AUGUST 16 - BIRTHS Wendell Stanley (source) Born 16 Aug 1904; died 15 Jun 1971 Wendell Meredith Stanley was a Spanish-American biochemist , who received (with John Northrop and James Sumner) the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1946 for his work in the purification and crystallization of viruses, thus demonstrating their molecular structure. This work began in 1935 when Stanley crystallized tobacco mosaic virus, the first such purification of a virus. He then believed, incorrectly, that protein was the active agent of the virus. By 1936 he isolated nucleic acids from the tobacco mosaic virus, which later (1955) will be found to cause the viral activity. Artturi Ilmari Virtanen Pour ses recherches et inventions en chimie agricole et de nutrition, et spécialement pour sa méthode de conservation des fourrages. (Helsinki, 1895 - Helsinki, 1973) Le premier prix Nobel finlandais est né à Helsinki le 15 janvier 1895. Après avoir étudié la chimie à l'Université de sa ville natale, il obtient en 1918 le grade de docteur, ayant préparé sous la direction du professeur O. Aschan une thèse sur les acides résineux dans laquelle il établit la constitution de l'acide abiétique de la colophane du pin. Jugeant sa formation insuffisante, il étudie les techniques et les méthodes chimico-physiques et biochimiques à l'occasion de voyages "post-doc" en Suisse, en Allemagne et en Suède. En 1921, il accepte le poste de chef de laboratoire de l'organisation centrale des laiteries coopératives finnoises, la Valio (1). Virtanen est alors nommé maître de conférences à l'Université d'Helsinki (1924-1939); il enseigne également au cours de cette période (1931-1938) à l'Ecole Technique Supérieure d'Helsinki. Pédagogue original, il fait participer les étudiants les plus avancés aux travaux de recherche de l'Institut dont il assure la dierection Il occupe ensuite, de 1939 à 1948, la chaire de biochimie à l'Université d'Helsinki. Tenant de la recherche fondamentale, Virtanen n'a jamais perdu de vue qu'elle devait pouvoir déboucher sur des applications techniques, lors même qu'elle semble s'en éloigner. Researchers at the University have been responsible for some of the most important scientific breakthroughs in the twentieth century, including the discovery of vitamin B1 and the laser. The development of social science as a field of modern scholarship began with Franz Boas, Paul Lazarsfeld, and Robert K. Merton. The work of Jacques Barzun, Donald Keene, Meyer Schapiro, Lionel Trilling, and Mark Van Doren has reshaped our perspectives on literature, art, and culture. However, the faculty's contributions to society go far beyond the products of their academic activities, as Columbia's professors also play a role in the public sphere at both the national and international level. Many have served as advisers to U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, leaders of social reform movements, curators at major art galleries, and consultants to corporations. The faculty's dedication to innovative research and scholarship is equalled only by their devotion to teaching, and the University upholds a singular commitment to undergraduate instruction by its distinguished senior scholars. At Columbia, teaching and research are inextricably linked, and many of the University's most exceptional scholars are also the best teachers. As gifted faculty members move from the creation of knowledge in the laboratory or library to the transfer of knowledge in the classroom, they communicate to students the excitement of intellectual discovery, providing them with a unique opportunity to join in looking beyond the boundaries of the known.
