The Beginning He decides to study medicine When Schweitzer informed his friends and parents that he would enroll as a medical student there was shock, puzzlement and alarm. His friends around Europe were not ready to accept this fact and wrote to him about their immediate objections. His father expressed disappointment. Schweitzer was irritated with the shallowness and conservatism of his friends. The family suggested that the whole idea was foolish and he would bury his life and talent. He becomes a Doctor and was rejected Schweitzer rearranged his life to meet the need expressed by the Parish Missionary Society. On the basis of his theological views, Schweitzer was rejected by the Society on the grounds that "It would only intensify their problems by encouraging intellectuals and free-thinkers who could only disrupt the mission enterprise and confuse the natives with their theological improvisations." They were not about to sponsor Schweitzer and open the floodgates to other liberals and radicals. He would return to the Paris Missionary Society not as a beggar soliciting support but as a self-sufficient doctor offering his professional services. They, not he, as he saw it, would have a chance to redeem themselves.

The son of a Lutheran pastor, Albert Schweitzer was born in Alsace, then part of Germany and later part of France. By the age of 29, Schweitzer had already authored three books and made valuable contributions in the fields of music, religion, and philosophy. He was an acclaimed organist and world authority on Bach, a church pastor and principal of a theological seminary, and a university professor with a doctorate in philosophy.
In 1915 he came upon the insight, "Reverence for Life," as the elementary and universal principle of ethics which he had been seeking. From the "will to live" evidenced in all living beings, Schweitzer demonstrated the ethical response for humans—reverence for life. By stressing the interdependence and unity of all life, he was a forerunner of the environmental and animal welfare movements.
In 1953, at the age of 78, Albert Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 1952. In the speeches and writings during the last twelve years of his life, he emphasized the dangers of nuclear energy, nuclear testing, and the nuclear arms race between the superpowers.

January 1997 Albert Schweitzer was born on January 14, 1875, in Kaysersburg, France. He based his personal philosophy on a "reverence for life? and on a deep commitment to serve humanity through thought and action. For his many years of humanitarian effort, Schweitzer was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. By the time he was 21, Schweitzer had decided on the course for his life. For nine years he would dedicate himself to the study of science, music, and theology. The he would devote the rest of his life to serving humanity directly. Before he was 30 he was a respected writer on theology, an accomplished organist, and an authority on the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1905 Schweitzer decided to become a medical missionary. He studied medicine from 1905 to 1913 at the University of Strasbourg. He also raised money to establish ha hospital in French Equatorial Africa. He founded a hospital there in 1913 which over the years grew into a large institution that serves thousands of Africans. Schweitzer used his $33,000 Nobel Prize to expand the hospital and to build a leper colony. In 1955 Queen Elizabeth II awarded Schweitzer the "Order of Merit," Britains highest civilian honor.

"...the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve."
Albert Schweitzer has been given many titles: gifted musician, brilliant theologian, and even saint. Albert Schweitzer was no saint, but he was a man sensitive to the suffering of all living things. This sensitivity is a current that runs throughout his life from his childhood in Alsace, to his studies and scholarly search for truth, and in his example of selflessness: his hospital in French Gabon. Throughout his life he remained an idealist with a childlike faith in humanity, refusing to let disillusionment overtake him, even in old age. Albert Schweitzer touched thousands of lives directly and through his teachings and life example. He inspired millions to revere life and believe in mankind. At twenty-one, Schweitzer allotted himself nine more years "to himself." By thirty he would find his calling and dedicate his life in service to humanity . If only one in one thousand were to follow such an example! The sermons Schweitzer heard as a child had been burned into his memory. He remembered one sermon on sacrifice where his father spoke of a missionary doctor in South Africa. He worked to heal the ignored who would otherwise suffer and die, their village witch doctors helpless to do anything. It was by this memory that Schweitzer heard his calling. In 1905, Schweitzer began studying medicine while still pursuing his preaching, research, and music.
