Alva Myrdal was born in Uppsala in 1902, graduated from University in 1924, and married Gunnar Myrdal the same year. Together with her husband she made a major contribution in the 1930s to the work of promoting social welfare. They were joint authors of a book entitled "The population problem in crisis", and she was also actively engaged in the discussion on housing and school problems. She was a prominent member of the Social Democrat Party in Sweden, and in 1943 was appointed to that party's committee with the task of drafting a post-war programme. Also in that year she was appointed to the Government Commission on International Post-War Aid and Reconstruction.
After the second world war she devoted more and more of her time and energy to international questions. In 1949 - 1950 she headed UNO's section dealing with welfare policy, and in 1950 - 1955 she was chairman of UNESCO's social science section. In 1955 she was appointed Swedish ambassador to India, and in 1962 was nominated Sweden's representative to the Geneva disarmament conference. In that year she became a member of Parliament and in 1967 a member of the Cabinet, entrusted with the special task of promoting disarmament. For a number of years she has represented her country in UNO's political committee, in which questions of disarmament have been dealt with.

She was the corecipient with of Mexico of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1982. Alva Reimer married the Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal in 1924. After a career as a teacher, she served as principal director of the United Nations Department of Social Welfare during 1949-50 and became director of the UNESCO Department of Social Sciences in 1951. From 1955 to 1961 she served as ambassador of the Swedish government to India, with related duties in neighbouring Burma (Myanmar) and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In 1961 Myrdal was named special disarmament adviser to the Swedish foreign minister. A year later she was elected to Parliament as a Social Democrat and was named head of the Swedish delegation to the Geneva Disarmament Conference. In 1966 she became minister with portfolio covering disarmament and church affairs, holding that post and the one in Geneva until 1973. Subsequently, she wrote and spoke frequently on behalf of disarmament; her publications include The Game of Disarmament: How the United States and Russia Run the Arms Race (1976). In addition to the Nobel Prize, Myrdal received the West German Peace Prize (1970; jointly with her husband), the Albert Einstein Peace Prize (1980), and the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding (1981).

Gunnar Myrdal The Granger Collection, New York City in full KARL GUNNAR MYRDAL (b. Dec. 6, 1898, Gustafs, Dalarna, Swedend. May 17, 1987, Stockholm), Swedish economist and sociologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1974 (the cowinner was Friedrich A. Hayek ). He was regarded as a major theorist of international relations and in particular of third world development policies. Myrdal was educated at Stockholm University, receiving a law degree in 1923 and a doctorate in economics in 1927. (He had married Alva Reimer Myrdal in 1924.) He received a Rockefeller traveling fellowship in the United States (1929-30), after which he accepted an associate professorship at the Institute of International Studies in Geneva (1930-31). He was professor of political economy (1933-50) and of international economy (1960-67) at Stockholm University; in 1967 he became professor emeritus. Until the early 1930s Myrdal emphasized pure theory, in sharp contrast to his later concern with applied economics and social problems. In his doctoral dissertation he had examined the role of expectations in price formation, an approach stemming from the work of Frank H. Knight. The theoretical approach was carried over by Myrdal into macroeconomics when, as a member of the Stockholm school of economics, he delivered, in 1931, the lectures resulting in Monetary Equilibrium (1939), which contained the important distinction between

THE NOBEL FOUNDATION
Nobel Lecture
Disarmament, Technology, And The Growth In Violence

by Alva Myrdal
1982 Nobel Peace Prize December 11, 1982 at Oslo City Hall, Oslo, Norway Mr. Chairman, Honoured Guests: In the first place it is my obvious and at the same time most pleasant duty to express my gratitude for the honour that has been accorded me by the award of the 1982 Nobel Peace Prize. May I then mention that I shall deal not only with the general subject of disarmament , but I shall also direct the attention to the connection between armament problems and the headlong on-rush of technology and the growth in violence . We must never forget the trampling down of human dignity and rights, the increase in acts of violence and the use of torture. All of this testifies to an incredible persistence in contempt for the suffering of individual men and women. But I would also like to express my very special thanks to the Nobel Committee for hitting on the idea of dividing the prize between Dr. Garcia Robles and myself. This indicates that we have not received the prize only as personal tributes to ourselves, but that the entire movement which aims at promoting peace and reducing the use of violence has been given a great encouragement. This was emphasised, too, by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Egil Aarvik. The whole popular movement of protest, which at present is and has to be directed mainly against the use of the extreme weapon of terror, the atom bomb, has acquired a recognised legitimacy. This is bound to influence the attitudes and decisions not least of leading politicians and military chiefs in the superpowers.

"Alva Myrdal's Questions to Our Time"
March 6-8, 2002 - Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden
The conference "Alva Myrdal's Questions to Our Time", which took place at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, March 6-8, 2002 provided a lively forum, where many challenging issues of concern to Alva Myrdal, our present time and the future were addressed.
Background
Alva Myrdal, educator, civil servant and politician, was e.g. an expert in early childhood education, a prominent advocate in the struggle for equal rights for women and at one time the highest ranking woman in the UN Secretariat. She was also member of the Swedish Parliament, Minister for disarmament and member of the Swedish cabinet for a period of twelve years. After having published a most important study of the nuclear arms race, The Game of Disarmament, and in many respects served as "the conscience of the disarmament movement" she obtained the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982. She stands out as one of the main contributors to the development of progressive thought in the 20th Century, not only in Sweden but also internationally. Alva Myrdal, born in Uppsala in 1902, combined family life and a professional career with a life-long commitment to politics and social science. With exceptional energy and clarity of mind she approached some of the most burning questions of society.
