Max Planck In 1874, at the age of 16, he entered the University of Munich. Before he began his studies he discussed the prospects of research in physics with Philipp von Jolly, the professor of physics there, and was told that physics was essentially a complete science with little prospect of further developments. Fortunately Planck decided to study physics despite the bleak future for research that was presented to him. In [7] Planck describes why he chose physics:- The outside world is something independent from man, something absolute, and the quest for the laws which apply to this absolute appeared to me as the most sublime scientific pursuit in life. Planck then studied at Berlin where his teachers included Helmholtz and Kirchhoff . He later wrote that he admired Kirchhoff greatly but found him dry and monotonous as a teacher. Planck returned to Munich and received his doctorate at the age of 21 with a thesis on the second law of thermodynamics. He was then appointed to a teaching post at the University of Munich in 1880 and he taught there until 1885.

Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, and willed his fortune to set up a foundation to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 and the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. The recipients are commonly referred to as the Nobel Laureates. On the occasion of its 300th anniversary in 1968, the Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) made a large donation to the Nobel Foundation to establish a prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. The first Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded in 1969. The Nobel Foundation CHEMISTRY

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Planck, Max Karl Ernst Ludwig German physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1918 for his formulation of the quantum theory in 1900. His research into the manner in which heated bodies radiate energy led him to report that energy is emitted only in indivisible amounts, called quanta, the magnitudes of which are proportional to the frequency of the radiation. His discovery ran counter to classical physics and is held to have marked the commencement of the modern science. Measurements of the frequency distribution of black-body radiation by Wilhelm Wien in 1893 showed the peak value of energy occurring at a higher frequency with greater temperature. This may be observed in the varying colour produced by a glowing object. At low temperatures, it glows red but as the temperature rises the peak energy is emitted at a greater frequency, and the colour become yellow and then white. HASH(0xb65106c) Planck's idea that energy must consist of indivisible particles, not waves, was revolutionary because it totally contravened the accepted belief that radiation consisted of waves. It soon found rapid acceptance Albert
