George Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw was a writer of great élan and perception who brought much colour and vivacity to contemporary life of the period. His writings were diverse and covered the fields of politics, religion, and literature. He was noted for his satire and verbal artistry, the controversy around him, his politics, and the persona of 'GBS'. He was an early and devoted member of the Fabian Society, joining it in September 1884, and he contributed to and edited the definitive Fabian Essays in Socialism (1889). He adopted a pragmatic and welfare-oriented approach to politics in which the concepts of right and faith were central to a progressive socialist realism seeking equality. He was a local government councillor in St.Pancras from 1897-1903.  He and the Webbs were to disagree over the School's purpose and its political neutrality. For Shaw the School should be explicitly collectivist in outlook and  teaching; for the Webbs, the School had one purpose: unbiased and objective study to discover the truth of the matter. The Webb perspective was to guide the School, and Shaw's political energies were absorbed elsewhere. Shaw first made his name as a music critic (1888-94) and by his dramatic criticism (1895-98). Shortly after it was already translated into four languages. In the following years it didn’t lose its attractivity. Already in 1935 the first movie was filmed and since 1956 it is world famous as the musical „My Fair Lady“ by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. But before it’s premiere this success was never thought of. Not just the problems of casting a fifty year old for the 18 year-old character Eliza, but differences between Shaw‘s and the director‘s methods of putting a play on stage. Beerbohm, the director, also wanted to change the end of the play to a happy ending other than Shaws authentic version. This happy ending is, by the way, one of the major differences between „Pygmalion“ and the musical „My Fair Lady“.

Though he is best known as a playwright, Shaw was also a respected critic, journalist, novelist, and essayist. A noted social reformer, Shaw wrote plays which dramatized social commentaries, and in 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his achievements. Today, his works are studied in literature classes worldwide and are considered classics of modern drama. Born July 26, 1856, in Dublin, Ireland, Shaw was given a Protestant upbringing by his father, a civil servant, and his mother, a music teacher and a vocalist. Through his mother, Shaw gained an appreciation for classical music that he later credited as the base interest which led to his eventual successes. The young Shaw disliked organized education; at age fourteen, he decided the whole schooling system was valueless and promptly dropped out. But he had a passion for learning, so Shaw gave himself an informal education. He read voraciously, and he frequented the National Gallery of Dublin, where he studied art and history. At age twenty, Shaw made the trip to London to begin a literary career. He made a name for himself as a music critic, and soon he was writing criticisms of art, literature, and drama. In 1876 he came to London to work as a journalist and arts critic, struggled for some years, but eventually embarked on a literary career. His first novels written in the 1880's, were all failures, but he gained fame in other areas: as a socialist pamphleteer, a critic, an orator, and a campaigning vegetarian. In the 1890's, inspired by Ibsen, he began to write modern comic drama, which was hugely successful. Over the following years, his playsincluding Arms and the Man Candida (1897), and John Bull's Other Island (1904)became internationally admired. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925 following the publication of his most acclaimed play, St. Joan , in 1924. Shaw was 94 when he died, attributing longevity to his vegetarian lifestyle. Ellen Terry was the most celebrated actress of her generation. After several false starts and two broken marriages, she began, in 1878 a 24 year partnership with the actor Sir Henry Irving, as his leading lady. The couple became famous internationally for their Shakespearean productions, but their partnership on stage was never formalized in marriage. When Irving's affection for her began to fade, Ellen began the famous "paper courtship" with Shaw. After the correspondence petered out she married in 1907 for the third and last time. Her new husband American actor James Carew; he was some 30 years younger than Ellen and the marriage soon broke up. She continued her career on the stage, in films, and as a Shakespearean lecturer, and was made a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in the year Shaw became a Nobel Laureate.
