La questione è in realtà un po' più controversa di quanto si sia soliti immaginare: a parere di alcuni siamo vicini alla "fine della scienza", prossimi alla teoria del "tutto"; il mio, invece, è un punto di vista opposto. Credo, infatti, che ci troviamo all'inizio di una nuova epoca. La scienza classica poneva l'accento sulla stabilità, sull'equilibrio; ora, a tutti i livelli di osservazione, ci imbattiamo in fluttuazioni, biforcazioni, processi evolutivi. L'ideale classico consisteva in una visione geometrica della natura; ora vediamo che in essa giocano un ruolo essenziale elementi che possiamo definire "narrativi". Questo cambiamento radicale è avvenuto nella seconda metà di questo secolo. Il Diciannovesimo secolo ci ha lasciato un'eredità contraddittoria: da un lato, le "leggi di natura", deterministiche e reversibili nel tempo, nel senso che passato e futuro vi giocano lo stesso ruolo; dall'altro, la termodinamica, la scienza che introduce il concetto di entropia. Eighteen outstanding scientists of Russian descent have established, we may say, the level at which the scientific work of the Academy should be conducted. Taking into consideration the unique role of the Nobel family in the development of science and industry in Russia in the 19th-20th centuries, the Presidium of the Academy has established the commission "The Nobel Family in the History of Russia". The ceremonial meeting and the evening party organized by the Academy of Natural Sciences in the Column Hall of the House of Unions on May 21, 1992 to mark the 90th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes appeared to be an important event. The meeting the Chairman of which was the first President of the Academy D.A.Mineyev was attended by the Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation Michael Sulman (Stockholm), grand-nephew of Alfred Nobel - Sven Nobel - the head of the Nobel Family Association (Switzerland), Nobel Prize winners N.G.Basov, A.M.Prokhorov, M.S.Gorbachev, the Ambassadors of Sweden - K.Berner and of Norway -D.Stenset.
