FROM FOOD TO FLESH: A NEW NOBEL FIELD
Author: By Dianne Dumanoski, Globe Staff Date: Thursday, October 15, 1987

NATIONAL/FOREIGN How does the stomach take a tuna fish sandwich and start making it into bone, muscle and fingernails? How does the immune system recognize foreign bacteria and kick the body's defenses into action? Living things whether they are plants or animals, a single cell or an elephant depend on myriad subtle biochemical processes to maintain themselves. These processes, which are governed by large molecules or collections of atoms, have long fascinated scientists, said Julius Rebek, an organic chemist from the University of Pittsburgh. But, he said, it has been "hard to figure out how they operate because they are so complex." The three who were named recipients of the 1987 Nobel Prize for chemistry yesterday opened the door to understanding these processes, Rebek said, by creating much simpler artificial molecules in the laboratory that simulate or mimic reactions that take place in living systems. Rebek works in a closely related area of the field, which is called supramolecular chemistry.

LATEST NOBEL AFFIRMS MIT LEADERSHIP IN BIOLOGY
Author: By Anthony Flint, Globe Staff Date: Tuesday, October 12, 1993

METRO With the addition of Phillip A. Sharp to its roster of Nobel laureates, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has confirmed its superpower status in academia unquestionably now in biology, and not only in physics, chemistry and economics, where 19 of the past 24 awards have gone. MIT's grand total of two dozen Nobelists including current or former faculty and staff and alumni is one of the highest concentrations of any academic institution in the United States. There are seven Nobel laureates now on the faculty who won the prize while at MIT: Jerome I. Friedman (physics, 1990); Henry W. Kendall (physics, 1990); Robert M. Solow (economics, 1987); Susumu Tonegawa, (medicine/physiology, 1987); Franco Modigliani (economics, 1985); Samuel C.C. Ting (physics, 1976); and Paul A. Samuelson (economics, 1970). Har Gobind Khorana won the Nobel prize in medicine and physiology in 1968 and then came to MIT. David Baltimore won the prize in medicine and physiology in 1975 while at MIT, left the institute for a few years but is now returning.

Nobel Paths to Nanotechnology
What path will be followed to the first assemblers?
Several paths lead to nanotechnology, and work contributing to one or more of those paths has won several recent Nobel prizes. Even without the motive of building assemblers, practical and academic motives have moved technology in directions that bring assemblers closer.
Chemistry, 1987
The 1987 Nobel prize for chemistry went to Charles J. Pedersen Donald J. Cram , and Jean-Marie Lehn for developing relatively simple molecules that perform functions like those of natural proteins. Pederson synthesized what are known as "crown ethers," a family of molecules that selectively bind specific metal ions in solution, holding them in properly-sized internal hollows. Cram and Lehn have extended this work, using chemical techniques to synthesize a wide range of molecules that specifically bind other molecules. This sort of selective binding is a common protein function.
The molecular machinery of cells self-assembles though the selective binding of one protein to another. Other molecules that bind selectively to one another might likewise be used as a basis for molecular machinery, providing an alternative to proteins for building first-generation assemblers. The ongoing work of Cram, Lehn, and their coworkers may be of great importance to the development of nanotechnology.

    Early Citations Mark 1987 Nobel
By PETER GWYNNE PHILADELPHIA—Nobel prizes in science normally recognize research of extraordinary excellence, as judged by literature citations to it and awards that have accumulated over a period of years. This year, however, the Nobel committee awarded the physics prize for recent research that illuminated the physical science community with the brilliance of a supernova. New physics laureates J. Georg Bednorz and K. Alex Milller, of IBM’s Zurich Research Labora tory, published their seminal paper on high-temperature superconducting ceramics in September 1986 in the German journal Zeitschrift für Physik B : Condensed Matter (vol. 64, 1986, p.189). The paper had been cited once by year’s end, and just five times during the first two months of this year, according to data gathered by the Institute for Scientific Information, which publishes THE SCIENTIST. However, once the physics community recognized the extraordinary promise of high-temperature superconductors, the paper’s citations increased exponentially, from 29 in March and April to 82 in May and June to 140 in July and August (see chart below). It is a buildup of extraordinary rapidity, matched only by a relatively few papers reporting such dramatic findings as pulsars, elementary particles and the AIDS virus. The seminal papers recognized by the Nobel committee in chemistry and medicine or physiology show a more normal citation history.
