Review Summary "Alva Reimer Myrdal, "born on a farm near the provincial Swedish town of Ekilstuna was a girl who ached to study and read and travel but found all avenues blocked", because of her sex. How she overcame this first barrier and obtained an education is only one of the many challenges described in this loving biography by her daughter Sissela, one of three children born to Alva and Gunnar Myrdal. Alva's marriage to Gunnar at first was realization of a dream, as she became his literary helpmate and sounding board while he wrote the Nobel prize winning study,"An American Dilemma", published in NY in 1944. Alva soon moved on to publishing two books of her own,"Nation and Family, in 1941,and Womens' Two Roles, in 1956. But it was for "The Game of Disarmament", published in '1976, that Alva herself was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982 at the age of eighty."

Reviewed by Bill McCarron , Department of Literature and Languages, East Texas State University, Commerce Late in Kent Nelson's bold novel, the discerning first-person narrator, Scott Talmedge, links observed nature to human passion: "I wanted to see the rail [Yellow Rail, a rare marsh bird] because birds are in me. They are in my blood, like a language. They were what I first knew how to love" (241). Scott's remarks provide the novel's title as well as a clue to the novel's basic thematic structure: what happens to birdsÑin Massachusetts, Minnesota, Arizona, Old Mexico, TexasÑmodifies what happens to the novel's main characters. For example, Scott remembers spotting an Ivory Gull off the coast of Maine; then he recalls meeting Demer, his first wife. She was and is a unique species, but she can also blend in with other people just as the Ivory Gull can with other gulls. She abandons Scott to fly to Guatemala where she rescues victimized peasants and helps them 'migrate' to the United States.

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

GSAS Centennial Medal Awarded to Three Alumni
By Ken Gewertz Gazette Staff An ethicist, a historian of science, and a chemist received Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Centennial Medals at a ceremony on Wednesday, June 3, at the Faculty Club. The 1998 Centennial Medalists are Sissela Bok , PhD '70, I. Bernard Cohen , PhD '47, and Richard Zare , PhD '64. The Centennial Medal was first awarded in 1989 at the 100th anniversary of the School. The medal honors alumni for contributions to society that have emerged from their graduate education at Harvard. Bok, daughter of Alva Myrdal, winner of the 1982 Nobel Peace Prize, and Gunnar Myrdal, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Economics, and wife of Harvard President Emeritus Derek Bok, received her Ph.D. in philosophy in 1970. Bok was a lecturer at Simmons College from 1971 to 1972 and at the Harvard-M.I.T. Division of Health Sciences and Technology from 1975 to 1982. From 1982 to 1984, she lectured at Harvard. In 1985, she joined the faculty of Brandeis University, where she remained until becoming Distinguished Fellow in the Department of Population and International Health at the Center for Population and Development Studies at Harvard.

Arne Thorens weekly news bulletin has been a feature in Nordstjernan since his retirement as Ambassador in 1993 - here are a few excerpts from his life as a news anchor man and diplomat in America. Memories of more than 40 years - Part II She came in a long mink fur coat which covered the black Dior dress. The light, a bit ruffled hair was kept in a bit of order by a white scarf with brown flowers. She appeared with a smile that according to one of the American reporters "could easily melt the heart of even the toughest tax collector". She stood in the biting morning wind. The temperature was somewhere deep down on very un-New Yorkish levels. But she smiled and waved towards all the cameras. It was just a few months less than eight years since she had left from exactly the same place to fly to Rome and then on to Stromboli and Roberto Rosselini. Maybe during the flight over the Atlantic this time she had considered the reception she would get. She must have felt very warm when they greeted her as they did in spite of the really cruel January wind. Ingrid Bergman was "home" again. American customs officers can be among the most bureaucratic on this earth, but Ingrid Bergman was let through without any problems at all. She tried to control her hair, but did not have much of a chance against the very energetic wind, and the very next moment she stood all alone in front of much more than a hundred reporters.

Previous Contents Next Part 12. Democrats and Social Engineers Universal franchise (for men) was the most important political demand of the Social Democrats and other leftist parties. Without a widening of the voter base to include low-income groups they would never achieve political power. At the turn of the century it became clear that the shift of population from rural to urban areas would make the peculiar and 100-year old organisation of the army untenable(see Part 5 It would have to be replaced by a system where all physically fit men would be trained as soldiers. This put a new perspective on the right to vote. Was it reasonable that men were obliged to die for their country but not having any voice in the political process? The slogan One man - one gun - one vote appealed to many in the political centre. After much wrangling a voting reform act was approved in 1909. It was a compromise that did not provide for universal franchise, because there were still barriers in terms of minimum income. But in practice all men with a regular income would be able to vote. True universal franchise, including the right for women to vote was not achieved until 1921.
