Highlights for December 10 1901 FIRST NOBEL PRIZES: The first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace. The ceremony came on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite and other high explosives. In his will, Nobel directed that the bulk of his vast fortune be placed in a fund in which the interest would be "annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." Although Nobel offered no public reason for his creation of the prizes, it is widely believed that he did so out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm in 1833, and four years later his family moved to Russia. His father ran a successful St. Petersburg factory that built explosive mines and other military equipment. Educated in Russia, Paris, and the United States, Alfred Nobel proved a brilliant chemist. When his father's business faltered after the end of the Crimean War, Nobel returned to Sweden and set up a laboratory to experiment with explosives. In 1863, he invented a way to control the detonation of nitroglycerin, a highly volatile liquid that had been recently discovered but was previously regarded as too dangerous for use. Two years later, Nobel invented the blasting cap, an improved detonator that inaugurated the modern use of high explosives. Previously, the most dependable explosive was black powder, a form of gunpowder.

ForThisLand Annan Accepts Nobel Peace Prize as War Rages Monday, December 10, 2001 Reuters News Agency Oslo — UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on Monday even though he has said it is "almost indecent" to celebrate peace in the shadow of conflicts raging from Afghanistan to the Middle East. Mr. Annan collected the centenary prize with South Korean Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo, the president of the United Nations General Assembly, at a glittering ceremony in a tightly guarded Oslo City Hall. Mr. Annan and the United Nations as an institution share the prize, named after its founder Alfred Nobel of Sweden and first awarded in 1901. It comprises a gold medal, diploma and a cheque for 10-million Swedish crowns, about $950,000 (U.S.). Many former laureates attended the ceremony, 100 years after the first award went to Henri Dunant, the Swiss founder of the Red Cross, and French peace campaigner Frederic Passy. The five-member prize committee, which has given more than a dozen prizes to UN agencies and officials since the organisation was founded after the Second World War, has said the 2001 award honours work "for a better organized and more peaceful world."

The United States officially recognized the republic of Panama on November the 6th.

NEWS SPORT LOCAL NEWS ... OTHER NEWS TP On Tuesday: Why real peace can be the only presence of justice
In a world torn and scarred by conflict, we prize peace highly, though securing it - as we know only too well in this country - can be awfully difficult at times.
The effort required to end war or to put in place conditions preventing either its outbreak or prolongation, can be immense and can require qualities and characteristics out of the ordinary.
This was, undoubtedly, one of the factors that influenced Alfred Bernhard Nobel (1833-96), the Swedish chemist, engineer and philanthropist when he made his bequest for the foundation of the Nobel prizes 100 years ago.
It is for the Nobel Peace Prize in particular that the Swede is remembered, though there is more than a little oddity here, given that he made much of his fortune from his invention of dynamite in
The destructive power of dynamite added to the horrors of war.
Was it a guilty conscience that prompted Nobel to set aside money for an international peace prize?
In any event, we have him to thank for the much-coveted Peace Prize, which bestows worthy recognition on those we have come to know as the peacemakers.
