Donald J. Cram obtained his B.S. at Rollins College in 1941. He also obtained his M.S. in 1942 at the University of Nebraska, and became a research chemist there from 1942-1945. Then immediately after the war he attended Harvard University where he obtained his Ph.D. After obtaining his Ph.D., three months later he set out for the University of California at Los Angeles on August 1, 1947. While he was there, he was very prominent by contributing directly to the teaching of organic chemistry, and indirectly by writing three textbooks. He also expanded on the work of Charles J. Pedersen by synthesizing three-dimensional molecules that could mimic the functioning of natural molecules. In 1987 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry along with Pedersen and Jean-Marie Lehn. He also won the National Academy of Science Award in the Chemical Sciences, along with other numerous awards. Reference: The Nobel Foundation. Donald J. ADVANCES IN INCLUSION SCIENCE Volume 7
Reprinted from `JOURNAL OF INCLUSION PHENOMENA', 12: 1-4
This volume is dedicated to the memory of the late Charles J. Pedersen in recognition of his outstanding contribution to scientific research, culminating in his discovery of crown ethers and their remarkable cation complexing properties and his receipt of the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
The field of macrocyclic chemistry, to a large degree, had its beginnings with Professor Pedersen's discovery. A first-person account of this discovery is given as the first paper in this volume. The growth of the field since the first publication on the subject in 1967 has been enormous. Charles Pedersen lived to see much of this growth. He saw many of his own predictions of possible uses of crown ethers and related macrocycles realized. His work illustrates how one individual can make an enormous difference in science.
The effect of his life and work on those who contributed papers for this volume and on many others is appreciated and is acknowledged by several of the authors in their individual papers.

    Chemical Anniversaries 1997
What exciting events can be commemorated in 1997? Sugar from sugar beet, the first real photograph, and the discovery of chromium, nitrogen and oxygen, nitroglycerine and the electron can all be celebrated in 1997. Each year the first issue of Nature has an article on notable anniversaries by J.L. Heilbron and W.F.Bynum. In their introduction this year (2/1/97) they pick the electron as the star of 1997: "The anniversary of the year is the discovery in 1897 of the first elementary particle, of the bond between physics and chemistry, of the basis of computing, of that faithful and tireless servant of mankind - the electron"
Alchemia by Andreas Libavius (b. 1540, Germany) is one of the earliest chemical textbooks.
Georg Ernst Stahl (b. 22/10/1660, Germany) introduces the concept of phlogiston.
Andreas Marggraf (b. 3/3/1709, Germany) discovers sugar in sugar beet, launching an important industry and alternative to sugar cane.
Antoine Lavoisier begins to experiment on combustion.
