Spemann, Hans German embryologist who discovered the phenomenon of embryonic induction - the influence exerted by various regions of an embryo that controls the development of cells into specific organs and tissues. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 1935.
He was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Biology in Berlin 1914-19, and professor at Freiburg-im-Breisgau 1919-35.
Spemann carried out his research on newt embryos. He found that embryos split in half at an early stage of development either died or developed into a whole embryo, but if they were divided at a later stage, half-embryos formed. Next he transplanted various embryonic parts to other areas of the embryo and to different embryos, and demonstrated that one area of embryonic tissue influences the development of neighbouring tissues.
In another series of experiments, Spemann found that embryonic tissue from newts always gives rise to newt organs, even when transplanted into a frog embryo, and that frog tissue always develops into frog organs in a newt embryo.
In the course of this work, Spemann pioneered techniques of microsurgery.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Fässler Institut für Geschichte, Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte, Dresden, Germany *Request reprints from: faessler@spwnw1.phil.tu-dresden.de From the Introduction In 1897, at the beginning of his scientific career, Hans Spemann (Fig. l a,b) entered a field of research which was not only new and modern, but which was also not well accepted by German biologists persisting in traditional styles of scientific thought. At the end of his life, he was one of the most renowned zoologists world-wide (Leclerq and Dagnèlie, 1966) and Entwicklungsmechanik was established as an important experimental and causal-analytic working discipline in biology. In 1935 Spernann received the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology as the first - and up till a few months ago only - embryologist. The prize-winning discovery, the so-called organizer effect, was the dominant topic in embryological research during the 1930s and, despite decades of subsequent disregard, in our days is experiencing a true renaissance. Spemann's outstanding merits were his experimental and conceptual contributions to the biological discipline Entwickiungsmechanik (or Entwicklungsphysiologie , the term he preferred). His results helped to abandon the Roux-Driesch controversy from the end of the 19th century and illuminated the fundamental but enigmatic mechanism of embryonic induction. The discovery of the organizer effect in Spemann's laboratory and the search for its physico-chemical foundations initiated the biochemical embryology of the 1930s and 1940s. On the basis of his experimental work, Spemann instructed and inspired a large group of younger scientists, among them Hilde Mangold, Otto Mangold, Johannes Holtfreter, Viktor Hamburger, Hermann Bautzmann, Else Wehmeier, Oskar Schotté, Eckhard Rotmann and Salonne Gluecksoh(-Waelsch). Collectively they might be called the Freiburg school of experimental embryology which flourished especially during the 1920s.

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . PIONEER OF A NEW ERA
Viktor Hamburger and the Emergence of Experimental Embryology and Neuroembryology
Dr. Hamburger's pioneering work in experimental embryology and neuroembryology is the subject of a special symposium during the Society's 30th Annual Meeting in New Orleans. For more information on this and other Annual Meeting symposia and lectures, watch for the Preliminary Program, which will mail to all members in early July. A video-taped archival interview with Dr. Hamburger is part of the Society's "History of Neuroscience in AutobiographyÓ series, featuring senior neuroscientists who have played an integral role in shaping modern neuroscience. By Ronald W. Oppenheim, Ph.D. Wake Forest University School of Medicine
On July 9 of this year, Viktor Hamburger, one of the giants of modern embryology and neuroscience, will celebrate his 100th birthday. Although it is difficult to pinpoint a specific date as marking the beginning of a discipline, the period spanning the turn of the 20th century (~ 1890-1910) is often considered to be the birth date of both experimental embryology and neuroembryology. Accordingly, 1900 can be reasonably considered as marking the beginning of these fields, thereby making the year 2000 the centenary of both Viktor Hamburger and the disciplines with which he is so closely associated.
