Sutherland, Earl W., Jr.
in full EARL WILBUR SUTHERLAND, Jr. (b. Nov. 19, 1915, Burlingame, Kan., U.S.d. March 9, 1974, Miami, Fla.), American pharmacologist and physiologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1971 for isolation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and demonstration of its involvement in numerous metabolic processes that occur in animals. Sutherland graduated from Washburn College (Topeka, Kan.) in 1937 and received the M.D. degree from Washington University Medical School (St. Louis, Mo.) in 1942. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he joined the faculty of Washington University. In 1953 he became director of the department of medicine at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where in 1956 he discovered cyclic AMP. In 1963 he became professor of physiology at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.), and from 1973 until his death he was a member of the faculty of the University of Miami Medical School.

Heidi E. Hamm In 1971, Sutherland was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Med-icine for his discoveries concerning the role of cyclic AMP. He won the highest award that the United States bestows upon a scientist, the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, in 1970. The American Heart Association awarded him a career investigatorship and its highest achievement award with lifetime funding. Sutherland was selected for a membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he received numerous other awards for his research.
In 1973, the President of the United States presented him with the National Medal of Science.
that act as dominant negative probes for G protein-mediated signaling pathways. This combination of structural and functional information has contributed to our understanding of basic mechanisms of cellular activation by a variety of signals and also provides insight into diseases that affect G protein-mediated function. Hamm received a National Science Foundation Research Opportunities for Women Career Development Award and a Glaxo Cardiovascular Discovery Award. She was a Robert H. Mitchel University Scholar in 1995. She currently serves on the External Advisory Board of Scientific Councilors for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research Earl W. Sutherland, Jr. Obituary The following is an excerpt of an obituary for Dr.Sutherland, Jr. published by the New York Times on Sunday, March 10, 1974.
Dr. Earl W. Sutherland Jr. who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physiology and medicine for his basic research on hormones, died here after having undergone surgery for internal bleeding. He was 58.
Dr. Sutherland's fundamental contribution was to increase understanding of the subtly articulated mechanisms that regulate and control living organisms at the cellular level. In 1956, together with Dr. Rall, he discovered cyclic AMP. His future research showed the importance of this chemical.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Claudia Sebeste Sutherland, four children and a brother.

CWRU Nobel Laureates Twelve Nobel Prize winners have connections to CWRU (as current or former faculty or as alumni), including the first American to win the prize in science. Professor Albert Michelson in 1907 received America's first Nobel Prize in science for his research measuring the speed of light and creating precision optical instruments. Much of this work was related to the Michelson-Morley light velocity experiments (with Edward W. Morley), which became the foundation of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity Physiology professor John Macleod shared the 1923 medicine prize for the discovery of insulin Frederick Robbins , now University professor emeritus and dean emeritus, shared the 1954 prize in physiology/medicine for studies of the poliovirus Polykarp Kusch , a 1951 Case Institute of Technology graduate with a B.S. in physics, shared the 1955 prize in physics for research on electrons' magnetic strength that resulted in major modifications to

Visual Perception Researcher Receives Sutherland Prize
Vanderbilt Register, November 6-12, 2000
by Lew Harris Vanderbilt psychology professor Randolph Blake, a national leader in researching visual perception and cognition, received the Earl Sutherland Prize at a Board of Trust luncheon Friday, November 3. The award is presented annually by the Chancellor to a Vanderbilt faculty member who has made a nationally recognized impact in a particular discipline. All current members of the Vanderbilt faculty are eligible, regardless of rank or school, and nominations are solicited from all faculty members. Randolph Blake Blake is perhaps best known for his work on binocular perception - how the brain combines information from the two eyes. He is considered a world expert on binocular rivalry, the perceptual rivalry that occurs between the two eyes when the images in each eye are different. "Randolph Blake is an international leader in visual psychophysics and visual neuroscience," said William T. Newsome, professor of neurobiology at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. "He has published prolifically on a broad range of topics in visual perception. His research is always characterized by keen intellectual insight, excellent experimental design, rigorous analysis and soundly reasoned conclusions. In the psychophysical study of visual perception, Randolph is one of the investigators whom I most trust to get the story right." Blake is an investigator in both the Vanderbilt Vision Research Center and the John F. Kennedy Center. He is a fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychological Society.
