Jean-Paul Sartre , (1905-1980) born in Paris in 1905, studied at the
While the publication of his early, largely psychological studies, L'Imagination (Outline of a Theory of the Emotions), 1939, and (The Psychology of Imagination), 1940, remained relatively unnoticed, Sartre's first novel, (Nausea), 1938, and the collection of stories Le Mur (Intimacy), 1938, brought him immediate recognition and success. They dramatically express Sartre's early existentialist themes of alienation and commitment, and of salvation through art.
His central philosophical work, (Being and Nothingness), 1943, is a massive structuralization of his concept of being, from which much of modern existentialism derives. The existentialist humanism which Sartre propagates in his popular essay L'Existentialisme est un humanisme (Existentialism is a Humanism), 1946, can be glimpsed in the series of novels, (The Roads to Freedom), 1945-49.
Sartre is perhaps best known as a playwright. In Les Mouches (The Flies), 1943, the young killer's committed freedom is pitted against the powerless Jupiter, while in Huis Clos (No Exit), 1947, hell emerges as the togetherness of people.

Sartre, Jean-Paul
(b. June 21, 1905, Paris, Franced. April 15, 1980, Paris), French novelist, playwright, and exponent of Existentialism a philosophy acclaiming the freedom of the individual human being. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964, but he declined it.
Early life and writings
Sartre lost his father at an early age and grew up in the home of his maternal grandfather, Carl Schweitzer, uncle of the medical missionary Albert Schweitzer and himself professor of German at the Sorbonne. The boy, who wandered in the Luxembourg Gardens of Paris in search of playmates, was small in stature and cross-eyed. His brilliant autobiography, Les Mots Words, 1964), narrates the adventures of the mother and child in the park as they went from group to groupin the vain hope of being acceptedthen finally retreated to the sixth floor of their apartment "on the heights where (the) dreams dwell." "The words" saved the child, and his interminable pages of writing were the escape from a world that had rejected him but that he would proceed to rebuild in his own fancy. jeune Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter

Educated in his native Paris and at German universities, Jean-Paul Sartre taught philosophy during the 1930s at La Havre and Paris. Captured by the Nazis while serving as an Army meteorologist, Sartre was a prisoner of war for one year before returning to his teaching position, where he participated actively in the French resistance to German occupation until the liberation. Recognizing a connection between the principles of existentialism and the more practical concerns of social and political struggle, Sartre wrote not only philosophical treatises but also novels, stories, plays, and political pamphlets. Sartre's personal and professional life was greatly enriched by his long-term collaboration with Simone de Beauvoir Although he declined the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964, Sartre was one of the most respected leaders of post-war French culture, and his funeral in Paris drew an enormous crowd. Sartre's philosophical influences clearly include Descartes Kant Marx Husserl , and Heidegger . Employing the methods of descriptive phenomenology to new effect, his

Born in Paris, Sartre, after receiving a doctorate in philosophy, went on to teach at LeHavre, Lyon and Paris. During WWII he was active in the resistance, and at the first of the war he was taken prisoner for nine months. Sartre gave up teaching after the war and devoted all his time to writing (he declined the '64 Nobel Prize for Literature); he emerged as the leading light of the left-wing, the supporters of which could be found at the Cafe de Flore on the left bank. (Sartre eventually broke with the communists.) Sartre was an exponent of atheistic existentialism: "Existence is prior to essence. Man is nothing at birth and throughout his life he is no more than the sum of his past commitments. To believe in anything outside his own will is to be guilty of 'bad Faith.' Existentialist despair and anguish is the acknowledgement that man is condemned to freedom. There is no God, so man must rely upon his own fallible will and moral insight. He cannot escape choosing." ( Chambers The philosophy of existentialism depicts man, alone and afraid in a world he never made. Existentialism rejects abstract theoretical systems such as the one espoused by

Critical verdict Sartre, political activist, playwright, novelist, existentialist philosopher, biographer and literary critic, was considered one of the leading interpreters of the post-war generation's world view. Though "Hell is other people" is the maxim he's left the world, the potential of the individual to make a hell of himself is a more accurate summation of his legacy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964 "for his work which, rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age". He declined it on the grounds that such honours could interfere with a writer's responsibilities to his readers - he didn't want to be turned into "an institution".

Shapiro Those who have received the Nobel Prize in literature have always been pleased and honored to accept this recognition. Yet Jean-Paul Sartre, the 1964 laureate, declined this highly sought award. One other award winner, Boris Pasternak, had also declined it six years earlier. A book in the series Wadsworth Philosophers , by Haden Carruth, offers a wealth of information on Sartre, covering his life and works with brief explanations of his ideas. Carruth writes about Sartre’s rejection of the Nobel Prize: “When he learned that he was likely to be the recipient, he warned the Swedish Academy that he did not want the prize. When they chose him anyway, he refused to accept it and the 26 million francs that went with it. He refused the prize because he did not want to be bought off, or even appear to be bought off, by the middle-class establishment. He also noted that the Swedish Academy had never before offered this prize to a Marxist writer and the only Soviet writer to receive the prize was the dissident Boris Pasternak.”
