III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Myrdal, Gunnar (1898-1987), economista y político sueco, premio Nobel de Economía en 1974. Nació el 6 de diciembre de 1898 en Gustafs y estudió economía en la Universidad de Estocolmo. Durante la década de 1930, siendo profesor en este centro, publicó una serie de obras sobre teoría económica clásica y, en colaboración con su esposa Alva Myrdal, escritos sobre la decreciente tasa de natalidad sueca. En 1938 fue contratado por la Carnegie Corporation para analizar las condiciones de vida de las personas negras en Estados Unidos. En 1945 pasó a formar parte del gobierno sueco en calidad de ministro de Comercio e Industria (1945-1947). Entre 1947 y 1957 fue secretario de la Comisión Económica para Europa (una de las cinco comisiones regionales del Consejo Económico y Social de Naciones Unidas). Sus diez años de estudio sobre las condiciones sociales y económicas imperantes en el sur de Asia dieron lugar al voluminoso trabajo El drama asiático. Publications Newsletter No 31: Conference Announcements Conference "Body Concepts" (16th and 17th of March 2001 at the University of Basel, Switzerland) The aim of the Swiss Society for Research on Women and Gender is to present new results of important achievements on gender relations at home and abroad. For this purpose, they will organize an interdisciplinary and international conference on the topic: "Body Concepts" which will be held on March 16 -17 2001, at the University of Basel. At this conference the central paradigm, "body", will be examined through different angles of disciplines. Perception of the body, as well as esthetical figurations and scientific concepts about the body and its parts will be the topic of discussion. There will also be a focus on symbolic, indirect dimensional meanings of corporeality (corporate body, organs, organisms). The most important part of the conference will be to fathom out and communicate the specific possibilities of knowledge, which lie in the permanent interdisciplinary discussion (ex: the culture of humanities and natural sciences). This program embraces three major speakers: Prof. Dr. Britta Schinzel, medicine; Prof. Dr. Christina Von Braun, cultural science; Prof. Dr. Gabriele Brandstetter, theater science. In the four workshops there will be a short performance and discussion of a theme from the mentioned spectrum. The conference languages are German, French, and English
