Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.

    The Dispossessed
    by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

    71. The Quest For Global Peace By Professor Joseph Rotblat
THE QUEST FOR GLOBAL PEACE. joseph rotblat. It era. Let me conclude mytalk by quoting myself, the last paragraph of my nobel lecture
    http://www.lasg.org/TheQuestforGlobalPeace.htm
    THE QUEST FOR GLOBAL PEACE
    Joseph Rotblat
It is a peculiar experience for me to speak in Los Alamos after nearly 60 years.  It is not a feeling of déjà vu , because in my first sojourn here there was no public to address; everything was under military regime and top secret.  Nor do I have a feeling of nostalgia, because – except for the beautiful scenery – I was very unhappy working on the Manhattan Project, and I escaped from it as soon as the situation justified it.  I find this experience peculiar because of the topic of my talk “The Quest for Global Peace”.  I am sure that all of us desire global peace, but while I believe that global peace demands the elimination of nuclear weapons, much of the basic philosophy of the establishment here is that global peace requires the existence of nuclear weapons.  I hope that I can persuade you to my point of view. My emphasis is on global peace, because peace is indivisible; you cannot have peace in one part of the globe while war is raging in another part; just as the tragic episodes of 11 th September have reminded us that “No man is an island”, that no country can isolate itself from all the others.  We live in a world of an ever-increasing interdependence of all its inhabitants and this is making us all like one family.  Globalization – whether in its positive or negative aspects – has brought about a situation whereby events in any part of the globe affect us all: in economic, cultural, societal, or political issues.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

"We have selected this gentleman primarily because, while he has been a prominent figure in the nuclear weapons debate, he really earned his Nobel Peace Prize for encouraging student activism," said Nicholas Tyszka, Conference Chair. This year's conference is the largest in University history to be entirely student run. It is also the first student run conference to bring in a Nobel Price winner. "The presence of such a distinguished individual like Joseph Rotblat shows that this conference is an important venue in American higher education for discussing some very serious issues that affect us all," said Tyszka. The conference will begin Friday night with Rotblat's address entitled "Averting Nuclear Anarchy: The Current Crisis in Arms Control," in the Jordan Auditorium at 7 p.m. and will continue on Saturday with a series of roundtable discusssions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BOSTON, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ One of the early architects of the atom bomb and a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his later opposition to the weapon calls for international controls on scientific research in an exclusive commentary on today's edition of the public radio news magazine The World. Responding to recent headlines trumpeting the successful cloning of a sheep by British scientists, Nobel Laureate Joseph Rotblat warns of the dangers of such "spectacular and frightening" research in a commentary to be broadcast on the national news program this afternoon (CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS). "A control on science is almost a contradiction in terms," Rotblat says. "However, the potential cataclysmic consequences of scientific research make it imperative to impose some limitations." Rotblat compares the potentially harmful ramifications of unbridled genetic research to the superdestructive weapons that resulted from atomic research, and calls for the establishment of international ethical committees to provide some oversight. "There will be tremendous opposition from the scientific community..." Rotblat says. "But every scientist is first of all a citizen, and the interest of the world community must be paramount."

Speech addressing the Summit of the Nobel Laureates in Rome
    October 19, 2002
    About the Speaker
Joseph Rotblat, born in Poland in 1908, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995. He shared the prize with the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, which he chairs, for "their efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in international politics and, in the longer run, to eliminate such arms." The Conferences are based on the recognition of the responsibility fo scientists for their inventions, and the catastrophic consequences of some of our new weapons.
Dr. Rotblat worked on the development of the atom bomb, and was one of the scientists to walk off of the Manhattan Project in protest. In 1955, he was one of eleven leading scientists invited to be signatories on the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, a resolution drafted by Bertrand Russel and Albert Einstein calling on world leaders of the time to peacefully resolve conflicts and avoid a nuclear war that would have disastrous effects for mankind. (for full manifesto click here ). The manifesto has been said to have been the founding document of the peace movement. It certainly formed the foundation of thought for the Pugwash Conferences.

    Pugwash's Awards
Despite its reserved nature, the Pugwash Conferences have received many international awards:
In 1987 they were awarded the Olimpia Prize by the Onassis Foundation ( US$ 100,000 shared with the Archeological Society of Greece), and the Feltrinelli Prize by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei ( Lit. 100.000.000 awarded every four years for work having a high moral and humanitarian value ). This money was placed in the Interanational Pugwash Foundation (located in Geneva, and on whose Administrative Board both Robert mcNamara, ex-U.S. Secretary of Defense and later President of the World Bank, and Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan take part), which was set up with the goal (still far off) of raising US$ 5,000,000 as a financial base.
In 1989, UNESCO awarded to the Pugwash Conferences the Einstein Gold Metal . In 1992, The Albert Einstein Peace Prize was awarded to Hans Bethe and Joseph Rotblat, who donated his half to the Pugwash Foundation.
    1995 Nobel Peace Prize Winners!
In 1995 the Nobel Peace Prize (which entail a monetary award of 7,200,000 SEK, approximately one million US$) was assigned, in two equal parts, to Joseph Rotblat, President of Pugwash, and to the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. Joseph Rotblat has donated his half of the Prize to Pugwash (one-third to International Pugwash, one-third to British Pugwash, and one-third to a special Pugwash Trust that he is now setting up). The funds that have thus come to international Pugwash (two-thirds of the Nobel Peace Prize monies) have all gone to the Pugwash Foundation.
