American biochemist , who was a co-recipient (with Christian B. Anfinsen and William H. Stein) of the 1972 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his contribution to the understanding of the connection between chemical structure and catalytic activity of the active centre of ribonuclease molecule, an enzyme. Enzymes are large molecules (macromolecules). The way in which an enzyme accelerates a chemical reaction involves an interaction of the reacting substance (the substrate) with only a limited part of the enzyme molecule, its active site. Moore and Stein have carried out investigations which supplement each other and have led to a complete elucidation of the sequence of amino acids in the enzyme ribonuclease.

German-born U.S. biologist , a pioneer in the study of molecular genetics. He was a co-recipient (with Alfred Day Hershey and Salvador Luria), of the 1969 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for work on the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of bacteriophages (a type of virus that infects bacteria, rather than ordinary cells.) Bacteriophages serve as models for the more complex, less approachable cells of animals and humans. This insight into the nature of viruses and of virus diseases leads to understanding the mechanism of inheritance, development growth and function of tissues and organs. Simon Lake

    Nobel Laureate Christian Anfinsen Dies
Christian Boemer Anfinsen, winner of the 1972 Nobel Prize in chemistry and a Johns Hopkins University biochemist, died Sunday, May 14, of an apparent heart attack suffered at his home in the Baltimore suburb of Pikesville. He was pronounced dead at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown. He was 79. Dr. Anfinsen was a professor of biology at Hopkins, joining the faculty in 1982. He won the Nobel Prize while chief of the laboratory of chemical biology at what is now known as the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases. He shared the Nobel with Rockefeller University scientists Stanford Moore and William H. Stein; they were honored for their clarification of the relationship between the structural properties of proteins and their biological functions. Specifically, Dr. Anfinsen helped to discover how the protein enzyme ribonuclease folds to obtain the characteristic three- dimensional structure that determines its function.

University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences. Six Laureates are currently members of the faculty: James Heckman (Economic Sciences, 2000), Robert Lucas (Economic Sciences, 1995), Robert Fogel (Economic Sciences, 1993), Gary Becker (Economic Sciences, 1992), Ronald Coase (Economic Sciences, 1991) and James Cronin (Physics, 1980). James Heckman , a Professor in Economics and Public Policy, studies methodologies used to measure the impact of social programs, such as minimum-wage legislation and anti-discrimination law. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on analyzing selective samples. Robert Lucas Robert Fogel , a Professor in the Graduate School of Business, shared the award for applying economics and statistics to the study of history. In his work on slavery in the United States, Fogel has argued that the market would not have ended slavery, as it remained a profitable and efficient system for slave owners.
