Mother Teresa to be beatified in 2003
With Pope John Paul endorsing a miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate may be beatified some time in 2003. There is, however, one more step before she can be elevated from 'blessed' to saint, which is authentication of a second miracle. Born Agnes Gonzha Bojazhiu in Macedonia on August 27, 1910, Mother Teresa had dedicated her life to work in the slums of Calcutta. Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, died earlier this afternoon (Friday 1:30 EDT) in her convent in India. She was 87. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in 1928. She took the name "Teresa" after St. Teresa of Avila, patroness of the Missionaries. In 1948, she came across a half-dead woman lying in front of a Calcutta hospital. She stayed with the woman until she died. From that point on, she dedicated the majority of her life to helping the poorest of the poor in India, thus gaining her the name "Saint of the Gutters." She founded an order of nuns called the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India dedicated to serving the poor. Almost 50 years later, the Missionaries of Charity have grown from 12 sisters in India to over 3,000 in 517 missions throughout 100 countries worldwide. In 1952, she founded the Nirmal Hriday Home for the Dying in a former temple in Calcutta. It was there that they would care for the dying Indians that were found on the streets. Mother would see Jesus in everyone that she met. It didn't matter whether they were dying of AIDS or Leprosy. She wanted them to be able to die in peace and with dignity. For over 50 years, she worked selfishly helping the poor. That devotion towards the poor won her respect throughout the world and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Saturday, September 6, 1997 Calcutta, India-Mother Teresa, the frail Nobel Peace Prize-winning nun who ministered to the poor, sick and dying and came to embody charity and goodness for countless millions, died Friday at her convent here. She was 87 and had been in frail health for years. Bowed almost double by age and afflictions, her labors reflected in the wrinkles on her beatific face, Mother Teresa died when her heart simply stopped. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. A close friend, Naresh Kumar, said "the Mother" as she was known to millions said only, "I can't breathe," then died. Pope John Paul was told immediately of her death and announced a celebratory Mass for today at Castel Gandolfo, his summer residence outside Rome. President Clinton remembered her as an incredible person, and the House of Representatives observed a moment of silence in her honor. Three months ago, she had visited Washington to accept the Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor the United States offers. Although her death was announced at a relatively late hour, thousands poured out of their dwellings to stand outside the convent she founded. Hundreds wept.

'Sainted' leader's sojourn 'opens doors to our hearts'
By Maureen Boyle, Susan Pawlak-Seaman and Carol Lee Costa-Crowell, Standard-Times staff writers
NEW BEDFORD Mother Teresa, the tiny nun considered by many to be a living saint, stepped off a Falcon jet today into the welcoming arms of eight beaming nuns as thousands of city residents waited in the rain for her to arrive.
"Welcome Mother," one of the nuns called as the 84-year-old Nobel laureate walked into the group of clergy and city officials gathered at a hangar at New Bedford Municipal Airport at 11:25 a.m.
Mother Teresa, founder of the Missionaries of Charity order, greeted the nuns and then was presented a key to the city by Mayor Rosemary S. Tierney.
"Now I can open the door," Mother Tersea joked, clutching the gold-colored key. More...

A Beacon of Hope In a Sea of Despair
By Wafi Abdulla "I choose the poverty of our poor people. But I am grateful to receive [the Nobel] in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, of the crippled, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."
Mother Teresa, accepting the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize Vision, extraordinary compassion, complete dedication - these are but few of the characteristics Mother Teresa embodied as founder and former leader of the Missionaries of Charity. Of course, these alone do not make an influential world leader. Winston Churchill may have lead the winning side in World War II, Nelson Mandela may have lead the struggle to end apartheid, Mahatma Gandhi may have lead the Indian Subcontinent to independence, and Martin Luther King may have lead the fight against segregation in 50s and 60s in America - but what did Mother Teresa do that makes her so unique, so influential? Mother Teresa’s story, of a woman beginning by founding a Catholic order in Calcutta devoted to marginalized individuals, and ending with a live global broadcast of the coming together of international leaders in a celebration of her life, is grounded in humility, honesty, and generosity - attributes present only among the greatest of leaders.

Mother Teresa
Albanian missionary Mother Teresa has dedicated her life to helping the poor, the sick, and the dying around the world, particularly those in India. Introduction Mother Teresa is among the most well-known and highly respected women in the world in the latter half of the twentieth century. In 1948 she founded a religious order of nuns in Calcutta, India, called the Missionaries of Charity. Through this order, she has dedicated her life to helping the poor, the sick, and the dying around the world, particularly those in India. Her selfless work with the needy has brought her much acclaim and many awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia (what is now Macedonia). Her parents, Nikola and Dronda Bojaxhiu, were Albanians who settled in Skopje shortly after the beginning of the century. Since her father was co-owner of a construction firm, her family lived comfortably while she was growing up. In 1928 she suddenly decided to become a nun and traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to join the Sisters of Loreto, a religious order founded in the seventeenth century. After studying at the convent for less than a year, she left to join the Loreto convent in the city of Darjeeling in northeast India. On May 24, 1931, she took the name of "Teresa" in honor of St. Teresa of Lisieux.

Mother Teresa - the Saint of the Gutters
"The other day I dreamed that I was at the gates of heaven. And St. Peter said, 'Go back to Earth. There are no slums up here." - Quoted as telling Prince Michael of Greece in 1996. These words, once spoken by Mother Teresa, vividly recall the life of the late Roman Catholic nun and missionary known as "the Saint of the Gutters." For Mother Teresa, who devoted her life to the succor of the sick and the outcast, earthly sufferers were nothing less than Christ in "distressing disguise." From an early age, the girl who would become Mother Teresa felt the call to help others. Born August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was the daughter of Albanian parents - a grocer and his wife. As a public school student she developed a special interest in overseas missions and, by age 12, realized her vocation was aiding the poor. She was inspired to work in India by reports sent home from Jesuit missionaries in Bengal. And at 18, she left home to join a community of Irish nuns with a mission in Calcutta. Here, she took the name "Sister Teresa,"

Albania: Vatican Considering Beatification For Mother Teresa
By Don Hill The Roman Catholic Church has placed Mother Teresa, the nun who won the Nobel Prize and world fame for her work with the poor in India, on the path to recognition as a saint. To her followers, the outcome is certain. They say that for them, Mother Teresa is already a saint. RFE/RL correspondent Don Hill reports that, in Albania, excitement is mounting at the prospect that Mother Teresa will become the first Vatican-recognized Albanian saint. Prague, 21 August 2001 (RFE/RL) Only three in 10 Albanians are Christian, and only one in three of these is Roman Catholic. But excitement is growing among many Albanians as the Vatican places one of their own, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu better known as Mother Teresa, on the path to recognition as a saint. Archbishop Henry Sebastian D'Souza of Calcutta, India, and a diocesan commission have labored since 1999 two years after Mother Teresa's death at age 87 to gather documentation on what the Roman Catholic Church calls the "life, virtues, and reputation of sanctity" of the respected nun. This month, the commission dispatched 35,000 pages in 76 volumes to the Vatican as evidence to support her beatification, a step toward sainthood. Mother Teresa spent most of her life ministering to the poor and helpless of India. Born to Albanian parents in Skopje, she has become an idol for Albanians of all faiths.
