THE MULTINATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR CARL VON OSSIETZKY By Irwin Abrams A paper presented at the International Conference on Peace Movements in National Societies, 1919-1939, held in Stadtschlaining, Austria, September 25-29, 1991 Introduction When Carl von Ossietzky, the anti-militarist journalist whom the Nazis had thrown into a concentration camp, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936, Heinrich Mann wrote, "in one moment the conscience of the world arose, and the name which it spoke was his." Mann was referring to the international campaign in support of awarding him the prize in which some of the leading figures in the intellectual and political life of the time took part. The Ossietzky prize was one bright moment in the dark days preceding the outbreak of World War II, when the forces for peace and freedom in large sections of the world seemed about to be overwhelmed by ever more powerful forces of totalitarianism and reaction. In 1936 Nazi Germany was rearming in violation of the Versailles Treaty and in March reoccupied the Rhineland. In the same year Hitler formed the Rome-Berlin axis with Mussolini, who was completing the conquest of Ethiopia, began to aid the rebel generals who were marching to overthrow the Spanish Republic, and entered an agreement with Japan. In the summer of 1936 the Olympic Games in Berlin provided Goebbels with the opportunity to mount a great propaganda show of the "New Germany." Many abroad were dismissing the grim reports of concentration camp atrocities as exaggerated, and statesmen treated them as domestic affairs of no concern to other states.

SENDING A MESSAGE WITH THE PEACE PRIZE By Donald McNeil Jr. Excerpted from the New York Times , October 13, 2002
Guess who never won the Nobel Peace Prize. Mahatma Gandhi. Yes, that Mahatma Gandhi, the symbol of nonviolent pacifism. He was a serious candidate for only one year, and didn't win. Jimmy Carter was luckier. To take the prize last week, he was re-nominated virtually every year since 1978, when he brokered the Camp David accord between Egypt's Anwar el-Sadat and Israel's Menachem Begin. [...]
In itself, the award to Mr. Carter, who has spent his long non-retirement doing everything from building houses for the poor to overseeing elections in Liberia and a ceasefire in Bosnia, was for lifetime achievement. The jolt was that his award came with a surprisingly naked bit of tooth-baring by the peace prize committee. The five-member panel, which in accordance with Alfred Nobel's will is the only one not seated in Sweden but picked by Norway's Parliament, is usually secretive. But its citation of Mr. Carter had a barely veiled reference to President Bush's aggressive diplomacy toward Iraq, adding a clause: "In a situation currently marked by threats of the use of power, Mr. Carter. . ." [...] "This is quite amazing," said Irwin Abrams, a professor emeritus of history at Antioch College who just published a history of the Nobel Prizes and has interviewed members of many Nobel committees. "I can't remember anything like this happening in Oslo."

Alfred Nobel

Oct. 3, 1889, Hamburg, Ger.d. May 4, 1938, Berlin), German journalist and pacifist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace for 1935. In 1912 Ossietzky joined the German Peace Society but was conscripted into the army and served throughout World War I. In 1920 he became the society's secretary in Berlin. Ossietzky helped to found the Nie Wieder Krieg (No More War) organization in 1922 and became editor of the a liberal political weekly, in 1927, where in a series of articles he unmasked the Reichswehr leaders' secret preparations for rearmament. Accused of treason, Ossietzky was sentenced in November 1931 to 18 months' imprisonment but was granted amnesty in December 1932. When Adolf Hitler became chancellor, Ossietzky had resumed his editorship. Steadfastly refusing to flee Germany, he was arrested on Feb. 28, 1933, and sent to Papenburg concentration camp. He was transferred in May 1936 to a prison hospital and then to a private hospital, where he died of tuberculosis. On Nov. 24, 1936, Ossietzky was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for 1935. The award was interpreted as an expression of worldwide censure of Nazism. Hitler's reply was a decree forbidding Germans to accept any Nobel Prize.

The main characteristic of the university is its openness to new ways . Environmental and energy research are outstanding interdisciplinary areas of specialization. In July 1987, the involvement in marine research at the faculty of Marine Environmental Sciences led to the founding of the interdisciplinary Institute for Marine Chemistry and Biology ICBM ). In addition, the Landscape Ecology diploma program (1993), and the Jewish Studies Master's Program (1996), have been integrated into the university program. Another important project is the Regenerative Energies program, which is intended for graduate scientists and engineers from so-called Third World countries. The installation of
