Lester Pearson dies in Ottawa
The Globe and Mail Thursday, December 28, 1972 - later dispatch Lester B. Pearson Ottawa (CP) - Lester Bowles Pearson, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 and Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, died in his Ottawa home last night. He was 75. The diplomat-politician, scholar and writer, succumbed to a spreading cancer that had caused the loss of his right eye two years ago. The easy-mannered leader known to friends as Mike since his athletic and studious boyhood, had lapsed into a coma yesterday and died at 11.40 p.m. His career was highlighted by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping to organize a United Nations peacekeeping force in the Middle East in 1956. That brittle peace lasted for about a decade, collapsing with renewed Arab-Israeli war in 1967 on the eve of Mr. Pearson's retirement from active politics. His years as Prime Minister, despite a lack of majority in the Commons, were marked by a succession of welfare measures such as national medical care insurance: recognition of Quebec's special place in Confederation; trial abolition of capital punishment, and - amid controversy- adoption of the Canadian flag instead of the old Red Ensign bearing the union Jack.

The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign
Pearson College is one of nine United World Colleges. It was founded as the national memorial to Lester Bowles Pearson, Canada's late Prime Minister and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The aim of the college is to demonstrate that education can be a force to unite rather than divide nations. The college promotes international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries are brought together in study, in recreation and in service to the community. Mr. Pearson had this to say: "Students will be welcomed without regard to race, religion or politics and we intend to establish scholarships so that the students who attend the College will be from all levels of society and will be genuine representatives of their own peoples. This system could become a revolutionary force in international education."
The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign
The goal of The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign is to award scholarships to eligible students from Ukraine to attend the Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific. The yearly tuition is $ 17,500. The Ukrainian Scholarship Campaign hopes to fund two students from Ukraine each year. This fund is managed by Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific and tax receipts are available to people or organizations who make a donation to the fund. If you wish to make a donation to the Ukrainian Scholarship fund, print out the form below, fill it out and send it the address indicated.

n the midst of the First World War, 20-year-old Lester Bowles Pearson agreed with his flight-school squadron commander that “Mike” was a much-improved moniker, and “Mike” he became, for the rest of his days. Born in 1897, the future prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize-winner enjoyed a charmed life of picnics and baseball until the outbreak of war in 1914. The previous year, Pearson had enrolled at Victoria College. Graduating after the war with a BA in history, he went to Oxford on a Massey Foundation fellowship, where he read modern history and played hockey and lacrosse for the university. “Herr Zigzag,” as the admiring Swiss dubbed him during a hockey tournament, emerged from Oxford with a coveted Blue in both sports. In 1923, Pearson returned to Canada to teach in U of T’s history department. He loved teaching, and his students thought him vibrant

Lansing, Michigan Thomas M. Cooley Law School, America's third largest law school, announces the creation of the Lester Bowles Pearson Canadian Bursary Program. The program is named in honor of the former Prime Minister of Canada who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. Mr. Pearson, who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Oxford University, was Prime Minister when the Canada-United States Automotive Agreement was implemented, a significant step in the economic relationship between the two countries. Through the Pearson Program, scholarships are available to qualified Canadian citizens who demonstrate academic competence, good potential for law study, good moral character, a strong desire for an American legal education, and financial need. Implementation of the Program is scheduled for September, 2001. "Canada and the United States share more than a common border," President Thomas E. Brennan said. "We share a common heritage, a common law, a commitment to constitutional democracy and a republican form of government, a free enterprise economic system, and a huge international commercial trade. The Bursary Program recognizes those ties." "One of the purposes of the recently adopted North American Free Trade Agreement is to reduce barriers between our two countries. Because we do not have a common currency, the difference in value of the Canadian and American dollars constitutes a substantial obstacle to Canadians who wish to obtain an American legal education. The Pearson Scholarships are Cooley's response to the call of our federal government to open the markets in the two countries," President Brennan continued. "The Lester Pearson Bursary Program scholarships are designed to recognize the relative strength of the dollars in the two economies."

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations (U.N.) and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilization aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges.
Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the U.N. As Secretary-General, he has been pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization. While clearly underlining the U.N.'s traditional responsibility for peace and security, he has also emphasized its obligations with regard to human rights. He has risen to such new challenges as HIV/AIDS and international terrorism, and brought about more efficient utilization of the U.N.'s modest resources. In an organization that can hardly become more than its members permit, he has made clear that sovereignty can not be a shield behind which member states conceal their violations.
