Octavio Paz Paz nació en la ciudad de México el 31 de marzo de 1914. Hijo de una española y de un abogado mexicano con sangre india, desde su juventud sintió su personalidad como un crisol de culturas. Tras cursar sus estudios universitarios, decidió dedicarse a la literatura y en 1931 fundó la revista Barandal. Dos años después publicó su primer poemario, Luna silvestre. En 1937 Paz marchó a España para apoyar al gobierno republicano en la guerra civil y se unió a la alianza de escritores antifascistas. Tras un viaje a París, donde trató a los surrealistas, regresó a México e inició una intensa actividad cultural traducida en la fundación de las revistas Taller (1939) y El Hijo Pródigo (1943) y en la creación de grupos artísticos y teatrales. Ello no le impidió desarrollar su obra poética, con títulos como A la orilla del mundo (1942), los poemas en prosa de ¿Águila o sol? (1951) y La estación violenta (1958), mundo deslumbrante y telúrico, identificado con el espíritu del autor y expresado en un lenguaje de gran violencia expresiva, que debía tanto al surrealismo como a la mitología azteca. Éstas y otras obras fueron recogidas en 1960 en Libertad bajo palabra y, junto con el ensayo El laberinto de la soledad (1950), conformaron una reflexión sobre las raíces espirituales mexicanas. Tras publicar Salamandra (1962), uno de sus textos más surrealistas, Paz residió entre 1962 y 1968 en la India como embajador de su país. Durante este período experimentó un gran interés por el pensamiento oriental y las relaciones entre palabra e imagen. My classics are those of my language and I consider myself to be a descendant of Lope and Quevedo, as any Spanish writer would ... yet I am not a Spaniard. I think that most writers of Spanish America, as well as those from the United States, Brazil and Canada, would say the same as regards the English, Portuguese and French traditions. To understand more clearly the special position of writers in the Americas, we should think of the dialogue maintained by Japanese, Chinese or Arabic writers with the different literatures of Europe. It is a dialogue that cuts across multiple languages and civilizations. Our dialogue, on the other hand, takes place within the same language. We are Europeans yet we are not Europeans. What are we then? It is diffcult to define what we are, but our works speak for us. character? Do they possess a set of shared features that distinguish them from other literatures? I doubt it. A literature is not defined by some fanciful, intangible character; it is a society of unique works united by relations of opposition and a nity. Hispanic eccentricity is reproduced and multiplied in America, especially in those countries such as Mexico and Peru, where ancient and splendid civilizations had existed. In Mexico, the Spaniards encountered history as well as geography. That history is still alive: it is a present rather than a past. The temples and gods of pre-Columbian Mexico are a pile of ruins, but the spirit that breathed life into that world has not disappeared; it speaks to us in the hermetic language of myth, legend, forms of social coexistence, popular art, customs. Being a Mexican writer means listening to the voice of that present, that presence. Listening to it, speaking with it, deciphering it: expressing it ... After this brief digression we may be able to perceive the peculiar relation that simultaneously binds us to and separates us from the European tradition.

Octavio Paz was born in 1914 in Mexico City. On his father's side, his grandfather was a prominent liberal intellectual and one of the first authors to write a novel with an expressly Indian theme. Thanks to his grandfather's extensive library, Paz came into early contact with literature. Like his grandfather, his father was also an active political journalist who, together with other progressive intellectuals, joined the agrarian uprisings led by Emiliano Zapata. Paz began to write at an early age, and in 1937, he travelled to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the Second International Congress of Anti-Fascist Writers. Upon his return to Mexico in 1938, he became one of the founders of the journal, Taller (Workshop), a magazine which signaled the emergence of a new generation of writers in Mexico as well as a new literary sensibility. In 1943, he travelled to the USA on a Guggenheim Fellowship where he became immersed in Anglo-American Modernist poetry; two years later, he entered the Mexican diplomatic service and was sent to France, where he wrote his fundamental study of Mexican identity, The Labyrinth of Solitude

OCTAVIO PAZ: NOBEL WINNER AND NOBLE MAN 1998 witnessed the passing of such diverse figures as Frank Sinatra, legendary boxer Archie Moore, two-term Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, cowboy star and entrepreneur Gene Autry, and Clayton ("Peg Leg") Bates, the one-legged tap dancer who was so skilled with a wooden limb that he forged a career (including twenty appearances on the Ed Sullivan show) that lasted from the 1920s to 1989. It also witnessed the passing of Octavio Paz, the protean Mexican writer who won the Nobel Prize in 1990 and who was as noted for ideological integrity as for literary talent. In 1968, after the student massacre at Tlatelolco, Paz angrily resigned as Mexican ambassador to India. Paz was born in Mexico City on March 31, 1914. His father, Octavio Paz Solórzano, was a lawyer who supported Zapata during the Mexican Revolution and made notable contributions in the area of agrarian reform. His grandfather, Ireneo Paz, was a journalist during Porfirian times who rallied to the standard of Madero. Intellectually precocious and having access to his grandfather's extensive library, Paz was a voracious reader his entire life. After studies in Mexico, he received a scholarship to study Hispanic poetry in the United States.

He was educated at the National University of Mexico in law and literature. Under the encouragement of Pablo Neruda , Paz began his poetic career in his teens by founding an avant-garde literary magazine, Barandal, and publishing his first book of poems, Luna silvestre (1933). In his youth, Paz spent time in the United States and Spain, where he was influenced by the modernist and surrealist movements. His sequence of prose poems, Aguila o sol? Eagle or Sun?, 1951) is a visionary mapping of Mexico, its past, present, and future, and Piedra de Sol Sun Stone, 1957) borrows its structure from the Aztec calendar. This long poem, and Paz's sociocultural analysis of Mexico, El laberinto de la soledad The Labyrinth of Solitude, 1950), established him as a major literary figure in the 1950s. In 1962, he became Mexico's ambassador to India and resigned six years later in protest when government forces massacred student demonstrators in Mexico City. His later work shows an ever-deepening intelligence and complexity as it investigates the intersection of philosophy, religion, art, politics, and the role of the individual. "Wouldn't it be better to turn life into poetry rather than to make poetry from life," Paz asks. "And cannot poetry have as its primary objective, rather than the creation of poems, the creation of poetic moments?" His various collections of essays engage culture, linguistics, literary theory, history, and politics with a level of originality and erudition that is unrivaled; these and his poems form a breadth of work that expresses, in the words of Carlos Fuentes, "the existence of a plurality of possibilities for harmony and truth, outside the limited range of our inherited dogmas." He was awarded the Cervantes Award in 1981, the Neustadt Prize in 1982, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. Paz died in 1998.

Paz, Octavio Octavio Paz shortly after receiving his Nobel Prize, 1990 (b. March 31, 1914, Mexico City, Mex.d. April 19, 1998, Mexico City), Mexican poet, writer, and diplomat, recognized as one of the major literary figures in Latin America after World War II. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. Paz's family was ruined financially by the Mexican Civil War, and Octavio grew up in straitened circumstances. He was educated at a Roman Catholic school and at the University of Mexico. He turned to writing and published his first book of poetry, Luna silvestre ("Forest Moon"), in 1933 at age 19. Paz visited Spain in 1937, where he identified strongly with the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. He wrote his reflections on that experience in Bajo tu clara sombra y otros poemas ("Beneath Your Clear Shadow and Other Poems"), which, published in Spain in 1937, identified him as a young writer of real promise. Before returning home he visited Paris, where Surrealism exerted a profound influence on him. Back in Mexico, Paz founded and edited several important literary reviews, including

Non-Stop New York's Salute April, once called "the cruelest month" by poet T.S. Eliot, became "National Poetry Month" in the United States in 1996. It's wonderful that poets have come from all over the world to read their prize-winning poems in New York City. More poets, however, deserve a wider audience. Talented women have long been under-represented in the poetry world and, with few exceptions, have certainly been kept out of the top prize-winning circles. Certain ethnic groups, too, are visibly under-represented in the published poetry world. And more funding must be dedicated to elementary school education, and inner-city children must be exposed to poets and poetry, for these are the voices of America's future. The world will be different because new poets can or cannot make themselves heard. The Mexican Cultural Institute and the Americas Society offered a reception to welcome Octavio Paz in New York and to celebrate with him the recent publication of three extraordinary books: the English translation of La Llama Doble, the facsimile edition of Blanco, and the limited edition of twelve Mexican poems (illustrated with twelve etchings by Enrique Chagoya) taken from the Paz's famous anthology, translated by Samuel Beckett.
