This prestigious award is sponsored by the National Association of Business Economists (NABE) and has been given annually since 1982 to a distinguished economist. Other recipients of the Adam Smith Award include Hoover fellows and Nobel laureates Gary S. Becker, Milton Friedman, Douglass North, and the late George Stigler. The Adam Smith Address, which is given by the award’s honoree, is sponsored by Dow Jones, publishers of the Wall Street Journal . Boskin gave the Adam Smith Address in October during the 40th annual meeting of the National Association of Business Economists. Titled “Capitalism and Its Discontents,” the address was published as the lead article in the January 1999 issue of Business Economics.

Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof
George Akerlof

Press Release: The 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
KUNGL. VETENSKAPSAKADEMIEN
THE ROYAL SWEDISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
13 October 1993
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
has decided to award the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for contributions to the development of methods within DNA-based chemistry
with half to
Dr Kary B. Mullis , La Jolla, California, U.S.A., for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method,
and half to
Professor Michael Smith , University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, for his fundamental contributions to the establishment of oligonucleotide-based, site-directed mutagenesis and its development for protein studies.
Decisive progress in gene technology through two new methods: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and site-directed mutagenesis
The chemical methods that Kary B. Mullis and Michael Smith have each developed for studying the DNA molecules of genetic material have further hastened the rapid development of genetic engineering. The two methods have greatly stimulated basic biochemical research and opened the way for new applications in medicine and biotechnology.
The applications of Mullis' PCR method are already many. It is for example possible using simple equipment to multiply a given DNA segment from a complicated genetic material millions of times in a few hours, which is of very great significance for biochemical and genetic research. The method offers new possibilities particularly in medical diagnostics, and is used, for example, for discovering HIV virus or faulty genes in hereditary diseases. Researchers can also produce DNA from animals that became extinct millions of years ago by using the PCR method on fossil material.

The first annual Ig Nobel Tour of the UK was a rousing success. A merry band of Ig Nobel Prize winners joined Marc Abrahams (editor of the Annals of Improbable Research and master of ceremonies of the annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony) in barnstorming six cities in eight days. We were joined by competitors for the title of "Britain's Most Succinct Scientist." The London show, on March 6, also featured jazz singer Sandra Lawrence and pianist Phil Mead performing songs from Ig Nobel operas; they were accompanied by a chorus of scientists-turned-insects. Here are a few quick highlights from the tour. Ig Nobel Prize winners Sir Michael Berry (left 2000 Physics Prize , shared with Andre Geim, for using magnets to levitate a frog) and Len Fisher ( 1999 Physics Prize , for devising the optimal way to dunk a biscuit) field questions from the audience. Berry, Fisher, and three other Ig Nobel Prize winners each gave five-minute lecture-demonstrations. Each was attempting, to the extent possible, to explain what they did and why. Vancouver, BC, Canada - Provincial government funding of $4.75 million for the Genome Sequence Centre at the BC Cancer Agency will help build a genomics industry in B.C. that will support research into new treatments and cures for cancer and other genetic diseases, Technology Minister Graeme Bowbrick announced today. The Minister of Technology, Graeme Bowbrick (right) with Dr. Steven Jones, Head of Bioinformatics (center), and Dr. Michael Smith, Director of the GSC (left). "We are building a world-class genome research cluster so B.C. researchers have the latest knowledge and tools to explore how genes influence the onset of disease and to support the discovery of preventions and cures," said Bowbrick. "Health care is a priority, and this government is committed to improving the health of British Columbians at both the treatment level and the research level where treatments of the future are discovered."

New UBC biotech building named for Nobel laureate Michael Smith Nobel prizewinner and University of British Columbia Prof. Emeritus Michael Smith will be honoured with a new research facility on campus that will bear his name. UBC President Martha Piper made the announcement at a ceremony held today. "We are delighted to recognize Michael's extraordinary achievements and contribution to this university and the scientific community as a whole," says Piper. "His vision for the Biotechnology Lab has brought together a remarkable group of award-winning young scientists who are making contributions in many disciplines." The Michael Smith Building, a 7,400-square-metre two-storey facility at the centre of campus, will house the Biotechnology Laboratory which Smith founded in 1987. Research at the laboratory focuses on human and animal molecular genetics, plant and forestry molecular genetics, and fermentation and bio-process engineering. "I am honoured by this decision, especially since I really believe that I was doing the job I was paid to do," says Smith. "As founding director, I am enormously happy to see the faculty, post-doc students, and scientists getting the facility that they desperately need and have earned."
