Albert Schweitzer (January 14, 1875-September 4, 1965) was born into an Alsatian family which for generations had been devoted to religion, music, and education. His father and maternal grandfather were ministers; both of his grandfathers were talented organists; many of his relatives were persons of scholarly attainments. Schweitzer entered into his intensive theological studies in 1893 at the University of Strasbourg where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy in 1899, with a dissertation on the religious philosophy of Kant, and received his licentiate in theology in 1900. He began preaching at St. Nicholas Church in Strasbourg in 1899; he served in various high ranking administrative posts from 1901 to 1912 in the Theological College of St.Thomas, the college he had attended at the University of Strasbourg. In 1906 he published The Quest of the Historical Jesus , a book on which much of his fame as a theological scholar rests. Meanwhile he continued with a distinguished musical career initiated at an early age with piano and organ lessons. Only nine when he first performed in his father's church, he was, from his young manhood to his middle eighties, recognized as a concert organist, internationally known. From his professional engagements he earned funds for his education, particularly his later medical schooling, and for his African hospital. Schweitzer has been called the greatest Christian of his time. He based his personal philosophy on a "reverence for life" and on a deep commitment to serve humanity through thought and action. For his many years of humanitarian efforts Schweitzer was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. By the time he was 21 Schweitzer had decided on the course for his life. For nine years he would dedicate himself to the study science, music, and theology. Then he would devote the rest of his life to serving humanity directly. Before he was 30 he was a respected writer on theology, an accomplished organist, and an authority on the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach In 1904 Schweitzer was inspired to become a medical missionary after reading an evangelical paper regarding the needs of medical missions. He studied medicine from 1905 to 1913 at the University of Strassbourg. He also raised money to establish a hospital in French Equatorial Africa. He founded a hospital there in 1913. Over the years built a large hospital that served thousands of Africans. Schweitzer used his $33,000 Nobel Prize to expand the hospital and to build a leper colony. In 1955 Queen Elizabeth II awarded Schweitzer the "Order of Merit," Britain's highest civilian honor.

Albert Schweitzer's Nobel Peace Prize Lecture Albert Schweitzer was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. However, his duties in Africa prevented him from appearing at the award ceremony, which was held December 10, 1953, in Oslo, Norway. The award was therefore formally presented to the French ambassador, a Mr. de Monicault, who read a message from Dr. Schweitzer expressing his gratitude, his regret at having to be absent, and his intention to visit Oslo the following year. Schweitzer was able to travel to Europe in 1954, and delivered his Nobel speech on November 4, 1954, at Oslo University. As the following blurb from the November 3 1954 New York Times indicates, Schweitzer was very warmly greeted upon his arrival in Oslo: Dr. Albert Schweitzer, winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize, arrived today [Nov. 2] to receive his diploma and gold medal. Never before has the winner of this award aroused such public interest here. The railway station was crowded and the police had to escort the 79-year-old philosopher and humanitarian to a car. A line formed last night for tickets to tomorrow's presentation ceremony. King Haakon received Dr. Schweitzer at the palace. Dr. Schweitzer said he would return to Africa and use the prize money for his leper hospital at Lambarene. Oslo newspapers are inviting subscriptions to a fund to be used as Dr. Schweitzer wishes.

Schweitzer, Albert Schweitzer, photograph by Yousuf Karsh Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts in behalf of "the Brotherhood of Nations." The eldest son of a Lutheran pastor, Schweitzer studied philosophy and theology at the University of Strasbourg, where he took the doctor's degree in philosophy in 1899. At the same time, he was also a lecturer in philosophy and a preacher at St. Nicholas' Church, and the following year he received a doctorate in theology. His book Von Reimarus zu Wrede The Quest of the Historical Jesus ) established him as a world figure in theological studies. In this and other works he stressed the eschatological views (concerned with the consummation of history) of Jesus and St. Paul, asserting that their attitudes were formed by expectation of the imminent end of the world. During these years Schweitzer also became an accomplished musician, beginning his career as an organist in Strasbourg in 1893. Charles-Marie Widor, his organ teacher in Paris, recognized Schweitzer as a Bach interpreter of unique perception and asked him to write a study of the composer's life and art. The result was (1905). In this work Schweitzer viewed Bach as a religious mystic and likened his music to the impersonal and cosmic forces of the natural world.
