1993 Nobel Prize Laureate, Michael Smith
Until he won the 1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry, Dr. Michael Smith was one of the best kept secrets in the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE). Dr. Smith, a biochemist at the University of British Columbia (UBC), was the Scientific Director of the Protein Engineering Network of Centres of Excellence (PENCE) during the first five years of the network, which depends heavily upon his winning method in protein engineering. Now all Canadians can take inspiration from Dr. Smith and his achievements, and from the knowledge that this country has the means to recognize and support such talent and out-standing research. PENCE relies upon Dr. Smith's revolutionary technique in DNA-based chemistry to study the structure and function of proteins, which are the building blocks of living cells, and to improve enzymes and other proteins of potential economic benefit. Improved proteins can lead to new ways of treating cancer and infectious diseases, and can be used as specialized enzymes in the fine chemical industry and in a variety of industrial products. Dr. Smith's genetic engineering technology is also taught to and used by promising young researchers at the UBC Biotechnology Laboratory. Students involved in the NCE program also study the method at these advanced laboratories.

Their track record for innovation is indeed impressive. Many of our scientists take pride in knowing they have directly improved the quality of life for patients, and still others, through basic research, have offered hope for future advances in patient care. Here are but a few of their notable achievements:
  • Dr. Connie Eaves demostrated hematopoietic stem cell expansion in vitro and the deficiency in human leukaemic stem cells that allows their selective depletion in vitro
  • Dr. Gerry Krystal isolated and cloned the gene encoding a crucial signalling function, SH2-containing inositol phosphatase (SHIP)
  • Dr. Peter Lansdorp adapted fluorescence in-situ hybridization techniques to quantitatively measure the length of human telomeres
  • Dr. Stephen Lam and associates developed the LIFE device, a fluorescence endoscope for early detection of lung cancer
  • Dr. Branko Palcic

Hilda Ching
Hilda Ching has contributed an enormous amount to the development of scientific promotion, particularly in the education of young women. A parasitologist, her actvities have included being the distinguished Ruth Wynn Woodward Chair in Women's Studies. She has been a member of various scientific organizations, including the International Congress for Parasitology and the Western Society of Naturalists. Aside from SCWIST, she is also an active member of the Association of Women in Science.
Hilda and SCWIST
In 1983, Hilda initiated the first conference for Canadian Women in Science (SCWIST) which was a major event and marked the creation of SCWIST. This led to a multitude of other science-related programs for women and girls. Some that Hilda created include Visiting Scientists in the Schools which led to the greatly successful Scientists and Innovators in the Schools program and then later the respected publication Catching the Wave. Hilda was also the executive producer of "What do Scientists Do?", a video profiling women scientists in various fields.
Other Activities
Outside of SCWIST, Hilda has been a consultant for various parasitology and marine biology projects. She has given public lectures on topics ranging from gender equality to career alternatives for women. In addition, Hilda has been in such committees as the Canadian Labour Force Development Board, the Women do Math annual conference, and the Eastern Indonesia Universities Development project. Throughout her career, Hilda has published 44 scientific research papers that establish her as an authority on the identification of parasites that may affect human health, and those which infect shellfish and shorebirds.

THE EJLB-CIHR MICHAEL SMITH CHAIR IN NEUROSCIENCES AND MENTAL HEALTH
In December 2001, The EJLB Foundation awarded a CAN$1,000,000 grant for the creation of a research Chair honouring the memory of Dr. Michael Smith, 1993 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, a former member of the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Committee who was instrumental in the setting up of the Scholar Research Programme, a strong supporter of the Foundation and a trusted friend.
The purpose of the Chair, to be awarded for five (5)-year non-renewable terms, is to allow a Canadian university, or affiliated research institute, to attract to Canada a world-renowned scientist in neurosciences and mental health.
Under the terms of the Agreement setting up The EJLB-CIHR Michael Smith Chair in Neurosciences and Mental Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will also provide a $300,000 establishment grant, the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) a yearly $50,000 support grant and the selected university will nominate the candidate for a Canada Research Chair of up to $200,000/year, as well as apply on his/her behalf for an infrastructure grant through the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI).
The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) is responsible for the investment and management of the Foundation's grant.

Dr. Michael Smith
1995 Inductee
Dr. Michael Smith was born in Blackpool, England in 1932. Following completion of his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester, Dr. Smith immigrated to Canada as a research fellow and joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia in 1966. It was in these early days of the genetics revolution that Dr. Smith developed a critical technique that has become central to the field of genetic engineering known as site directed mutagenesis , the deliberate and predictable altering of the coding sequence of genes. As a result, the structure of proteins (the translation products of genes) can now be experimentally altered to examine the functional role of each of the building blocks of proteins. This technique of manipulating DNA has become a fundamental tool in biotechnology used to generate not only new knowledge but new products; for example, the production of human insulin by bacteria or yeast. In 1993, Dr. Smith was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. Dr. Smith served as Director of the University of British Columbia Biotechnology Laboratory and was the founding director of the Network of Centres of Excellence in Protein Engineering.
