The 1946 winners have impressive credentials (note that Gandhiji never held any prominent public office) and the 1947 winners seem to have been chosen based on their length of existance (don't know much about these organizations). I would guess that India's independance in 1947 would have made him a forerunner for the prize in 1949 or later (it takes a couple of years of lobbying just to get nominated). His assasination in 1948 effectively disqualified him since the Nobel prizes are not awarded posthumously. Plus the Nobel committee itself says that "Until 1960, the Peace Prize was almost without exception awarded to persons or organizations in North America and Western Europe" and "In the inter-war years, several awards were made to serving politicians who sought to promote detente in Europe." It was a remarkable document, outlining goals for reducing global poverty, improving education for boys and girls in poor countries, and relieving the scourge of AIDS. "We must put people at the centre of everything we do," Annan said. "No calling is more noble, and no responsibility greater, than that of enabling men, women and children, in cities and villages around the world, to make their lives better." Barbara Crossette wrote in The New York Times He was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on April 8, 1938, a member of an upper-class merchant family that had descended from tribal chiefs. While boarding at a high school in Ghana, he once conducted a successful hunger strike to protest against the poor quality of food. He went on to the University of Science and Technology at Kumasi, then Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., Institut des Haute Étude Internationale in Geneva, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a master's degree in management. Annan is the first secretary general to have worked his way to the top job through the ranks, being a 30-year UN veteran. He performed brilliantly in the early 1990s, negotiating the release of Western hostages from Iraq after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. In 1994, Annan directed the withdrawal of UN forces from Somalia. In the mid-1990s, he served as the special representative for the UN peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia.

Aubert, Suzanne Founder of the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, born St-Symphorien, Lyon, France 19 June 1835, died Wellington, New Zealand 1 October 1926. Determined to be a nursing nun, she trained in Paris, nursed during the Crimean War, and joined Bishop Pompallier in New Zealand in 1860. She worked with Maori girls in Auckland and in 1871 moved to Napier where she nursed, developed herbal remedies, catechized, and edited a Maori Prayer Book (1879). From 1883 she developed a remote congregation at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River where she broke in a farm, ran a dispensary, gathered babies and children, published A Manual of Maori Conversation (1885) and founded The Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion (1892). Moving to Wellington in 1899 she set up the Home of Compassion and went to Rome (1913-1920) to gain papal recognition for her Order and its mission. Some unknown and unsung heroes By Bert Feldman The River Reporter Thursday, January 1, 1998 Sullivan County has had its share of great people in all walks of life. Many of these people are scarcely known to most local residents today. They came from all walks of life soldiers, scientists, writers, and other professions. Who was Gonsalus? The oldest known non-Indian grave in the county is located at the entrance to the Wurtsboro airport. Badly neglected, you can still read the brief inscription on the reddish stone: “Manuel Gonsalus is Gestorvan DE 18 April Anno 1752.” Who lies in this solitary grave, buried 25 years and a day before the start of the American Revolution? James Quinlan, writer of “The History of Sullivan County” in 1872, says that Gonsalus was “a Spanish Don.” Come now, Mr. Q! By 1492, the Spanish Inquisition, the Holocaust of its day, had either killed, burned at the stake, or driven out the Islamic Moors, Jews, and other “heretics” from the unhappy country and from neighboring Portugal. Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation did not start for another 25 years, and no Protestant was ever allowed into Spain; none was certainly given the title of “Don!” The Jews, expelled in 1492, fled to more hospitable lands, especially Holland. They came to Nieuw Amsterdam in 1654 and built a synagogue near Wall St., the second oldest religious body in that Dutch Colony. (The Dutch Reformed Church was the first.)
