Otto Stern was born in Sorau, Upper Silesia, Germany, on February 17, 1888. In 1892 he moved with his parents to Breslau, where he attended high school. He began to study physical chemistry in 1906, receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Breslau in 1912. In the same year he joined Einstein at the University of Prague and later followed him to the University of Zurich
In 1914 he went to the University of Frankfurt am Main as Privatdocent of Theoretical Physics, remaining there until 1921, except for a period of military service. From 1921 to 1922 he was Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rostock , becoming, in 1923, Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the laboratory at the University of Hamburg , where he remained until 1933. In that year he moved to the United States, being appointed Research Professor of Physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology , Pittsburgh where he remained until 1945, then becoming professor emeritus.

Stern, Otto
(b. Feb. 17, 1888, Sohrau, Ger. [now Zory, Poland]d. Aug. 17, 1969, Berkeley, Calif., U.S.), German-born scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1943 for his development of the molecular beam as a tool for studying the characteristics of molecules and for his measurement of the magnetic moment of the proton. Stern's early scientific work was theoretical studies of statistical thermodynamics. In 1914 he became a lecturer in theoretical physics at the University of Frankfurt and in 1923 a professor of physical chemistry at the University of Hamburg. Stern and Walther Gerlach performed their historic molecular-beam experiment at Hamburg in the early 1920s. By shooting a beam of silver atoms through a nonuniform magnetic field onto a glass plate, they found that the beam split into two distinct beams instead of broadening into a continuous band. This experiment verified the space quantization theory, which stated that atoms can align themselves in a magnetic field only in a few directions (two for silver), instead of in any direction, as classical physics had suggested. ( See also Stern-Gerlach experiment .) In 1933 Stern measured the magnetic moment (strength of a subatomic particle's magnetic property) of the proton by using a molecular beam and found that it was actually about 2 1/2 times the theoretical value. In 1933, when the Nazis rose to power, Stern was compelled to leave Germany. He went to the United States, where he became research professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh. He remained there until his retirement in 1945.

German-American physicist who studied the diffusion of molecular beams and is considered the grandfather of molecular beam research. Otto Frisch worked under him in Hamburg for three years (Frisch 1991, pp. 41-47). With Gerlach, he demonstrated the existence of electronic spin by passing a beam of silver ions through a pair of magnets in the famous Stern-Gerlach experiment For this experiment, he was awarded the 1943 Nobel Prize in physics. He was also the mentor of Rabi

Stern was born in Sorau, Germany (now Zary, Poland), and educated at the University of Breslau. He taught at Technische Hochschule in Zürich and at the universities of Frankfurt and Hamburg. In 1933 he moved to the U.S., accepting the position of research professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pa. Stern developed a method of studying the magnetic moments of atoms ( see ATOM AND ATOMIC THEORY ), atomic nuclei, and protons by directing beams of atoms or molecules through magnetic fields. For this achievement he was awarded the 1943 Nobel Prize in physics.

Otto Stern studied at the universities in Freiburg im Breisgau and in Munich before receiving a doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Breslau (now Wroclaw in Poland) in 1912. During the next two years he worked with Einstein, firstly in Prague and then at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , as a senior lecturer. Returning to Germany, he went to the University of Frankfurt am Main (1915-1921) and then to Restock. In 1923 he became director of the physical chemistry laboratory at the University of Hamburg. Ten years later the Nazis came to power and he was forced to emigrate to the United States where he continued his research work. As a citizen of the United States, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1943 "in recognition of his contribution to the development of the molecular beam method and for his discovery of the magnetic moment of protons". The prize was not presented until 1944 because of the war. In 1947 Stern, then aged 56 and still in full possession of his intellectual powers, retired from research and went to live in California. 19. Stern, Otto
stern, otto (18881969). German physicist who demonstrated by means of the stern-Gerlachapparatus that elementary particles have nobel Prize for Physics 1943
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/S/Stern/1.html
Stern, Otto German physicist who demonstrated by means of the Stern-Gerlach apparatus that elementary particles have wavelike properties as well as the properties of matter that had been demonstrated. Nobel Prize for Physics 1943.
In 1920 Stern and Walther Gerlach (1899-1979) carried out their experiment, which consisted of passing a narrow beam of silver atoms through a strong magnetic field. Classical theory predicted that this field would cause the beam to broaden, but quantum theory predicted that the beam would split into two separate beams. The result, showing a split beam, was the first clear evidence for space quantization - the phenomenon that, in a magnetic field, certain atoms behave like tiny magnets which can only take up particular orientations with respect to the direction of the field. Stern went on to improve this molecular-beam technique and in 1931 was able to detect the wave nature of particles in the beams.
In 1933, Stern measured the magnetic moment of the proton and the deuteron, and demonstrated that the proton's magnetic moment was 2.5 times greater than expected.
