OLAH HYDROCARBONS AND THEIR CHEMISTRY 1999 ROBBINS LECTURER FEBRUARY 23, 24, 25, 26 POMONA COLLEGE Born and educated in Hungary, Professor Olah received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Technical University in Budapest, where he stayed as a professor of chemistry until 1956. Following the unsuccessful Hungarian uprising, Olah escaped and started anew in the United States, first as a Senior Research Scientist at Dow Chemical (1957-64) and then as a professor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University (1965-1977). Since 1977 he has been Director of the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute and Distinguished Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. In 1994, Professor Olah was the sole recipient of the Nobel Prize in chemistry for recognition of his pioneering work in the chemistry of the most fundamental of organic compounds, the hydrocarbons. George A. Olah was born in Budapest, Hungary on May 22, 1927. His education also occurred in Hungary at The Technical University of Budapest. In 1957, Olah left Budapest, making his way to America where he went to work for Dow Chemicals. While at Dow, he made his most significant contribution to man-kind, which lead to a Nobel Prize. He was able to create stable positively charged hydrocarbons which are called carbocations. The significance of this discovery is that these carbocations will react with normally weakly reactive alkane chains. This discovery makes it possible to remove the poisonous lead from gasoline. Currently Olah is a professor at University of Southern California. George A. Olah was named the 1994 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry “for his contributions to carbocation chemistry”(3). He discovered that through the use of Super acids carbocations could be suspended in high quantities and analyzed through modern testing. Olah was responsible for giving short-lived carbocations a long life. Olah was born in 1927 in Budapest, Hungary. He received a ph. D. degree at the Technical University in Budapest in 1949. Olah (From Les Prix Nobel 1994) After graduating from high school and having survived the ravages of war in Budapest and realizing the difficulties facing life in a small and war torn country, I started to study chemistry upon entering university, being attracted by the wide diversity it offered. Classes at the Technical University of Budapest were relatively small. We probably started with a class of 70 or 80, whose numbers were rapidly pared down during the first year to maybe half by rather demanding "do or die" oral examinations, where the ones who failed could not continue. This was a rather cruel process, because laboratory facilities were so limited that only few could be accommodated. At the same time the laboratory training was thorough. For example, in the organic laboratory we did some 40 Gatterman preparations. It certainly gave a solid foundation. Organic chemistry particularly intrigued me and I was fortunate later to become a research assistant to Professor Geza Zemplen, the senior professor of organic chemistry in Hungary, who himself was a student of Emil Fischer in Berlin. He established in Hungary a reputable school in organic chemistry. As Fischer, he too expected his students to pay their own way and even paying for the privilege to work in his laboratory. Becoming an assistant to him although meant no remuneration but also no fee. Zemplen had a formidable reputation, and working for him was quite an experience. He also liked partying and these remarkable events in neighboring pubs lasted frequently for days. Certainly one's stamina developed through these experiences.

The Seaborg prize is awarded to two winners from the fair. The prize is an all expenses paid, week long trip to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. The trip to Stockholm is a part of the SIYSS program, which is held each year. Twenty-five young scientists are chosen from around the world to participate in the week-long event.
