Biogen Founders to Receive 2002 Biotechnology Heritage Award Walter Gilbert and Phillip Sharp Will Be Honored at the
BIO 2002 International Convention and Exhibition, Toronto
PHILADELPHIA, PA—June 3, 2002— The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) will present the 2002 Biotechnology Heritage Award to Walter Gilbert and Phillip A. Sharp. Sharp and Gilbert are among the founders of Biogen, a pioneer company in biotechnology. In addition to fostering Biogen, both men went on to win Nobel prizes. David E. Robinson, chairman, president and CEO of Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated will present the award at the plenary breakfast session of the BIO 2002 International Convention and Exhibition in Toronto on Wednesday, June 12. More than 2,000 are expected to attend the award presentation including current Biogen President and CEO James C. Mullen and other global leaders in biotechnology. “Biogen was one of the first companies to move biotechnology from the laboratory to the marketplace,” said Arnold Thackray, president of CHF. “Gilbert and Sharp are men of vision, seeing both the commercial possibilities in biotechnology and also advancing the frontiers of science.”

Many politicians of both parties, former government officials, Nobel laureates, scientists, foreign policy experts and newspapers have called on President Clinton not to deploy national missile defense. There are a variety of motivations: some are opposed to national missile defense, some prefer a different deployment plan that includes sea- and/or space-based interceptors, and some would like to see a decision made by President Bush, if he is elected, rather than President Clinton. All on this list have publicly called upon President Clinton to defer the deployment decision or not to deploy the current national missile defense plan. Former government officials: Harold Brown, Defense Secretary under President Carter Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser to President Carter Jimmy Carter, President Jonathan Dean, Ambassador John Deutch, C.I.A. Murray, M.D., Nobel Prize Winner 1990 Erwin NEHER and Bert SAKMANN - describe chemical communications between cells. Edmond H. FISCHER and Edwin G. KREBS - show cells can adapt pre-existing proteins for a job rather than make new ones from scratch. Richard J. ROBERTS and Philip A. SHARP - show how DNA and individual genes can relate differently in different circumstances. Alfred G. GILMAN and Martin RODBELL - show how individual cells interpret chemical signals, and separately how a chemical, guanosine triphosphate (GTP), enables us to see, smell and taste. Edward B. LEWIS, Christiane NUSSLEIN-VOLHARD and Prof. Eric E. WIESCHAUS – describe genetic control of early embryonic development.
