Lars Onsager , the son of a barrister, was born in Oslo, Norway , on 27th November, 1903. He graduated from Norwegian Institute of Technology (1926-28) before studying with Peter Debye at Zurich University. Over the next few years Onsager developed his theory of electrolytes.
In 1928 Onsager moved to the United States where he studied at John Hopkins University and Brown University. His thesis on reversible processes was considered incomprehensible by the chemistry, physics and mathematics departments at Brown University before Onsager finally got his PhD.
In 1933 Onsager moved to Harvard University but his lectures were unpopular with students who named his courses as "Stadistical Mechanics" and "Advanced Norwegian". His research was much more successful and he eventually found a firm statistical basis for the theory of liquid crystals. Onsager, who became a naturalized American citizen in 1945, won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1968. Lars Onsager died in 1976.

George B. Kauffman Department of Chemistry, California State University, Fresno, Fresno, CA 93740-8034 Published online: 27 July 2001 Abstract. The Norwegian-born theoretical chemist–physicist Lars Onsager (1903–1976) received the 1968 Nobel Prize for Chemistry “for the discovery of the reciprocal relations bearing his name, which are fundamental for the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.” A recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees, which he did not receive until relatively late in life, he taught at the Johns Hopkins and Brown u,niversities, but spent most of his academic career at Yale University (1933–1972). He spent his post-retirement years (1972–1976) as Distinguished University Professor at the University of Miami’s Center for Theoretical Studies, where he continued his work with several postdoctoral research fellows. Every Donnelly Has his Day....
The Ninth Couette-Taylor Workshop, held in Boulder, Colorado August 8-10, kicked off its proceedings with a special event dubbed "Donnelly Day," in honor of Russell J. Donnelly of the University of Oregon. A former editor of Physical Review and former long-term officer of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics, Donnelly, 65, was honored for his significant contributions both to physics research and to the physics enterprise in general through his diverse volunteer activities. Speakers at the honorary session included Donnelly's first two Ph.D. students and Carlo Barenghi, a former student now teaching applied mathematics at Newcastle upon Tyne in England, who (with Chris Jones) finally solved the problem of the stability of superfluid helium between concentric cylinders, first addressed by Donnelly in 1957. Other speakers included leading theorist Fritz Busse (Bayreuth, Germany); Martin Golubitsky (University of Texas, Houston), an applied mathematician specializing in pattern-formation studies; and Katepalli Sreenivasan (Yale University) and Charles Van Atta (University of California, San Diego), experimentalists specializing in turbulent flows. In addition, Carl Wiemann of the University of Colorado reported on his group's recent landmark experiment demonstrating Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute rubidium gas. Other sessions held on subsequent days featured such topics as bifurcations and instabilities; turbulence; particle transport and kinematics; patterns and dynamics; geophysical and swirling flows; instability in noncylindrical geometries; and two-phase and compressible flow.

Lars Onsager: "Biographical Memoirs"
An essay prepared for the National Academy of Sciences is presented on the website of Yale University. (Onsager served as a professor at Yale from 1933-1972.) Authored by H. Christopher Longuet-Higgins and Michael E. Fisher, portions will be unfathomable to those not versed in physics. For example: "The non-equilibrium state itself would be represented by an ensemble that maximized the entropy S subject to the [alpha particle]i having specified values; the 'forces' conjugate to the [alpha particle]i would be the partial derivatives of S with respect to the displacements...." The article is, however, quite well written, and worth reading even by those who will skip over the technical portions. It captures the essence of this man of extraordinary scientific accomplishment who, typically of Norwegians, eschewed pomposity. It tells of his wit, his humor, and his outlook. This version lacks equations and illustrations. The full version appears, along with articles on other deceased members of the academy, on the website of the Universal Library Project, located at Carnegie Mellon University. It's slow to load, starting as it does on Page 183. The text will appear well in advance of the graphics.

Lars Onsagers arkiv Biographical note In 1968 Onsager was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for his fundamental contributions to irreversible thermodynamics. The so-called Onsager reciprocal relations that he derived have been of tremendous importance in a wide range of applications. In addition to the theory of irreversible processes, Onsager did pioneer work in several other fields of chemistry and physics. The first articles he published concerned the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrolytes, topics to which he made important contributions throughout his scientific career. In 1944 he baffled the scientific world with the exact solution of the two-dimensional Ising model, a model of a ferromagnet. The solution was a virtuosic mathematical feat. It was also important from a physical point of view, and started a development that led to a deeper understanding of phase transitions and critical points. From about 1940 Onsager was very interested in low-temperature physics. He suggested the quantization of vortices in liquid helium, and showed in 1952 how information about the distribution of electrons could be extracted from the de Haas-van Alphen effect.
