Paul, Wolfgang
(b. Aug. 10, 1913, Lorenzkirch, Ger.d. Dec. 6/7, 1993, Bonn), German physicist who shared one-half of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1989 with the German-born American physicist Hans G. Dehmelt . (The other half of the prize was awarded to the American physicist Norman F. Ramsey .) Paul received his share of the prize for his development of the Paul trapan electromagnetic device that captures ions (electrically charged atoms) and holds them long enough for their properties to be accurately measured. The Paul trap, which he developed in the 1950s, used a radio-frequency current to maintain an alternating electric field that isolates and confines charged particles and atoms in a small space. The Paul trap allowed physicists to study atomic properties and test physical theories with high degrees of precision and became an important tool in modern spectroscopy. Paul also invented a way of separating ions of different masses and storing them in the Paul trap, using a principle that was subsequently widely applied in modern spectrometers.

Facts and Statistics about the Wolfgang Paul Award

Who's Who: "Who was Wolfgang Paul"

Set at two million DM, the Nobel Foundation currently awards the most famous academic prize in the world. But not the most valuable one: only this year the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is awarding the Wolfgang Paul Award, a unique award of up to 4.5 mill. DM to 14 top-rank scientists and scholars from abroad - and offering them first-rate conditions for research at German research institutes.
The award has been donated by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF); the funds come from the Federal Government’s Investment in the Future Programme (ZIP). The award will be handed over by the Federal Minister for Education and Research, Edelgard Bulmahn, at an award ceremony in Berlin on 6 November. „We are giving this award in honour of academic achievement at an internationally excellent level", Professor Wolfgang Frühwald, President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, explained. Altogether 70 researchers from 23 countries were nominated for the Wolfgang Paul Award by German research institutes.

Wolfgang Paul
As the third President of the Foundation, Wolfgang Paul, a pioneer in the field of particle physics, consistently supported the principle of "quality before quantity" and the intensification of worldwide contacts with the Humboldt family. He took a special interest in the development of the Feodor Lynen Programme for young German researchers and the extension of the Humboldt Research Award Programme to include humanities. Wolfgang Paul was born in Lorenzkirch, Saxony, in 1913 and died in Bonn in 1993. He studied in Munich and Berlin and qualified as post-doctoral lecturer in Kiel in 1944. Apart from being Professor and Director of the Institute of Physics at Bonn University from 1952 on, he assumed leading functions at the CERN in Geneva and the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg. For the development of the "Paul trap", with which it is possible to capture atomic nuclei, he and Hans G. Dehmelt and Norman F. Ramsey jointly won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1989. He donated a considerable part of the cash award accompanying his Nobel Prize to the Wolfgang Paul Foundation administered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Is it possible to confine atomic particles in a trap without material walls?
The long observation time of unperturbed single atoms at the emission of light allows high precision for frequency measurements and consequently the construction of clocks of which we could not dream before. Measurements of time with deviations of 1 part in 10
