the Prize jointly to the British Friends Service Council and the American Friends Service Committee. Both of these organizations had been set up by Friends specifically to address the need for comfort during a time of war. The following excerpts are from a book that details the life of the Friend most responsible for setting up the American Friends Service Committee - Rufus Jones . One of his closest aides was D. Robert Yarnall From David Hinshaw, "Rufus Jones: Master Quaker", G.P. Putnam's Sons New York, 1951 pg 286.
"Friends now had an opportunity to prove to themselves and the Christian world that their testimony against war and the hatred engendered by nationalism was more than a negative attitude, that it had its root in a belief in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, that a constructive faith led to constructive ends. "In 1917 Rufus M. Jones rallied around himself a small group of young Friends in the Haverford College campus, where their training for relief service abroad began. Our generation has become accustomed to think of the American Friends Service Committee as a well established and most respectable organization of international standing. But this beginning at Haverford was small, and its future seemed quite insecure. Rufus Jones had to struggle with the military authorities to have it recognized as a service alternative to military duties. Slowly, and through the unselfish devotion of the participants, it established itself abroad and at home. The story of its courage and success is well known... By the grace of historic justice Rufus Jones was able to experience its crowning recognition in 1947, when the NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE was awarded to the London Yearly Meeting's Service Council and the American Friends Service Committee in the United States.

ACLU of Colorado Seeks to Close Denver Police “Spy Files” on
Peaceful Protesters, Including Quakers and 73-Year-Old Nun
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, March 28, 2002
DENVERThe American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado today filed a class action lawsuit challenging the Denver Police Department’s practice of monitoring and recording the peaceful protest activities of local residents and law-abiding advocacy groups and falsely labeling a Nobel Peace Prize-winning Quaker organization and a 73-year-old nun “criminal extremists.” "The actions of the Denver police are truly disturbing," said Mark Silverstein, Legal Director of the ACLU of Colorado. “By monitoring peaceful expressive activity in this manner and by falsely branding law-abiding organizations as criminals and extremists, the police will make Denver residents afraid to express their views and afraid to participate fully in our democracy.” Those labeled “criminal extremists” include the American Friends Service Committee, an 85-year-old pacifist Quaker group that has won the Nobel Peace Prize for its advocacy of nonviolent social change, and Sister Antonia Anthony, a 73-year-old Franciscan nun whose opinions and lawful protest activity are documented in police files.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 1947
Speech by Gunnar Jahn , Chairman of the Nobel Committee The Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament has awarded this year's Peace Prize to the Quakers , represented by their two great relief organizations, the Friends Service Council in London and the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia.
It is now three hundred years since George Fox established the Society of Friends. It was during the time of civil war in England, a period full of the religious and political strife which led to the Protectorate under Cromwell - today we would no doubt call it a dictatorship. What then happened was what so often happens when a political or religious movement is successful; it lost sight of its original concern: the right to freedom. For, having achieved power, the movement then refuses to grant to others the things for which it has itself fought. Such was the case with the Presbyterians and after them with the Independents. It was not the spirit of tolerance and humanity that emerged victorious.
George Fox and many of his followers were to experience this during the ensuing years, but they did not take up the fight by arming, as men customarily do. They went their way quietly because they were opposed to all forms of violence. They believed that spiritual weapons would prevail in the long run - a belief born of inward experience. They emphasized life itself rather than its forms because forms, theories, and dogmas have never been of importance to them. They have therefore from the very beginning been a community without fixed organization. This has given them an inner strength and a freer view of mankind, a greater tolerance toward others than is found in most organized religious communities.
