Simon, Claude Claude Simon was born in 1913 at Tananarive (Madagascar). His parents were French, his father being a career officer who was killed in the first World War. He grew up with his mother and her family in Perpignan in the middle of the wine district of Roussillon. Among his ancestors was a general from the time of the French Revolution.
After secondary school at Collège Stanislas in Paris and brief sojourns at Oxford and Cambridge he took courses in painting at the André Lhote Academy. He then travelled extensively through Spain, Germany, the Soviet Union, Italy and Greece. This experience as well as those from the Second World War show up in his literary work. At the beginning of the war Claude Simon took part in the battle of the Meuse (1940) and was taken prisoner. He managed to escape and joined the resistance movement. At the same time he completed his first novel, Le Tricheur ("The Cheat", published in 1946), which he had started to write before the war.
He lives in Paris and spends part of the year at Salses in the Pyrenees.

The principal focus of Jean Duffy’s research has been the nouveau roman , on which she has published extensively, though her research interests encompass the work of several other major figures in twentieth-century French literature, as well as film and art. In recent years, her research has centred on the relationship between literature and the visual arts. The publications resulting from this research address a wide range of issues relating to verbal/visual inquiry: in particular, the various roles played by the visual work in the text (narrative generator, mise en abyme , thematic source, structural model, fictional fetish), the exploitation of the ‘artistic biography’ as intertext, and the exchange and adaptation of visual and literary concepts and practices (assemblage, bricolage , defamiliarisation, generation, intertextuality). In 1998 she published

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

In memory of Prof. Jean Claude Simon.
by Prof. Sebastiano Impedovo
Professor Jean Claude SIMON passed away on the 16th of February 2000. As Professor Herbert Freeman wrote, "the death of Simon was attributed to complications which arose from some relatively routine surgery a few weeks earlier", so I would never have expected such an early death. Professor Simon never gave the impression of having health problems, on the contrary, every time I met him he seemed to be in perfect form and I can tell that during our morning jogging sessions I had to work to keep up with him, even though he was twenty years older than me! His death for me personally means the loss of a good friend and, without any doubt, for the entire handwriting recognition community the loss of one of the best experts in the field. I actually met Professor SIMON in Paris at the 8th ICPR, held from the 27th to the 31st of October 1986, when he was the General Chairman of the conference. In fact I had seen him before on other occasions, especially when he was the President of the IAPR between 1982 and 1984, but I was only able to have a long talk with him in Paris at the meeting for the election of the TC-11 President. It was a special day for Simon, for Prof. Srihari who was elected TC-11 President, and also for me. Afterwards Professor Simon and I corresponded frequently and soon we had built up a good relationship. Some years later he invited me to present the lecture: "On-line signature verification systems through stroke analysis" at the meeting "New Concepts in Computer Science", held in Paris on the 3rd and 4th of October 1990, to celebrate the end of his academic career, when he retired from Pierre Marie Courier Paris VI University.
