She studied chemistry and physics at Warsaw and at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1898 she discovered the element polonium. That same year Madame Curie and her husband, Pierre Curie, discovered the element radium. Madame Curie shared the Nobel prize in physics with her husband and A. H. Becquerel in 1903. She was the first woman scientist to win the Nobel prize in chemistry (1911) and was the first person to share in two Nobel prizes. Source: Metcalfe, H. Clark, John E. Williams, and Joseph F. Bibliographic Essays: Life Sciences in the Twentieth Century, by Garland E. Allen, Page 3 EXPERIMENTAL EMBRYOLOGY By the late nineteenth century various biologists began to seek ways of incorporating more experimental methods and causal explanation into what had been basically a descriptive science. This trend was initially most prominent in embryology (developmental biology, in today's terms), but it soon spread to other fields such as heredity, evolution, and, ultimately, ecology, and animal behavior. A useful collection of contemporary reviews papers discussing the state of embryological and morphological work in the 1890s comes from the Marine Biological Laboratory's famous Friday evening lecture series (1889-1899). Selected papers from this series have been reprinted with commentary by Jane Maienschein as Defining Biology: Lectures from the 1890s (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard Univ. Press, 1986). This collection provides easy access to some authoritative but not overly technical primary source material that could easily be assigned to undergraduate students.

    Premio Nobel nel 1935
    Spemann, pioniere della clonazione
    Nel 1902 dimostrò sull'embrione di salamandra la potenzialità creativa delle cellule precoci
    Antonio Tagarelli (*)
    L'ingegneria genetica e le moderne tecniche di clonazione devono molto ad Hans Spemann. Da Aristotele a Marcello Malpighi, da Carl Ernst von Baer a Wilhelm Roux, molti sono stati gli scienziati che hanno studiato le primissime fasi di sviluppo della vita. Ma Spemann in questo campo segnò una grande svolta conoscitiva. E' doveroso, dunque, rendere omaggio a questo genio che, umilmente e con discrezione, esattamente un secolo fa, nel 1902, fece il primo esperimento di clonazione e lo ripropose con metodi piu raffinati nel 1924, ottenendo cosi il Premio Nobel per la Fisiologia e per la Medicina nel 1935.
    Principalmente tre sono i lavori scientifici che inducono a dare a Spemann un ruolo di forte rilievo nell' embriologia sperimentale:
    • 1902: Spemann divide un embrione di salamandra e dimostra che le cellule in fase precoce embrionale possiedono tutta l'informazione genetica necessaria a creare un nuovo organismo;
    • 1924: Spemann effettua il primo esperimento di "trasferimento nucleare";
