Washington Post as "one of our foremost cultural critics" and by the New York Times Stavans reflects on Paz's personal struggle with Marxism and surrealism, his reflections on pachucos, his analysis of love and eroticism, his study of the life and legacy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and his influence as a magazine editor. But this extraordinary rumination is not only a thought-provoking appraisal of Paz; it is also a feast for the myriad admirers of Stavans, himself a spirited, mordant essayist who is not afraid of controversy. Octavio Paz: A Meditation is a fitting addition to Stavans’s own oeuvre that will stimulate discerning readers. ABOUT THE BOOK
Understanding Octavio Paz provides thorough readings of Paz's poetry, essays, and autobiographical works within their historical, political, and aesthetic contexts. Quiroga begins his analysis by setting out the broad outlines of Paz's life, which he examines in greater detail throughout the book. Scrutinizing Paz's most important collection of poetry, Libertad bajo palabra , Quiroga takes into account the series of revisions to which Paz submitted his poetic works. In readings regarding society and politics, he focuses on The Labyrinth of Solitude, which has grown to include Paz's last observations on Mexico and the Mexican state. Quiroga also examines Paz's work on aesthetics and poetics, with chapters devoted to poetry and works published before and after the poet's stay in India during the 1960s; and Paz's longer poems written in the 1970s and 1980s. From aesthetics to politics, from art to society, from art criticism to anthropology, Paz continually reread himself.

Nobel laureate sheds insight on India today
By PREETI SINGH IN LIGHT OF INDIA. By Octavio Paz. Translated by Eliot Weinberger. Harcourt Brace, $22. "HOW does a Mexican writer, at the end of the 20th century, view the immense reality of India?" The question is posed by Nobel laureate Octavio Paz and falls in line with others of its kind that are being asked this year as India celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence. It is a big question. In In the Light of India, Paz has written a "small" but heavy-duty book in an attempt to answer it. Eight years later he stumbled upon the 20 pages of that lecture, "realized their inadequacy," and decided to rework what he had observed about India. These observations are neither "memoirs nor evocations" but "a small essay" that attempts to go beyond the level of personal anecdote. In Light of India is "not for the experts," he writes. "It is the child not of knowledge but of love." In Spanish, his observations about India are titled Vislumbres de la India , which translates loosely as glimpses, dimly seen, as in twilight visions. His intellectual grasp of India is as large as the subcontinent itself and moves assuredly through the poetry, philosophy and history of the ancient civilization.

Octavio Paz was the first Mexican citizen to win the Nobel Prize for literature, but in many ways his life and work embraced a profundity that transcended geography, politics, or awards. Paz's acute sensitivity and mature relationship with the world were forged in the smithy of experience. As a reporter, ambassador, essayist, poet, and thinker (in the uncompromising classical sense) he endeavored to see our world freed from its veil. Paz, a devoted student of the Enlightenment, witnessed and commented on modernity - faults and all.
see ." The first essay comments on his reasons for contemplating Mexico's place on the world stage and serves to introduce themes that are dealt with in much greater detail in the second essay, "Itinerary." Among the most engaging of Paz's themes are the role of literature; the political, historical and philosophical implications of revolutions; the false dreams and legacies of communism; and the rarely examined complexity of sustaining democracies. Individually, such topics might seem the subject of doctoral dissertations, but Paz seamlessly weaves them together with the economy and precision of a poet.
The second essay concentrates the arguments of the first and, like many of the Platonic dialogues, poses as many questions as it answers. Based on the premise that revolution is an undeniable characteristic of the modern age, Paz endeavors to make sense of historical change. He begins with the Greeks, the inventors of democracy, who viewed change with suspicion, even horror. In general, ancient societies embraced the absolute - whether an archetypal past or an anthropomorphic divinity - and scorned relativism. The deliberate religiousness of Paz's analysis dovetails neatly with his next premise - that revolution in the modern age has been used as a proxy for religion

    Octavio Paz
