Jan Wiktor Sienkiewicz " Quo vadis?" 85 years from the death of Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916)

Jan Wiktor Sienkiewicz " Quo vadis?" 85 years from the death of Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916)
I have seen another time the Hollywood cinematography reduction of the Henryk Sienkiewicz’ romance, now historical because belonging to the classics of the films history, "Quo vadis?", that was remembered to the Italian RAI TV viewers in August 1996. It may be only an happy concurrence, or perhaps an evidence of memory that the Italian television has offered like a tribute to the Polish writer in the 150 th anniversary of his birth?. The anniversary in Poland has give the occasion to the "Sienkiewicz’s Year", that was celebrated in 1996, in the finality of the memory and of the approach to the figure and to the rich heritage of the writer lived by the author of the written masterpieces "so that the Polishes encourage each other". During this year the Poland will wait for the new polish film "Quo vadis?" (recorded for Jerzy Kawalerowicz). How it will be? We will see it at the end of the year. This romance has won in 1905 the first Nobel prize in the history of Polish literature. With this romance the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz begun to be known, probably better than our contemporary, among the "older generations of Italian readers". "Quo vadis?" if I am not wrong, has been in the list of the compulsory books in Italian schools.

After Bread

In Desert and Wilderness
The renowned Polish novelist, inspired by his travels through Africa, gives us a fascinating book recounting adventures and experiences of two children during an escape from Khartoum after the death of General Gordon, and their flight through Africa to the Indian Ocean. The children’s adventures in the Egyptian desert and African wilderness at the time of the Mahdi (1848 - 1885) also contain a vast quantity of information about the plant and animal life of the African swamps and jungle.

Quotations
Polish Writer
An excessive preponderance of an idealistic mood is harmful to society: it creates daydreaming, political Don Quixotism, hope for heavenly intervention. This is an undeniable truthbut it is also true that every extreme is harmful. Every novelist should write something for children at least once in his lifetime. Generally speaking, all the people of the so-called upper classes do not live a true, real life. Below us something always happens, there is the struggle for life, for bread, a life full of diligent work, animal necessities, appetites, passions, everyday efforts,a palpable life, which roars, leaps, and tumbles like ocean waves, and we are sitting eternally on terraces, discussing art, literature, love, women; strangers to that other life far removed from it, obliterating, out of the seven, the six work-days. Without being conscious of it, our inclinations, nerves, and soul are fit only for holidays. Immersed into blissful dilettantism as in a warm bath, we are half awake, half dreaming. Consuming leisurely our wealth, and our inherited supply of nerves and muscles, we gradually lose our foothold upon the soil. I die too soon.
